  • Le Tour de Munnar

It was more than a year since my dad bought me a 220. But until now I haven't made any tour because my mother has an ideology about bikes, that touring on it is the most dangerous thing on the world. Then with a hard struggle I convinced her say to yes for a short trip to munnar.
So me and my buddy Aravind decided to roll on to munnar on 4th January with me on my 220 and him on his R15v2. And Later on my friend prashanth joined us as my pillion.

And finally the day came. My excitement woke me early before alarm sounded. Our plan was to start at 7.30 from pollachi, so I got myself ready in time and so do prashanth. I picked him up, went to fuel station and filled 500rs of petrol. And we waited for Aravind. But as usual he did his delay and at last we started at 8.30am.

So we started our trip towards udumalpet with an pace of 80kmph. And we reached there within 30min. We finished our breakfast there. And continued our journey to munnar. There came the first check post after udumalpet, we registered ourselves there and moved on.
With Aravind on the lead and I pursued him. The road had a lot of patches and pot holes which made the ride bumpy. After a 20km ride then came the chinnar check post. And from there the roads were little bit better and it had a couple of hairpin bends and lot of corners. Which was fun to ride.

After all this things we finally reached munnar at 1pm. It was nothing as we expected. It was bright sunny day with mild breeze. No chill, no rain, nothing as a hill station. Then we moved further and reached Mattupatti dam took few clicks and went to kundala dam.

After this we returned to munnar, had our lunch and it's already 4pm. So we moved slowly down the hill through those bumpy roads. On return we spotted a bison and few forest pigs.
And we reached pollachi by 6.45pm, by where the trip ended.

    Trip details
    From: pollachi
    To: munnar
    Distance:115km
    Total km traveled(to&fro): 275km
    Road condition: below average
    Fuel filled:7 lit
    Fuel consumed:6lit approx
Mileage obtained: 42+ kmpl (thanks to Joel's ffe).
Camera used: HTC sensation & xperia mini.

And most of these good pics were shot by Prashanth.

And thanks to all Xbhp bikers who inspired me and made me a biker.

Nice pics. Me too loved the car drawn on stone.

But why are you guys without riding gear? No jacket, no gloves, absolutely NIL armor? One fall and touring will be history!
        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
Because everyone who passes, isn't a martyr!

Welcome aboard to touring on two wheels. Good place to start your ride though, Munnar is one such wonderful place and your lucky that you stay close to it Invest on some good protections if your planning to make more such rides in future, let your parents understand the importance on riding gears, the investment would save a lot of hospital charges and most importantly the time and pain you have to undergo. Practise safe driving.By the way Wonderful pics and congrats.

That's the mentality of most of the parents but its you who has to take care of it broda !
Its you who knows how much dangerous a crash is even on 30-40 k.m. speed.
Get a basic one at least to start with.

              And believe me :
In Shirt, 100 k.m. speed OMG HUNDRED ?
Inside a jacket, gloves and proper shoes with knee guard even on 120 you'll feel safe like just EIGHTY !

I might sound rude but Use them to avoid paying to the doctor, making a history.

I got 22 stitches on my waist, My trashed 220 I sold it for just 18k (Was just 11 months old) my daddy paid 90k to the doctor and I was on hospital bed for 6 months, Home bed for 5 months, For 1 damn week I couldn't feel my legs same as a paralyzed guy but some external Doctor helped me, Studies affected, Personal life was hell for the time being.
              Enough said, Rest on you.
First I was Scared But then We Made a Deal

                          Re: Le Tour de Munnar

The below document is about the same trip written by my friend Prashanth.... you'll find more details in better english..... i should have posted this an year ago....

                          “Tour de Munnar”…..Experience of a pillion … !
As the curtains were drawing closer I realized that I haven’t done anything great during my course of engineering. Myself and my friend who I fondly refer him as the fastest Indian had the plan of touring , as the name suggests in bike . As any ordinary student does this was just a plan with no execution . kept lingering my mind, and over a period of time i almost forgot it . So one fine day our Fastest Indian came up with his master plan , his counterpart being our sexy Arvind Raj aka the second fastest Indian . the date was decided and so does the place , which happened to be Munnar –A well known hill station situated in the western ghats bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerla .The date was on 4th January 2013 , I would not like to mention the time because , being from a student community and by all means majority miss this thing called punctuality , we started at around 08.30 am at Pollachi from were the bikers are from. I hopped onto Fastest Indian‘s which was a Rahul Bajaj’s offering to India in the form Pulsar 220f .His fellow driving partner was(is) driving R15 v2.0. Since the drive was on the Tamil month of Margazhi we anticipated some mild showers and teeth clattering we had our sweaters on .Since our Fastest Indian had this free flow kinda exhaust the engine roared to life.
I was the pillion I had this privilege of viewing everything in which I am good at. We had a smooth start and the engine was rev-ing normally with few gear shifts and as the town traffic just eased out . our fastest Indian had the throttle under his control, the engine rev-ing at more than 7k per min still had the power in it. At one particular point of time the speedometer displayed a whooping 113km/hr and our fastest Indian realizing the nature of Indian road has the speed under his control. Since we were marching towards Udumalpet , an another town nearby the road had this deserted look , with windmill towering high with its dull rotations owing to the poor winds. We reached in half an hour and had our morning nashta. Since we were ignorant about the routes, our tech savvy Berlin checked out the routes in maps. We started heading towards our Lakshya , Udumalpet being a town was getting itself dressed up in the name of UGD and other development process leading big poth holes and blisters. We had a topsy turvy ride which was pretty exciting. We passed some schools and students arguing about the models of bike , thanks to Berlin’s free flow which made this crowd attraction . And I was just awing at them !.. After a period of 15 min we reached the outskirts , since it was the time of Pongal the crops were ready to be reaped and we passed through some of the paddy fields in their final creamy brown shades .While I was admiring the nature’s beauty god dint seem like to like it, he irritated me with the milestones in the agricultural lands in the name of development and hoarding announcing the benefits of investing on land. I just tried not to remember those things and the journey continued for some time and roads showing a deserted look. All through the way I imagined myself driving through a boulevard , in a way the nature dint disappoint . After some exciting spots we happen to arrive at chinnar check post and the person incharge had some formal question and enquired about the reasons .After signing some papers , our fastest Indian had his hands on the accelerator and his legs getting ready for some quick gear shifts in the alien road which was ahead us.
We crossed the kerla check-post and passed through it in a jiffy. There were signs welcoming us to the place with some tiger images and some environmental quotes. Since there were no one on the road the engine was happily revving and gear box happily doing its work . after travelling around 60km we decided to have quick snaps in a deserted wood house . We had a good cam obviously in bad hands there were shaky images but I never minded that , after all when we pluck some 10 roes there is every probability of encountering a thorn. We started and passed through some really rough patches and people travelling in mini tempo travelers . We passed through some hairpin bends and I had this visualization of passing through a number of such bends but actually that was not the case , Berlin was busy with frequent shifts owing to the unexpected turns and poor shape of the roads .I dint disturb his concentration since vigilant vision is required because in India you cant expect the obvious things to happen, myself obssed with admiring the nature .Meanwhile sun was cursing us with scorching heat spoiling the mood of a hill side travel. Wild shrubs , lovers spot adorned with their names , and few hoardings , and display stones announcing the distance to be travelled. We came across some really great spots and I just envied the nature , true to Wordsworth line “Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance”. We rested a bit took some really good shots and both the drivers admiring the tickling sound of their engines .Myself exploring various options in the HTC Sensation’s advanced options and taking snaps of the drivers and their valentines (Bike) . I made my experimentations with idiotic camera angles with the drivers as my test piece. We started travelling comparatively at a higher speed due to the time factor and the monsters really had much under their kitty , Arvind raj was nearly flat out in the corners showing his driving skill , I was just dumb stuck . We passed through one of the finest tea estates in the country with highway placards announcing the names and the distance. I just gave my “Hi’s” to the school champs who were passing by , I could spot some really interesting persons with not so common outfits.
After travelling further we came across a village obviously not readable or understandable , we saw a small stream and Arvind Raj stopped his vehicle and we parked the vehicles and went downstream , and had some fun. Since we were a bunch of petrol heads true to it we came across a stone pained and carved in the form of car which made us hyper excited and I had goosebumps in my hands . And as any college grad we had snaps in some foolish poses and artificial looks . The water was really chill and sweet which was like a nectar in the throat. The region was completely surrounded by sandalwood tress and banners boasting about it . We passed through Kannan Devan estates and there were some tea estates tag named TATA , being a fan of TATA brand I could not take my eyes off .After some super cool turns we neared Munnar , nature welcomed us with some chill air which smelled of Eucalyptus. There were some local dwellers selling wild honey and other tribal products . At last we reached our destination , where the local population and pollution took over. Narrow streets with Indian touches , there were number of “pardesi’s “ (Foreigners). And local guides advising and cajoling them to take their taxi’s . Since I was new to Munnar , I expected a fair amount of Malayalam speaking persons , again a misjudgment , the town was actually loaded with Tamilians and I correlated the spots
with those featuring in Myna movie and we proceeded to Mattupatti dam , after a some drive we reached it with tourist forming a beehive as any tourist spot. We parked our vehicles and moved to an isolated spot where we had a sit out and some chit chats about the various encounters we faced during the drive . I admired the vastness of the dam and was looking for the sources in vain . Killing few minutes, the engine roared to life and the passerby’s awing at the exhaust sound which was like harmonics including the foreigners . Travelling some kms we reached the Kundala dam , I was hunting for some historical relations due to its architectural style and Travancore King dint disappoint me , there was a stone erected announcing the year and other details. Still the time was post noon , we felt that it was time to wind up the “through” journey , we parked and went through the woods and had a amateur photo shoot and started towards Munnar. My stomach was virtually drained out of food and my eyes hunting for some good hotels , we went to a hotel , myself immersed in Tamil sambar while my fellow mates were still in driving mood . We had the lunch and started again. In the mean time , Arvind Raj slipped by and sprained his legs , and there weren’t any major incidents involved by gods grace. We started again , my hands or rather my thumbs started to ache due the rough road conditions and undulating nature of it , I hopped to Yamaha R15 v 2.0 which Arvind raj was driving and it was just awesome to sit at the back of it , thanks to the unavailability of the cross rails in the Japanese Engineered vehicle . We travelled downhill continuously for nearly 2hrs and as any parent they started calling us for the well being , we reached Udumalpet in the late evening , its was nearly dusk and stars smiling at us . We travelled towards Pollachi at some really high speed in over 20BHP powered engineered marvel. Berlin being a native of Pollachi dropped by , and Arvind Raj retiring in his hostel room and myself way back home in a Leyland !!! … I was dog tired and was aching with slumber. I had a good night sleep and shared my experience with my mom the very next day and now I am sharing with you …..!
It was a great experience travelling with two bikers , though a pillion the trip was worth a shot and had everything in it !.. A big thanks to both bikers
