DAY-3 26 April (Center Harbor, NH to Middlebury, VT)

I guess he was contemplating what we 2-legged nuts were up to!!

General view of our workplace for a week

From Conway, we enter the beautiful White Mountain National Forest and ride the spectacular Kancamagus Highway, which is a bikers delight with its twists, turns and long sweepers all on a nice sunny day. There is a fast flowing stream that accompanies us and there are a few scenic lookouts at one of which we stop to take in the scenery & some pics. If you wonder amidst all the English names, where does Kancamagus fit in? Well going back to history, Kancamagus (which in native means- The fearless One) was one of the most notable & feared leaders of the Pennacook Indians. He relentlessly fought the English settlers in the 1600s and this highway is named after him.

Small video of the Kancamagus Hwy ride

Riding the K1600GTL on the Kancamagus Hwy from Conway to Lincoln - YouTube

Back to the present, the Kancamagus highway terminates at Lincoln, but we continue on this Rt 112 passing the small towns of North Woodstock, Lost River & Swiftwater after which a nice white & green board welcomes us into the state of Vermont. As we ride deeper into Vermont, the beauty of this place starts captivating us. It reminds us of a milder version of the European interior parts with the abundant greenery, smooth rolling hills, meadows, streams, pine trees. We are on Rt 302 and the wells river is accompanying us on the right. We soon turn left southwards on the I-91 and head towards Bradford after which we turn right thru some inner roads towards the direction of Chelsea.

Along the way came across these hardcore easyriders!

Always a friendly wave to road crews as our gratitude for maintaining our biking playground

What on earth is that ferocious looking thing???

Thanks for your kind words Juris. Yes, the flag is there to constantly remind us that any of our actions in a foreign land reflects on our country as a whole.

DAY-4 27 April (Middlebury, VT to Lake George, NY)

Kitted out and after loading the luggage, although we were supposed to take Rt 7 North, we headed the other way back into town for some essential purchases. Today, we are also scheduled to have a new experience on our global rides, to ride our bike straight onto an auto ferry, that will take us across Lake Champlain and at the other end we ride off the ferry. Anyway, this morning from downtown Middlebury our GPS decides to give us a sight-seeing trip and takes us thru some nice & deserted country roads for reasons only best known to Mr. Garmin before putting us on the Rt 7.

We ride off the ferry and get on Rt 9N and pass Elizabethtown where we stop for a simple lunch at Stewarts which is a chain popular in this part of NY state selling groceries and hot food. We were to head towards Lake Placid however the dark clouds in that direction were not too confidence inspiring hence we head on the scenic highway 73 and doing a relaxed ride in the Adirondacks before joining the I-87 south passing Schroon lake, Warrensburg and then turning left heading towards Diamond Point and now we are almost closing in on the wonderful town of Lake George.

DAY-5 28 April (Lake George, NY to Brattleboro, VT)

We move around there a bit and learn the hard reality that the off-season may be great for hotel discounts & sparse traffic etc, but surely not for the scores of local attractions that are still in their slumber!! So time to soberly hit the road. Besides, a little earlier, things between Mrs & Mr Adventure were not going too well due to the mis-planning of this trip and things hit a melting point & exploded. I guess we both had different expectations from such a trip and with very little planning it was natural at some point some steam had to be let off. Anyway, we leave the serene Lake George town & hit the road in a south east direction back towards Vermont. After some miles and some more clearing up of hearts, throats & sweet talks on the intercom, things get back to normal, and the intercom is suddenly active & lively again.

Excellent food & wonderful service. Highly recommended restaurant for anybody passing thru this place....We head back to the room and wrap up another wonderful day.

DAY-6 29 April (Brattleboro, VT to Mystic, CT)

Getting to the ride, fortunately by now the sun has come out and its not as freezing as it was an hour earlier, but sure its still cold by the tropical standards we both are used to. We straight hook onto the Interstate-91 South and soon enter the state of Massachusetts just before Bernardston and proceed some more miles further before getting off the I-91 towards Sunderland on the Rt 116 completely avoiding the claustrophobic geography of Springfield & Hartford cities continuing thru Amherst and passing the neatly laid out imposing red brick building complexes of the campus of University of Massachusetts.

Riding further we pass the small communities of Belchertown, Bondsville and stop at Palmer for a Coffee & Doughnut break. As we are riding out 2 lady riders come in riding a Goldwing trike & a Harley. Soon after we pick Rt 32 crossing the village of Monson, we bid farewell to the state of MA and make our grand entry into the wonderful state of Connecticut at Stafford.

The Rt 32 curves and bends and rolls constantly together with elevation changes making it another wonderful asphalt playground for bikers and I am enjoying every bit of it. Sure my lieutenant is also enjoying the journey from the comfort of the wonderful pillion seat of BMWs flagship luxo-touring bike. We tick off a few more towns enroute such as Willimantic, Franklin & stop for lunch near Norwich at the all too familiar Burger King. With our tummies refueled, we then branch off onto Rt 395 fast-tracking towards Waterford and then getting on I-95 east that swiftly puts us into the serene & historic town of Mystic which exudes New England charm.

At Mystic, we skip the famed Aquarium and gun for the Mystic Seaport. With about an hour to closing time, we are lucky to get a discounted ticket!! (Wow, now we are Mrs & Mr Discount Adventure!). Here we get to see various exhibits on the Mystic river including the famous Charles W. Morgan, which is the last remaining wooden whaleship and the oldest American commercial vessel still in existence. A little on its history- built in 1841, she sailed on 37 voyages around the globe during an 80-year whaling career. BTW, they caught whales and its oil was processed onboard and this oil was what ran inside the engines of most motor vehicles back in the day. The vessel came to Mystic Seaport in 1941 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. Currently, it is undergoing an extensive restoration which we got to see first-hand onboard and it will be re-launched to embark on one final voyage to historic ports in New England in 2014. We visit a few more exhibits of re-created parts of this once thriving ship building community & round off our visit to the seaport.

                      The Pharmacy back then

After a quick check on the GPS we start calling and luckily get a nice price at the Hyatt Place which is 6 miles from downtown. After checking into the hotel, to cool the inner coils of our intestines, we ride back into town to conclude the day with a romantic seafood dinner at the S&P Oyster Restaurant located on the edge of the Mystic river with a nice twilight view of the boats on the river with the backdrop of the historic Bascule Bridge.

The restaurant is a little pricey but wonderful ambience, food & very courteous (sometimes overwhelming) service. We head back to the hotel and hit the sack.

DAY-7 30 April (Mystic, CT to New Port, RI to Boston, MA)- Last Day

With a nice English breakfast (what else do you expect in New England!), loading up the panniers & bags, we head back into town to shop for some tiny curios. After some loafing around due to road construction work we are ready for the long highway. Being the last day of our ride and having to visit a few attractions in Newport, Rhode Island, before heading to finally dock at Boston, we slab the interstate 95 east. With the six pistons blazing inside the all powerful GTL, before we know, there is a white board welcoming us into the state of Rhode Island.

The famed Bascule bridge in Mystic

After some more enjoyable zipping on the highway, we dip right onto Rt 138 East that passes thru the calm & beautiful towns of Kingston & Saunderstown. We then get on the long & hunchback Jamestown Bridge with beautiful scenery accompanying us. We pass Jamestown and then get onto the long Newport Bridge that lands directly into the touristic & historic city of Newport, Rhode Island.

The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, Kingscote, Isaac Bell House, Hunter House, Chepstow

Here we wrap up our visit to the lovely city of Newport in Rhode Island and start our final leg of the trip towards home. With lots of stop & go traffic in Newport city, we decide to take our lunch break out on the highway on Rt 114. Bad decision since the long delay caused us to lose our appetites due to our hunger being put on a waiting list. After lunch at Burger King outside Fall River, we continue North on Rt 24 and join onto I-495 which after some miles merges with the I-95 near Mansfield.

Anyways we have now got onto the I-93 and after some more miles of the boring interstate, slowly the traffic is getting thicker and towards the distant horizon we are gradually seeing hazy images of highrise buildings, which unmistakably is Boston. We turn off towards Quincy & ride into downtown Boston on the beautiful memorial drive along Charles river.

They should have added a line- And a sleepy pillion rider!!!!

After a small break, we get back on the bike and follow the GPS in peak traffic towards the suburb of Malden- home-sweet-home, where the grand reception committee of our son Adil, daughter Amal and their cousins, Numair & Norah are eagerly awaiting to welcome back the weary travelers.

Arriving back at the parking of- Home Sweet Home

Our trusty steed taking a breather

This brings a sweet end to our week long New England excursion on two wheels.
                        Distance travelled 170 miles

Thanks for coming along with us on yet another wonderful riding experience for me & wife on our lovely planet.

                        Cheers
