    Day 2 contd.

We continued our ride, Mr. X was facing a peculiar problem with his front brakes. Whenever he used to apply the front brakes the brake lever used to get stuck and as a result the front wheel was not free even upon releasing the lever. We stopped again, he tried but could not manage to fix it. I knew that he had got his bull serviced and even changed the brake pads. But apparantely that was for the rear brake, the front brake was not even touched. I was shocked, as he knew well in advance that we are going in for a 1600- 1700+ kms ride. We continued our journey with Mr. X loosing his front brakes, as he will only use it in case of an emergency. The plan was to reach Pooh by day end and we were taking it easy. We had covered quite a distance in the morning so it was time to take it easy and to find another spot to relax. The roads were broken in patches and as a result Mr. X was leading, while I was being cautious with my baby. As I approached a bridge, the left side of my shoulder bag gave away and the entire weight was on the right side. This resulted in my right hand accidently applying the front brakes and the front end giving away, as all this happend on a left hand turn into the bridge. To prevent the fall, I released the brake and straightened the bike, thus ending up on the wrong side of the road. Thankfully there was no vehicle approaching me from the opposite end, otherwise it would have been catastrophic. I composed myself, took care of the shoulder bag and was preparing to move when I saw Mr. X comming back. I signaled that "all ez well" and we moved on, only to cross the bridge and relax on the other end.

    The bridge

Gosh we were quite hungry and we could not see a decent dhabha/ hotel, etc. We did ask quite a few of the locals and they directed us to the next town. But the towns were so small that they used to come and go without us having anything. We even crossed Wangtu. Wangtu was quite crowded and the only place(s) to eat were few floors above the national highway and I was not in favour of leaving my bike unattended, thus we carried on.

At the confluence of Indus & Satluj

Another incident happened in a small village (probably karcham) just before the Karcham Dam with Mr. X. A pedestrian was trying to stop him and he got confused and pressed the brakes and revved the engine at the same time. This resulted in the bull dying down, refusing to start. We found a decent dhaba, had our lunch. Mr. X called up his mechanic in Delhi and found out that his bull has blown a fuse. Post lunch, he was trying a 'jugaad', while i searched the entire village for a fuse. Surprisingly, there were quite a few electronic shops in the village, but the desired fuse was unavailable. Mr. X's 'jugaad' turns out to be good and we are good to go.

The next stop is quite soon at the dam.

    to be contd.

        Day 2 contd.

Well soon we started again, hesitantly though, as the roads were pretty bad and who knows what lies ahead. The voice of the dhaba owner was continuously bouncing off in my mind. Upon asking him about the road condition ahead of us he laughed and said that these roads (the one's on which we have been riding for a while) are still better, as the Jaypee people maintain it. It would deteriorate further upon crossing the project area.

There's a petrol pump at Reckong Peo, so we tanked up our bikes. The road to Kaza goes straight from the petrol pump; if you want to spend the night at Peo then you gotta climb a hill. As it was dark when we reached the pump, there was no point riding in dark till Puh/ Pooh.

Finding a hotel at Peo, was tough. But I found a banker uncle, who has been living in Peo for the past 30 odd days. He was an auditor and was doing PNB's audit. He said that he's seen all the hotels and the one which has decent room's that do not smell is the one where he's staying and he will help us in getting a room over there. Room was ok, and we did find a spot to park our bikes too.

A strange thing does happen in that region. At night the young guys (locals), would get high on alcohol and weed and start driving their pick ups/ desi suv's. They will, and mark my words, "will" try and loot/ harass you, if you are not in a group. Police is no where to be seen and our new friend the banker uncle said that this happens every night and sometimes things do get out of hand. It's better not to roam around, alone at night. We had an eventful day 2 and though we did not cover a lot of Kms, but hey, who cares, we were having fun riding our bikes and exploring the amazing Himalayas.

          Day 3
We got up at 08:00 a.m. and the view out side our room was

Well it was simply superb, pictures do not justify the same. We sat down in the balcony, just outside our hotel and bask in the sunlight. Soon, our banker uncle joins us and as his native place is in HP, he tells us about the same. He was though bewildered when he comes to know that we have been riding for the past two days and our destination is still 2- 3 days away. He said, the locals have advised him to go and see the beauty of Kaza, but his schedule isn't allowing him. We spent almost an hour chitchatting and then head off to our next desination "Nako".

Soon we reached an awesome waterfall, and the speed at which the water was falling was quite scary to say the least. Some pictures:

After enjoying oursleves, and a lot of pictures , we move on. Roads as described by the dhaba owner, yesterday, were in pathetic condition. It won't be wrong to say that there were no roads, only mud/ sand with pebbles/ rocks and by baby (ninja) was performing beautifully. I was not riding quite hard as the conditions were against it and the idea is not to brake too hard on the corners. I have a gel based seat cover, which I got from NZ, and as the road condition was quite bad it did little to protect my back side and apart from that all was well.

After riding for almost an hour on non existent roads and avoiding small/ big rocks we crossed a bridge and moved towards the right side of Satluj and voila there was a beautiful tarmac. It was butter smooth and it had been almost 24 hours when we last drove on such a tarmac. Quite soon we reached a place that was a perfect spot to relax a bit and I used this opportunity to clean my baby's radiator. Some picchas:

            Day 3 contd.

Puh/ Pooh will come and go and we guys will continue to log in miles, riding all alone. Sometimes, one feels so lonely on those roads that you start introspecting, start missing your family, your children, your city. Strange isn't it, when we are in our daily routine, living a fast paced city life, we want to get away from it all. Go some place quite, some place far, far away from the maddening crowd and when you actually reach/ find such a place you start missing the "city life". I wasn't feeling that lonely though, as we were still exploring and the exictement to reach some unknown place was at its peak and plus Mr. X and I we were still friends, riding together into the unknown territory. The landscape had changed drastically if compared with Narkanda/ Shimla, there was no greenery. I will certainly put 70- 80% blame on this. We do not realise, but green colour does affect our mood. I had my green baby with me and used to stare at her, whenever we used to stop.

Our next spot to relax was at Y intersection where the left road goes to NAKO and the right one goes to TIBET. I just needed a hint from Mr. X to take a right instead of a left and explore. But Mr. X was in no mood for such an adventure. Some pics:

So "as per the original plan" we didn't venture out towards Tibet, even though it was 25- 30 Kms (one side). I reluctantly got ready to ride on, as Mr. X zoomed passed me. As soon as I started riding I reached another breathtaking spot and pictures were mandatory. Few pics:

As Mr. X was riding hard on those beautiful roads and I was busy shooting pics, stopping every now and then, the distance amongst us increased. 20- 30 mins into the ride he stopped for me. We were in such a beautiful place that everytime we stopped, clicking pictures was mandatory.

As Mr. X has been waiting for me for quite sometime and all this while we have been climbing up the hill on some very twisty roads, he was the first one to ride ahead, while I took it easy.

I don't know whether it was plain luck or what but as soon as I started riding ahead I saw a road sign. As I was ripping hard on those roads I had to take a "U- turn" to click its pic:

So again I will go on a shooting spree and the distance between me and Mr. X would continue to increase.

As I was not expecting such a thing, it came as a surprise, a pleasant surprise.

The funny part was that there wasn't any sign of it when we started climbing up (approaching Nako from Puh), but there was a road sign informing commuters of the same (from Nako to Puh).

As there are "gata loops" enroute to leh; there's "Kazigs" enroute to Kaza, before Nako from the Reckong Peo side. God knows how many loops are there, I did'nt count, but it was amazing riding on them. Road condition, I believe, was better than "gata loops". Some pics:

Its good that you did not take the right turn to Namgia before Khab. That road goes up to shipki la which is the border post beyond which is tibet. But in all probability you would have been stopped at the dogri check post beyond tashiganj.

                      Good pics BTW

Just wanted to ride till the Tibet border, click some pics and head back to Nako. There's always "next time" for that.

                          Day 3 contd.

The twisties continued for a while and all this while we were gaining altitude. It took us another hour to reach Nako and the time by our watch was 5:30 p.m. As Nako is a small town and Mr. X was a better negotiator than me, plus I was riding an expensive bike and to approach a hotel owner on one would mean that he will jack up the rates, it was decided that Mr. X would ride ahead and find a suitable place to stay with a secure place to park the bikes too. I preferred to stay just outside the village, by the helipad. Mr. X would return back for me once the deal is done. As the camera was with him, I started using my i- phone and the result is as follows:

                          the village(Nako)

                          the helipad

                          Way to the Lake

Our pit stop for the day(hotel)

End pf day 3, day 4 comming up soon.

                          comments pls...
