Thus the wait and planning for my annual 4-day ride begins. The last one back in September 2011, the Western Ghats ride, was just perfect thanks to @Phanikar's planning. I did not want this one to be any lesser!

    Gokarna? Dandeli? Murdeshwar? Chikmagalur? Agumbe?
    Beach Shacks? Homestay? Lodge?
What do I do there for 4 days? Which places do I cover?
    Ufff.. The confusion!

I finally fix it for Gokarna. I got my friend/colleague Chandra Shekar to tag along, who was embarking on his first ever long ride!

What a ride it turned out to be! It had it all - The calmness of the sea shore, the chillness of the hills, the curves on the roads and the curves on the beach... It couldnt get any better than this...

    The First Looonnnngggg Day :

Me and Chandra leave Mekhri circle by about 5 AM. We were joined by a colleague of mine, Sunil (FZ), who was on his way to Siddapura near Sagar. Bangalore was crowded, even at such an early hour of the day! I felt as if everyone was off to a vacation just like me! After a few much-needed hot cups of chai just before the Nelamangala flyover and then completely not noticing Phanikar, Bharath, Jai and Arnab who happened to be near the flyover, on their way In Seach Of Mallali Falls, we three zip off. The morning wasnt that cold. But I forgot that we were now leaving Bangalore and that's when the blanket of fog started.
    .

    .

After the running noses, frozen hands and wet visors, I notice the sun peeping out and search for a location to stop... and what a view it was...
    .

    .

    .

    .

Our next stop was Bhadra Reservoir after we bid goodbye to my Sunil who was in a hurry to reach his home. It was a 15 km detour and well worth it! It was beautiful. I had never seen a reservoir filled with so much water!
    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

I had my doubts before we reached Bhadra, due to he lack of rains, but I was pleasantly surprised. I wanted to sit there whole day and just stare out but time was running out and we had a lot more to cover for the day. We then pass through Shimoga and Sagar. Beautiful roads within the forests...
    .

    .

    .

    .

Chandra hadnt been to Jog and it was just a 2 km detour. We went for it even though we knew there would be no "falls" as such.
    .

    .

    .

Once we were done with lunch, the race began. The race to reach Gokarna before sun-down and catch a glimpse of sunset. I was unable to recollect any of roads after Jog. All I was concentrating on was the position of the sun in the sky!

Gokarna was an elusive destination, It seemed as if it was farther every time I took a turn. Even Google maps are deceptive. Gokarna is about 10 kms away once you take the turn from the NH. It doesnt seem so on GMaps :bh2: The town is a very small one with hardly two streets and even those are narrow. Its not hard to notice the abundance of tourists, both national and international, in such a small town! The road to the main beach goes right beside the Mahabaleshwar temple with small shops lined up both sides.

Now back to the Race. I knew the Sun had won and I lost. The only relief was that I had another evening to spend at Gokarna during which I can obviously view the sunset (or so I thought!). Since the sun was down, we did not waste time. Reached our stay - Nimmus House. A decent place with ultra soft bed. The bed was HEAVEN! More on the stay and its pics later.

We had a quick snack and it was time for the tripod. Thanks to my inexpsrience with the DSLR and all failed attempts to capture the stars, all I manage is one good snap of the new moon.

Day Two - The peaceful beaches and The Backbreaking Yana :

"Sir, there is a shorter route to Yana. Its only 30 kms from here. You can reach there soon. Even Vibhooti falls in on the way which you can cover too" That was the last conversation we had with Nimmu guy. We accordingly plan to spend the morning visiting beaches and then head to Yana and return to view the Sunset, way before time! Oh yea, the plan, we thought, was good. :bh2:

We wake up early at 6 AM and decide to walk. There are a total of 5 beaches in Gokarna - Main beach, Kudle beach, Om beach, Paradise beach and Half Moon beach. Each are a distance of 15 minutes walk in the order I've typed. The path from Main beach to Kudle goes over small hills right beside the sea with occasional views of the sea.
        .

        .

        .

        Kudle Beach..
        .

        .

        .

        .

Being on Kudle was so peaceful. I cannot recollect any other place where I felt so peaceful. This beach is not accessible by road and hence not many people around and no vehicular noise. All you listen to is the sound made by the waves.. The views were contrasting - from loads of cows mooing around to the playfull doggies to girls in bikins doing yoga and meditating. (Sorry no pics of the latter )

The tummy started growling and it was time for breakfast, a breakfast by the beach at the shacks.
        .

        .

We sat there for a long time enjoying the views. I wanted to be on that beach for the whole day. I regretted my choice of stay at Nimmu's. Staying in the shacks beside the beach would have been such an experience.

We next set off to Om Beach, the most popular one. The route from Kudle to Om Beach...
        .

        .

        .

The first view of Om Beach...
        .

        .

        .

        .

The Shacks got into our head. We ran into yet another one and ordered some Lassi and stared at the sea yet again.
        .

        .

The Nikons did a terrific job..
        .
        .

After getting to know what Peace is, at the beaches, it was time to head to the famous Yana. The info given to us was that it only 30 kms and road aint that bad! We planned accordingly and left Gokarna by 12 PM and thought to be back by 5 PM by max! As we crossed the NH after Gokarna, we started to realize, that the short ride is gonna be a tiresome one! The first 15 kms was filled with potholes every inch! But later the roads became better...
        .

        .

We finally reach the Vibhooti Falls after some ncie off-roading session. The falls was serene. The water flows down through multiple steps and water is surprisingly white and sparkling. That can be attributed to the limestone over which the water flows before reaching this spot!
        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

There is a natural swimming pool formed in which you take a cool dip. But we were short of time and had to skip it From here, the road to Yana gets progressively worse. We heave a sign of relief after we reach Yana. The rock formation is something like a miracle.
        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

        .

It was about 4 PM, the time we were expecting to return. But we were still at Yana!! Hence we decided to take the Sirsi route expecting it to be better since its a State Highway. Alas! It had major repairs going on with major concrete-ization. The distance was 55 kms to Gokarna. The race started again, the race between me and the Sun. I dont think I had ever pushed the bike so much ever! I felt bad for the bike, but I could not afford to miss the Sunset, not for the second time. This was my last evening at Gokarna and I just had to make it on time!

            That is the exact location.
It is a beautiful place. I have been there around 12 years ago. There was no road to Yana then. Just a bunch of Trax Town and Country UV's used to take ppl there.
I hope it is the same now.

This is the best route - Yana Shiva Temple to NH17 - Google Maps. Although the road is being repaired and hence broken every few kilometers!

Day Two (Continued) - The best Sunset ever! :

After the mad race with traffic and the roads, we reach just at the right time. We take a left to Om beach and after one of the turns, i just slam my brakes!!!

                This is what I saw...

                .

                .

                .

                .

We sat there, relishing the beauty of the nature and digesting what we saw earlier. It got dark pretty soon and we returned to our lodge to get freshened up. We spent the rest of the evening at Kudle beach just lying down on the shore and enjoying in the water.

Day Three - Back on saddle :

It was going to be a long day. We had already scrapped our original plans of Agumbe after knowing that it would be another back-breaking route and had to reach our homestay near Sringeri before dark. Chandra wanted to visit Murdeshwara as it was only around 30 kms from Honnavara. The homestay guy suggested to take the Shimoga - NR Pura - Balehonnur route to his homestay since it was newly laid. We took it easy, woke up late, lubed the bike chains and started off by about 10 AM.

Some pics of the Nimmus House at Gokarna..

                .

Murdeshwara was crowded even on a Monday

                .

                .

We finished off the lunch there and headed to Balehonnur where our stay was booked at Prakruthi Homestay. This was a long ride through forest routes. Shimoga - NR Pura - Balehonnur. I selected the route on the lodge owner's insistence as he said it is a beautiful stretch! Sure it was...
                .
                Sharavati River view...

                .

                .

After some roaming in the dark, we finally reach the homestay. Its a lovely place.

                .

                .

The place was so calm. I gave a shot at some failed attempts at Star trail shots. Disappointed, I hit the bed!

***TININII ...TININII...TININII... *** Its 6 AM. The homestay owner Mr. Pradeep had promised a good view of the Sunrise right from the room. I did not want to miss it!
Woke up Chandra and out we were in a jiffy. The rooms are right beneath a small hill which leads to the estate. It was more like a forest
                          .

                          .

The views were not bad but not what I expected. It was a cloudy "sunrise".

The plan for the day was to ride through Kudremukh and then head back to Bangalore. the Karnataka Tour Guru Phanikar. He suggested to take the Sringeri-SkBorder-Kudremukh-Kalasa route. We knew it would be a long long day. But we decided to have some fun before we left. The whole area was ours since there were no other occupants and this is what we did

                          .

We stop somewhere inbetween at Kelagar Tea Point. We had noticed a lot of adverts on the way for this, so wanted to try. The tea was refreshing.
                          .

                          .

The above was the last snap of the ride. I was more worried about reaching Bangalore as I hate riding in the night and I knew how dark the Hassan-Bangalore road could get. The diversions were invisible and there a hell lot of them! Very less traffic on the route which meant we had to rely on our meager 35W bulbs for lighting up the highway. Finally we reached the Nelamangala flyover with eyes wide open like an owl.

We stop after Mekhri to bid goodbye. It was one awesome ride, awesome company, zero incidents, with the machines performing beautifully and locations turning out to be better than expected. Thanks to everyone who helped me plan up the route, to Ajit for the saddle bags (without which if would be a pita ) and special thanks to Chandra Shekar for keeping faith in me and riding his longest ride ever!

                          More rides to follow...
