  • The ride to the Truth...

There were roads full of slush, rains increasing the difficulty level after every turn. The roads taking you to the remotest place where there is no one to help you out in case the road converts into a stream of river and pplaces where one has to push other’s bike for him to climb the ascend…

Yeah, we were on one such ride. The ride to the Sach, The truth…

    More to follow soon...

We started our day pretty early so that we could reach Manali on time and scale Rohtang lazily. At 7 in the morning, we halted at a dhaba in Bilaspur to have breakfast and then moved on after spending an hour there. It was a smooth ride all the way through with sun playing around with those water filled clouds. We reached Manali at around 12:30, and stopped after crossing it. Till now, we rode without any problem or glitches but little did we know what was in store for us. As we finished our lunch and sat on our beloved bikes, I felt a drop of water on my face and it did not took long for others to follow.

After an hour, i was standing at Marhi, all wet and the rain had not stopped yet. I waited for my ride partner to come, so that we can move forward.

After another hour, I was standing just a couple of KMs far from Marhi, getting drenched and waiting for the jam to clear up so that I can ride on. After some time, I saw a small clearance between two trucks; I rode through it and was able to get ahead on the road.

After around five mins of deliberation, we were able to get it out and move forward. Was it raining? YES

Another hour went by. I am around 5 more KMS from the top and questioning the stranded truck drivers about a red bullet. With no one to reply, I moved forward. There was a truck in front of me and going in the direction as i. I followed suit, taking advantage of the tire marks to negotiate with the slush which has gone up to at least a feet now.

Finally, we reach the Rohtang top at 5 p.m and the rain had subsided by then. We stop at a tent and order tea along with a bottle of water. It was then, that we realized how wet and cold we were. Soon we started to descend towards Kokhsar from where we plan to go towards Batal and then to chandertaal. The roads on the other side of the pass were only a tad bit better than this side.

It has been an interesting day but tiring nonetheless and we had to cover much more. With this thought in my mind, I go off to sleep.

                    ...and the Jam

                    ...and the roads

These were the good stretch of roads, where we could think of stopping to click pics and rest...

                        The Ride to the Truth...

                        Day 2: Sissu – Tandi – Udaipur – Cherry – Killar

Yet again, we started early for the day and the reason was remotely related to anything else but concern. The concern of crossing two nullahs out of which one had the reputation of being paagal and it is a well-known fact that with the passage of the day, the pressure on such nullahs increase hence making it impossible for bikers/Cars or sometimes Dozers to cross it.

So after bidding good bye to Amir Chand, the care taker, we moved on towards Tandi. It was a pleasant day with good roads and clear sky and we reached Tandi in no time. A tank full of petrol, a sumptuous breakfast and we again started riding.

                        At Sissu:

Ahead of tandi, the beauty of Lahaul valley opens up and you get indulged in admiring it. Such is the effect that you can sometimes forget about the other rider’s existence. Anyhow, we reached Thirot which is good 16 KMs befor Udaipur and the roads have been pretty good till now.

                        Tandi Petrol Pump:

                        Tandi Bridge:

                        The Lahaul:

                        Thirot:

After thirot, the road detoriates considerably and speed reduces too so around half an hour later, we reached Udaipur and a gentleman over there told us about the Nullah, the Pagal Nullah. Excited and scared we moved forward, looking for a stream of water flowing relentlessly on the road. Soon we found one such entity and were left aghasted, looking at the very size of it.

                        The Roads:

                        The Paagal Nullah:

Next five mins were invested in making the strategy on how to cross the Nullah and it was decided that we will go one by one, with one guy riding and the other guy pushing the motorcycle from behind. First was my turn and I rode to the edge of the Nullah. One deep breath and I accelerated on. The first drop of water sent shivers down my body, for it was so cold and the pressure of the stream was constantly trying to push me to the left. I tried going deep in the nullah and the rear kept on drifting to the left. Archit tried hard to keep it in a single line while i accelerated forward. If you think it was dangerous enough, then there were huge boulders beneath water which made sure I could not get a steady ground to ride on.

Archit and I trying to cross the paagal Nullah which comes 5 KMs after Udaipur, Himachal Pradesh

The Paagal Nullah: From the other side

Stage 1 passed… we took Mr.Dragon on the other side of the Nullah but the red bull is still waiting to be crossed. Another deep breath and we cross the whole nullah on foot only to reach back. The same routine followed again and both the bikes were standing on the other side of the Nullah. Mission accomplished and we can move forward.

We met a guy before crossing the Nullah who was generous enough to click for us and he told us that there was one more Nullah ahead. Time for one more deep breath and we moved forward.

We were moving with a steady pace when I saw a pickup coming from opposite direction. We enquired about the nullah ahead and his statement increased the curiosity and fear. What he said was ‘Ho jaana chahie bike par, nahin to Dozer khada hai who paar kara dega’ (You should be able to cross it, else there is a dozer and it will help you crossing it). Some more time on the road and we reached the nullah… we were a bit satisfied that the pressure is comparatively less but then the sheer length of it made us prepare for a one-person-riding-and-other-pushing style again.

5 mins later, both the bikes were on the other side and we were a bit happy about crossing both the hurdles. The events till now could have broken the grit of many but to us, it was more of ‘preparing the mind for what was about to come’.

The roads continued to be worse as ever however after so many KMs, we were pretty comfortable riding on them. At three o’clock we reached cherry, a place highly recommended by a friend and so we checked in to the PWD rest house cherry.

On the way to Pangi valley:
                        The Roads:

                        Spot the rider:

                        Welcome to Pangi:

                        Resting:

Two hours passed and we had already had our lunch, cleaned ourselves and kept our clothes on drier. What I mean is that there was nothing more to do. Sitting ideal, we thought of leaving cherry and moving on to Killad. So we checked out from Rest house and moved on to Killad. The distance from Cherry to Killad is only 14 KMs and so, after around half an hour, we were standing at the gates of PWD Rest house again. Only this time, it was Killad and not cherry. Didn’t had any problem in getting a room here and the place also had phone connectivity, which made us appreciate our decision.

Clouds covered the sky by the time we reached Killad and somehow, it gave a magical feel to the whole place. Yes we loved it but also had a fear of rains pouring in the next day.

It has been yet another fun filled day and the PWD rest house made sure that we had a nice sleep. Tomorrow is going to be the Face-Off day. The day that will be embarked in our tourer minds for eternity.
