  • A quick ride to Hawk's Nest in Delaware River Valley

Last weekend, me & my wife went for a daytrip to Hawk's Nest in Upper Delaware river valley, at the border of the states of New York & Pennsylvania.

Hawk's next is very popular among bikers & auto enthusiasts due to its twisties and scenic vistas. Many car commercials have been filmed on this road. Its is actually located on NY Route 97, which travels alongside the Delaware river for about 70 miles/110 kms. from Port Jervis to Hancock.

Total Distance of the trip: 250 miles/400 Kms.

We started in the morning around 11am and took a short break at Greenwood Lake.

Next stop was at Port Jervis. Here a vintage train locomotive is on the turntable along with some vintage coaches at the back. The train that you see in the background are the commuter trains to NYC that are stranded at the Port Jervis station, since some portion of the track was washed away by floods caused by Hurricane Irene.

Then we got on Rt. 97 to go towards Hawk's nest and beyond.
Here are some pics that I tried taking while riding.

Unfortunately, the Hawk's Nest portion of the road was under construction and only one side of the road was open. so we decided to keep going & stop at Hawk's nest on our way back.

Here's at Roebling bridge. Built in 1847, it is the oldest existing wire-suspension bridge in the US. It was designed by the same guy who did Brooklyn bridge. It does not look like a suspension bridge but look closely in the second pic, you will see the suspension cable through the woodwok. it was originally designed as an aquaduct, then converted to a roadway in the early 1900s.

Checking out the history of the bridge.

Then we rode upto Callicoon, then turned back to spend some time on Hawk's nest.

    Another short break

    Finally at Hawk's nest

Half side of the road is closed for constructions & repairs. Imagine the fun of riding this road. I'll return again once the work is completed on the road.

BTW, I did not etch my name on the wall

After goofing around for few minutes we hightailed it back home.

Fall season is coming now and more rides are in order.

Nice ride and thanks for sharing.

I was doing some research on ride routes in North East USA and seems madame Irene has done fairly good damage there.

              Thanks guys...

@Haroon: Yes, a lot of good riding roads were washed away due to flash floods during Irene, but they should be be fixed shortly.
When are you planning to come..??

Not decided, but probably April or May 2012.

It might be a bit cold in Northern New England area in April. Moreover the trees would not be fully green as the leaves would just be coming out after winter.

The best time to visit New England is in Fall season in mid-October. thats when the foliage colours are at its peak and it becomes incredibly beautiful everywhere you look. You have seen some of the fall foliage pics in my last years ride report. Those pics do not even begin to cover the beauty of the fall season.

I would suggest, if it is logistically possible for you, plan your visit around that time.

Thanks Picky and fully agree with your points on the fall season. The beauty is unrivalled. Unfortunately, this ride has to be clubbed with my family vacation (kids summer vacation), when me & wife want to take a small 7 day moto adventure side break so I am left with no choice. Anyway still in fluid stage right now. I would have preferred to also attend the Americade, but that is way out of our schedule.
