  • Delhi - Jalori Pass - Shoja - Delhi 4 days Bike Tip

    Prologue:
It’s been quite some time now that I have joined xBHP. In this period I had developed a couple of very good friendships. Now I have always had a desire for a group long ride and that to preferably to hills. But because of one reason or other I was not able to fulfil this desire.

But this time all the stars had aligned. After riding in town with me for more than 1 year now my wife had become comfortable on the bike, the finance part was also there and of course this time I had perfect company also. Hence we decided for the ride to the mountains.

It was a 4 day ride. The itinerary:
    1st day: Delhi – Chindi (450 Km)
    2nd day: Chindi – Shoja (100 Km)
    3rd day: Shoja – Naldera (110 KM)
    4th day: Naldera - Delhi (420 Km)

    The Participants:
    1) Rachit and his wife(Karizma)
    2) Raktim and his GF(FZ16)
    3) Rakesh and his GF(FZ16)
    4) Shivanshu (R15)
    5) MJ (R15)

After almost one month of planning, meeting and preparations the day had come 9th April. I will admit that India winning the world cup also helped us pass this one month as to pass time before the ride was very difficult because of anxiety.

Anyways me and Pooja started from Gurgaon at 3.15 in the morning. We met the rest of the group near IIT at around 3.45. From there we went to Sarai Kale Khan bus stand. There we waited for Rakesh who because of some misunderstanding got slightly late. In the end finally I guess we pushed of around 4.45. It was cool, weather seemed perfect and as agreed we all rode together under strict speed limits. Till murthal I guess it was clean eventless ride as we all expected because of the plain highway and our eyes so desperate for the twisties. At murthal we had our first break. Everybody was full of energy and spirits were really high.

    First Pit Stop around Murthal:

Once we started from here, we slightly increased the pace because things were looking comfortable and we still had a long way to go. The next stop was Jhilmil Dhaba at Karnal.

After quite a heavy breakfast we started towards Zirakpur. We didn’t go to Chandigarh. We straightway turned towards Shimla from Zirakpur. We encountered heavy traffic Jam in Kalka as it was the Navratras and there is a famous temple in Kalka. It was the first test of the bikes or I would say torture specially to the clutch as it is uphill and stop go traffic. By the time we got out of that mess, the bikes were running real hot. Our plan was to have tea at me friends place in Parwanoo. We reached parwanoo and took a decently lengthy break as everybody was relaxed that boring highway was done and next was the twisties.

From there started the real journey. Everybody started really joining. Riders were enjoying Riding and pillions enjoyed Vistas.

    Somewhere on the way:

Then we reached Solan. There we again took a break. We took a lot of frequent breaks it was the first such long ride for the ladies. From Solan onwards we started to look for a place to have lunch.
Finally managed a small Dhaba type place and stopped there. The food was amazing. Some photos of the place:

After Solan, the road widens, the tarmac was smooth and the turns were flowing one after another. By this time ladies were also comfortable being pillion on the hills. That gave us a chance to increase our pace slightly and enjoy the leans. I was having big trouble just to keep up with all other Yamahas because of their wonderful handling and nice sticky tyres. Even my power advantage was not helping me much. From there on it was continuous workout for me to keep up.

Rakesh also has a video of this stretch. I will request him to upload.

Then we reached Shimla, tanked up and moved ahead. From Shimla to Naldera the roads are smooth and the turns are sharper but the tone was set and se reached Naldera in no time. There we took a break at a hotel where it would be our third night stay.

    Some photos from the hotel:

This was the First Day’s log. I apologise for less clicks as this day we were riding most of the time.
I promise better clicks for the next day’s logs.

The other participants will also be contributing

                Very nice......

I'm sure riding with the better half must be out of this world experience. When two love combines, it creates such a moment which is not easy to forget for the rest of the life.

@All, So you encountered Ice... Lovely..... bring in more pics and log from each rider.

Also, it would be good to hear what ladies have to say about touring on Bikes

                      @prateek: Thanks Bhai.
@mav1234: Yes, brother having ladies as pillions was slightly difficult considering it was there first such long ride on two wheels. But they showed great courage and it kept us in check also.
@Sheery paji: Very nicely said Sir. It was always my wish to make her a part of my passion and she gave her full support. Her presence made the trip all the more special. Also this time I had great group of people also with me.
@Cult: Man I missed you. Yes brother this was one of those trips that we used to dream in our college mess. Buy a bike soon and come to delhi.

@Sunny: Yes Sir it was crazy.

I will be posting the next days log tonight. Cant wait to get to home and post more but right now office duty. But I promise I have some great visuals for you all in the store.

Sorry guys for making you wait so long.

@Abhishek Bhai: Thank you bhai. Yup the effort and courage shown by the pillions was nothing less than spectacular.

Ok guys here is the Second Day log:

The next when we woke up, it was cloudy outside hence we anticipated that we are going to have rain today. We took our own sweet time to get ready and then had our breakfast lubed our chains and finally covered ourselves with Rain Coats.

Some pics of the hotel and surroundings:

                              Apple Orchids:

Finally around 10.30 we started for the day. The destination was Shoja via Jalori Pass and distance to be covered was around 100 Km. Intially the pace was slow as the roads were not in the best of conditions.

                              Some pics on the way:

And then suddenly we saw a waterfall. Everybody got so happy and energised in anticipation of things which we might see ahead.

Then we moved ahead. We encountered mild rain throughout the day. That made the road slippery and my Job on my tyres a lot more difficult as on wet it was harder to keep up with Yamahas with me. A special appreciation for the Yamaha bikes for their wonderful handling and nice sticky tyres.

Finally we saw the Sultej River. And naughty that we are we took our bikes to river bed. The way was full of atleast a feet of sand and t was fun.

From there we moved towards Jalori Pass. Our pace was slow and we took regular breaks. Finally around 10 Kms before Jalori the ascend starts. My my riding side was the cliff and the drop from the cliff must be atleast half a Km. That scared the hell out of me, so much so that from there I literally rode in the middle of the road. Exactly 6 Km before Jalori, the real incline begins. The road becomes completely bad and the incline was such that even 2nd Gear on bikes was not enough hence most of it we used the 1st gear. Finally after reaching Jalori everybody went quite for sometime because of the view.

We were also happy to know that our destination was only 5 Km from Jalori. Although these 5 Km was a complete decline of similar angle and full of slush at least in the earlier part where there was snow around.

We rode very slowly and even this downhill was taken in 1st and 2nd gears.

                              Victims of Hills:

Finally we reached our destination. We took our rooms and relaxed for sometime and then came out to enjoy the view, the clean air and ofcourse the chill. In the night we had Bon Fire and topic of discussion was GHOSTS. Ahh! It was so much fun. The hosts at the Guest House were hospitable and they took care of all our Nakhra. And then Good Night. It was a well earned night's sleep I would say.

Thank you guys for reading. I have more in store for you all in the form of next days log which I will upload tomorrow.
