    The ride to the Truth...

It was a feeling I could not imagine; we were at Sach Pass. The one rated as toughest among all by the esteemed tourers of our times. I put the bike on side stand and place my foot on the ground. But then, did I actually placed it on the ground, was the question in my frozen mind. I looked at the ground and yes, my foot was placed firmly on it. It went complete numb because of the ice cold water in the nullah and the wind chill after that. I quickly got off the bike and started walking or sometimes jogging. I desperately wanted my feet back. Archit came in after 5 mins and by then, I managed to get some sensation in my legs. After a few more pics, we moved forward.

We desperately wanted a cup of tea and a place to get ourselves warm. We reached Satrundi, which is around 20 KMs from the pass, to Chamba side and saw a tented Dhaba. There is a police check post at satrundi too and we were required to register our identity over there. After all the formalities, we went inside the dhaba, took off our shoes and socks and ordered for tea. The dhaba owner had some blankets and above all, a chullah. So my next half an hour was spent with blanket over me and the Chullah in front.

Before departing from Satrundi, we enquired about road conditions and were informed about a few more water crossings.

    A nullah enroute:

    Some pics enroute:

We reached Kalaban and then Bairagad in no time and then started towards Koti. At Koti, we got our tanks filled. Yes, the question was: Why Koti?
Our wandering mind was not satisfied with the ride we had till now and was desperately wanting for more and so we decided to move on to Bhaderwah from there. Enquiries were made about any possible route and road conditions. We did get to know about two such routes but then, the answers regarding road conditions and distance were not satisfactory and hence, we had to return to Chamba, disheartened. At chamba, we decided to go on till Khajjiar and then decide again about the rest of the day.

    Enroute Khajjiar:

Once the tent was up, we sat there, waited for everyone to go and then, went on a stroll. Later, we had our dinner at a restaurant nearby and went off to sleep in the tent.

Thanks again Krish.. and yeah, it was a great feeling to be at such a place. Especially when sun went out and the place was dark, with some hint of moonlight and innumerous stars above...

2 hours later, breakfast done, tent packed, clothes dried we went to taxi drivers in a hope to find the before mentioned route if any. Two gentlemen confirmed that there is one such route from Khadamukh. So we sat on our steeds and rode to Chamba and then took a turn towards Bharmaur.

The roads were pretty smooth for initial few KMs but later on, we were yet again in those bad patches with mud, rocks and Slush all around. By now, I had notices a problem with my ride. The front discs were gone and the rear disc are not enough on their own. I thought of avoiding the use of the front brakes and slowed down while Archit cruised on without the knowledge of the issue. We later met at Bharmaur where I informed him about this.

Till the time I reached Bharmaur, he had already enquired about the route to Barot and was not looking happy. When I asked, he informed me that there is a road from Khada Mukh but only till Holi and after that, it is a trekking route which we will not be able to cover.

So we started going back to Chamba on those deformed roads. Optimists as we are, we stopped at Khada mukh and inquired about a faint possibility that the road exists and were again left disappointed.

After that, it was a drive all the way back to Chamba from where we took a turn towards Khajjiar/Jot and kept on moving on those roads.
While riding, my mind moved on to the name where we were going: Jot. A pass in Ladakhi means La and in himachali it means Jot.

The roads were kind to us after chamba and we lazily cruised towards Chowari. Five KMs after chowari, we reached Lahru from where the road diverts to Kangra via Shapura. This is also the place from where the road widening starts and hence the roads go back to the deformed shape with mud and rocks around.

We reached Shahpura at around 7 at night and Gaggal at around 7:45. Took a room in a hotel near the highway and called the day off. All through the day, I was riding with no front brakes and negligible rear brakes and an overheating engine. Something inside me knew that the bike has taken the toll of the ride and needs some care. Unable to decide the future course, we slept off.

It was real brave of you to ride that ways without brakes. I mainly rely on front brakes & without them I'm half dead.

So Bravo!! Not ot mention interesting read.

                    Ride to the Truth...

Day 5: The End of ride

Traveling I only stop at exits
                    Wondering if I'll stay
                    Young and restless
Living this way I stress less
I want to pull away when the dream dies

Archit and I had a brief talk about the course of ride today. He wanted to visit Barot while I on the other hand was apprehensive about doing it as I was not confident with my bike at that time. The front disc pads worn out and the rear were not behaving too good either. The engine was getting heat up very much and the ride was very uncomfortable. We were still a good 250 KMs away from Chandigarh and I knew going via Barot would mean aprox 400 KMs. Hence, we decided to go separate ways. While Archit decided to go to Barot and then to Chandigarh, I decided to head back directly.

It was time for some Jugaad power. We had a fevikwick with us as an adhesive, so we took it and placed its cap on the hole. This did stop the fuel leak but somehow we were not convinced. Later, I realized that the tubeless puncture strip too has adhesive qualities and we can use it too. Wallah

5 mins after that, Archit left for Barot and I started my journey back to Chandigarh. It was an uneventfull and simple ride with nothing much to be excited about apart from the worry of constantly blinking engine-overheat sensor. I halted a few kms before Hoshiarpur and left the bike in the shade. 10 mins of rest and the sensor went off. The same thing happened two more times and I followed the same routine.

Finally I reached chandigarh in around 6 Hrs and called Archit to know about the carburetor. He was in Barot, enjoying and the Carb was doing good too.

Sitting on my bed, looking at the trip photographs I realized how hard past five days have been and I recall a small conversation which happened between a PWD officer and i.

Officer: Sir, why do you come to the mountains?
I: To look at the nature and find peace
Officer: If you have this thinking like this at this age, living such a boring life then what will happen to you at our age?

With the same smile, I remember the days gone by and wish to have many more such rides in the future.

                    The End.

That was one hell of a ride Prashant! Absolutely fantastic. Since the beginning of this thread, I stucked to it as glue and finally when it has ended with a healthy notion, I took a deep breath.

You guys have done a terrific job. I have never ever thought of riding into terrain like these but of course, now I have an inspiration.

Great trip, great pics and a great and fascinating log. Three cheers to you both!
