The Ride to the Truth...
Last night, we met a couple of guys working with HSEB who were staying in the same PWD rest house as us. As we interacted, the conversation went towards Sach Pass and they laughed at us when we told them our motive to be in Killar. They took our statement as a joke and suggested to go back from the road we came. But we had something else in mind…
Day 3: The ride to the Truth
Yet again we woke up early today as we wanted to cross the nullah after Bagotu as early as possible and go ahead. Early mornings have its own charisma and if you are on the high reaches of Himalayas then you can be left mesmerized by it. The same happened with us...

The road to Sach deviates from two KMs after Killar and Sach is a good 41 KMs from here but the ride is not an easy one. The gear count never goes beyond two and even if you somehow manage the third gear, it will be one of the rarest of the rare cases as defined in IPC. Slowly and steadily, we moved forward. There was not much of an excitement till now, apart from bad roads and steep incline.

On our way, we met a pickup guy, going in the same direction and we enquired about the nullah. He told us that the pressure was not much, which was a relief, but he also told us that the depth of the nullah is considerable. Not sure of the depth we moved forward.

From now on, the road got exciting. Not only did it become worse, but the incline also increased. It was all up to gear one now as we could not put our bikes even on second gear. Riding at those gears meant a lot of clutch burn and a lot of engine heat up and to tackle the problem we took rest after every 10 KMs or so.
The roads:

As we moved on, we found many herds of sheep and there shepherds along with their watch dogs. They were slowing us down but yet, we were happy as the bikes were getting the due rest.
At one such stoppage, we enquired the laborers about the Nullah and they told us that it is on the next turn.

Yes, there was a flowing water fall and the nullah, but then, there was inclination too along with huge, shiny and slippery rocks, which made it difficult for us to ride ahead. Well, time for ‘one person riding and the other pushing’. The nullah was crossed and it was not too difficult to cross, however, relived of crossing it and Sach just a few KMs away we thought of taking some rest…

Raiders of the lost ark:

As we moved forward, the roads improved a bit but then incline had been our major concern and to give the people a general idea about the kind of incline I am talking about, I clicked this pic.

Yes it has been a difficult ride till now and we thought we would reach Sach without any major hindrance on our way ahead. Somehow, the words of the pickup driver were lingering in my mind, for what he described of the Nullah and the one we got were totally different. He said that the level is deep and the pressure is not much but what we got was a waterfall and around a foot of water.
The one we crossed cannot be it and at the next stoppage, I informed Archit about it. We decided to think about it as and when we cross it and so we moved on. As fate had it, I was right. The one we crossed was not THE ONE. The sheer sight of the nullah sent the shivers down my body.

Reason was not the flow or the length. No, it was a small nullah with average pressure. I get off my bike, pick up a stone and threw it vertically in the nullah and the results were not good. Next, to be sure we had to go inside it and see the depth for ourselves. The moment we entered the water stream, we realized our mistake for the water was as cold as it can be. But then it has to be that cold, as it was coming out of the glacier and going inside another. As we moved on, we realized that the water was Knee deep. Knee of a six feet guy is at a considerable height crossing water in such depth was going to be difficult. After reaching the center, we searched for a stable base and then came back out.
Time to take the bike through it and this time we had to keep the bike running else the water will go inside the silencer. We crossed this nullah too but on the other side, we were totally numb. The cold has crept in along with the water and we could not feel our feet. At that point of time, we decided to move forward in a hope to find some sun so that we could take some rest and heat but what we found was:

Sach was only a couple of KMs from here and we were freezing because of all the cold. At this juncture, all we can think about was a hot cup of tea and some warm place to sit at. I had imagined a small chai stall up at the pass and a small furnace with fire in it. With these thoughts we finally scaled the pass but what we found was nowhere closely related to what we had imagined. Yes, we were face to face with the Truth; we were at The Sach…
