  • [Photo Feature]: INDIA Capital New-Delhi to NEPAL capital Kathmandu

    Hi Guys,

This is my first post, I am new to posting threads and comments online but i am a old biker at the age of 27 .
I Have gone through many threads in this site but rarely share my views and comments. After a while i have collected my courage to show my silly grammatical mistakes and a trip experience with the people's who share same passion which i have "TOURING"

I have been touring from last 3 years and riding bike from last 10 years.

This blog is all about My first trip to Kathmandu with other two bikers Ami "Amresh" and Fat "Reneav"

I was thinking to go on a tour "Cross country" from very long period but most of my friends backstep at the name of touring on BIKES.

One day i heard two people in my Office team discussing about a trip to Nepal and i just jumped in the discussion.
During the discussion a crazy idea appeared to go to Nepal on BIKES and all three of us say yes at the first go.

As this is going to be my and Ami first trip we have started planing almost 4 months before the trip dates.
We have created so many plans and modifying them that is altogether a different story.

On 11 Feb 2012 The trip began without any touring experience and very high spirit to reach and come back to Delhi from Kathmandu.

    Trip Details:

Riders : Amresh, Reneav, and Manoj.
Bikes: RE classic 350, RTR 180 and ZMR
    Mile stone planned:
Delhi - Nanital- Almora - Mahender nagar (Nepal)- Buthwal- Pokahra - Kathmandu - Gorakpur (India) - Lucknow - Delhi
    Mile stone executed:
Delhi - Nanital - Mahender nagar (Nepal)- Baradia national park - Pokahra - Kathmandu - Nautanwa (India) - Lucknow - Etawa - Delhi
    Riding accessories :
Jackets , Tool kits, Medical kits, Ropes, Helmets, knee Guards, Elbow Guards, Gloves, puncture kit, snacks, 5 Bags and money.
And few promises not to cross 60 KMPH which was obviously broken on the very first day:

    New Delhi to Nainital

All three of us met at a common point on NH 24 (Near Reneav house) at 8 in morning almost 2 hours late from the proposed time and started from there to Nanital thinking to reach by 6 PM.
We didn't have any idea about the route and the conditions of the road. Reneav told us about some riding signals to stop, speed up and signals to riding on a particular Speed, Slow down etc. which we modified later in the trip.

We had many stopping points to have tea, snacks and food because of which we started climbing to Nanital at some rough time of 5:30 Pm.
All three of us committed some stupid mistakes on the road like driving fast changing the lane without looking in side mirror and so on but because of Pure Luck nothing bad happens to any one of us.

Thanks guys for your positive response,

So the story continue from Nanital where we drop plan to going to Almora (because there is no border crossing allowed to us )

At the time of climbing down because RTR cheap rear disc pad its starting getting hot and brake started getting stuck Causing sudden skid. But because of good luck and holy guideline form FAT i survived from being hit by a BOLERO on the curve.

Luckily we climbdown from the hill without any scratch and started our journey towards Mahendra nagar Nepal, I have no idea which route we took at that time but the roads are Heavenly, Crossing dry river beds through a jungle is one of the most beautiful thing which i have done so far.

As soon as we entered Mahender nagar we saw a group of people running with burning tires, that scene scared us like hell, And we started searching shad/ hotel room for three of us and safe place for our bikes, We have visited more then 20 hotels and found out that most of them have a stinking smell of "chamili ka tail" we have inquired the people regarding the group and everyone is giving us different answer which again increase the doubt of getting looted and killed in Nepal for three of us and that thing made us suspicious on everything happening around us.

We finally ended our hunt for a hotel room. We got a nice hotel room with AC for three of us and the most horrifying thing was, we three were the only guys in the hotel and in the visitor register last entry was from some dutch guy in 2008

Well, here is what happened after we left Mahendra nagar.

Our Goal was to reach Butwal via nepalgunj..

we had to cross 468 kms to reach Butwal.

We were rocking and having fun on the straight roads of Nepal and admiring the Beauty of Nature.. Taking Loads and loads of snaps..

As we went along, we were happy to see the school kids playing on the roads on their way to school.. They were waving their hands on seeing us.. We took some time to take pics of few kids who kept asking us to take more snaps of them..

we then started moving and we couldn't resist but stop every 10 kms to admire the nature and fall in love with the place.. It seemed as if God abandoned the place..

continuing on our journey.. we had to go past few check posts.. we were asked to give all the information about us which included our original drivers license, RC books of our bikes and they gave us a pass.. when we asked what this is about.. they said this path goes through a forest.. and we have to reach the other end (somewhere around 8-10 kms) in 20 mins time.. again, we were confused about why we were allocated time to get to the other end for which they said there are lots of smuggling of wild animals in the forest and if you don't pass the forest in that particular time, we will have to be completely checked and pay some fine.. and speed limit of 60kmph.. In between we saw wild animals which was pretty cool as we were riding in the middle of the forest on bikes and animals were crossing the roads in between..

I have a video of us riding in the forest.. Will upload it later some time..

We were asked to give details again in another check post and again we were going inside the forest.. we reached the other end of the 2nd checkpost.. we were just outside the Bardia National Park (150 Kms from Mahendra nagar).. Manoj always wanted to tent out in a national park so we asked to police guys about this and we were pushed to another guy by name Krishna.. we had a conversation with him.. and we were in a big dilemma whether to camp in the forest.. and we finally decided to stay back here over the night..

we were off the road for almost 10kms towards the cottage of Krishna..

Name of the cottage - Wild Route Tented Camp..
Address - Wild Route Tented Camp, Bardia national Park, Thankurdwara, West-Nepal.

                            Day 4 - 14th Feb 2012..

on the 13th Feb 2012.. we got help from Krishna.. on how far we can travel and where to stay the 14th Night... he suggested many places.. out of which we decided to halt at pokhara.. which is somewhere around 450 kms away from Bardia National Park.. and he suggested to skip Nepalgunj as there is nothing interested unless you want to see some strip dance or sandwich massage.. lol..

so that night.. we decided to leave as early as 7:00 AM and as usual, Manoj and Amresh woke up only at 7:00 AM and I woke up at 6AM and did all the morning chores and went out to clean up our 3 beasts..

after they woke up.. they finished the morning chores and we paid Krishna for the wonderful food and home like hospitality.. and we left at somewhere around 8:30AM..

We started off slow as the roads we were off the roads and riding on a so called road with lots and lots of stones.. I had to be more careful because of the Full fairing.. and was way behind RTR and Classic 350.. and we reached the main road at somewhere around 9AM.. we then continued on our Journey..

Problem with Amresh was he had to LOO every 1hr and whenever he stops for a loo, we take some 5 mins rest.. we stopped by to have our breakfast.. and we took almost an hour break for no reason all thanks to Amresh..

another incident.. I had a bottle tied to the saree guard with my banyan strings and somehow the bottle got loose got stuck to the alloy wheel. I never noticed till i heard a sound that almost made me think the rear tire burst.. I stopped and noticed that shitty bottle stuck.. removing it took me almost 5 mins and mean while the other 2 idiots didn't even care to look behind and they crossed almost 1kms from where i had to stop.. after removing it.. i picked up speed and reached them.. started abusing them for not stopping

we had to follow only 1 road.. through out.. we filled up the tanks at a stop and Manoj was looking out for a double side tape to tape his mobile behind the speedo of RTR.. that took almost 30 mins. and the time was somewhere around 12PM and we covered only around 100 kms and we had to cross 350 kms more.. and as it was winter.. it gets dark by 6PM.. so we had to cover 350 kms in 6 hrs.. which includes 180 kms on the mountains with complete hair pins bends..

so we decided not to stop much and avoid breaks.. and we continued.. Amresh got a call from his friend saying heavy rain towards Pokhara and it is not safe to climb up the mountains hence she suggested to stay somewhere else.. so we had a choice to stay either in Butwal or in Palpa.. a small place just 30 kms from Butwal towards Pokhara..

we decided to skip Pokhara and go to Kathmandu the next day from either Butwal or Palpa..

it was about 3PM and we were 50kms to butwal and 80 kms to Palpa and we took a tea break thinking we have enough time to reach 80kms.. we were just checking out some girls there looking at them as they looked at us :P and time passed by so fast.. it was 3:30PM already and we were asking the guys there for directions to Palpa and asked them where wil it good to stay and things..

so we started at somewhere around 3:45PM and we left that place.. we were going slowly.. and on the highways.. a P220 started racing me after seeing my Black Pearl.. till then we didn't cross 90kmph and my veins started pumping.. lol.. I picked up speed.. he assumed that I can't reach him.. i closed by him and over took him.. over took him at a speed of 110 kmph.. and while overtaking.. i saw his speedo read 124kmph.. he must have thought my ZMR is doing some 140kmph and I slowed down showing him thumbs up and gave him a knuckle shake as he passed by me.. and another guy in P150 smiled and said good race.. :P after some 15seconds.. Manoj came on his RTR chasing us.. he got scared that me and that guy in P220 were gonna end up fighting.. but I told him cheers.. and he was like I was chasing you guys.. but he ended up 15 seconds later thats the only time i lost control of my speed control and chased.. Amresh has lots of Patience and he never crossed 90 kmph.. Cool Guy

we were nearing Butwal and the police check post again.. they stopped us and asked us for the documents.. bansal (Permit to ride Indian Bikes in Nepal) we showed them and they let us go.. they enquired about our rides and our journey so far.. and they also admired Classic 350 to the core

we moved from there and we reached Butwal at 4:45PM and Manoj was on call with his wife for almost 20 mins and he went to the ATM to get some cash as we were running out of cash in hand..

Well, the Photo session was over and we saw many guys going up the hills and down the hills.. by the way.. It was valentines day so there were loads of couples going up and down.. God knows what they were doing

as we started off.. we were quite happy that we are going to reach the destination point early and we can go shopping etc etc as it was just 5:30 PM.

I took lead for some time, Manoj in middle and Amresh was holding the tail position... I was cruising up the mountains at a speed of 60kmph and I saw a couple of couples coming the opposite side on Unicorn and Stunner.. and just 10 seconds after they passed by.. I heard a heavy crash sound.. Immediate feeling was something happened to Amresh or Manoj and that worried me to the core.. I stopped my bike.. turned back and saw Manoj also stopped then looked at Amresh Sitting on his bike looking behind him seeing the couples on Stunner crash.. Amresh left his bike on the middle of the road and went to help the poor guys.. I parked my bike on the side.. Manoj did the same.. we went to those guys and saw that the bike had skidded and fell on the right side.. crushing the girls legs.. of course not a severe injury.. but for a girl yes.. it is..

Amresh.. our hero.. was pulling the girl.. Note.. without picking the bike off of her legs.. :-/ such an idiot.. I parked his RE to the side.. ran and picked up that bike.. and then pulled out the girl.. the girl got cut on her chin and big scratches on her right hand and leg.. I thought we were going to be screwed by the guys there as the Stunner hit into Amresh's silencer and the guys might have thought it was Amresh's fault.. the villagers asked us to leave so that we don't get into trouble..

we went and went and went.. and Classic 350 was hungry.. so we decided to fill up the tanks of all our bikes.. we were of course cheated at this point of time with the fuel price.. we filled up the tanks and we checked up on how far Palpa is from there.. and they said it is roughly 25kms.. and we asked them the conditions in Pokhara.. they said nothing much.. its a clear sight there.. then we continued up the mountains.. and we saw a path down the side of the mountain where water was running down.. we decided to go there for a photo shoot.. and the time now is 5:45 PM.. I went down to check if the path is clear to go down.. it was not such a good path to go down.. but took enough risk knowing my bike can make it down and make it back up without any strain.. went down.. checked the path and everything was clear.. though there was lots of stones on the way causing sudden jerks of you don't where the bike will be pushed off to..

Gave Manoj and Amresh a sign to come down.. they came down.. Manoj came down faster than Amresh.. obvious its an RTR and not heavy..

We spent about 30 minutes here talking funny pics

so we were all exhausted and we wanted to go and take rest..

Then Me and Manoj thought we can play with Amresh saying we will change the destination back to Pokhara instead of Palpa as he was too tired.. expecting he will say no..

We asked and he was like hell yeah.. lets goo..

me and Manoj were surprised at his answer and we both were ready to continue further.. and yeah.. it was already 6:15 PM.. we were almost 150kms away from Pokhara.. we didn't even care about the Weather conditions there.. we just wanted to make it

So we decided to carry on from there.. it was getting dark.. many people were going up the mountain.. we were happy that we had many others to accompany us up..

we went up and up and up.. it got dark by 6:45PM.. so we decided to turn on the head lights.. everyone coming downhill was on highbeam and we got irritated.. by the way, I had HID installed in my bike.. not the Projector.. just the HID.. so I decided to turn On the HID.. (low beam was yellow light)

Turned on the Hi Beam whenever i saw an idiot in Hi beam on the opposite side..

well.. we were going up and up and the time was 7:30 PM.. we crossed only 3 trucks in total till now.. and as we went up higher and higher.. no one was on the roads.. that frightened us a bit.. and we stopped for tea break.. stopped our bikes on the side and it was completely dark.. just few houses with lights on.. and other houses had no lights.. the tea store too didn't have lights on.. but they were serving tea..

while waiting for the tea to be prepared.. the 3 trucks that we crossed passed by us.. and after that no other vehicle.. Against scared to the core..

we started off from there and we were somewhere around 110kms away and the time is already 7:45 PM.. we started off with the night venture without knowing the effects of what is gonna happen.. lol..

we went up and up and up.. time is 8:15 PM and this time.. my bike started feeling heavy.. as if something is pulling the bike back or something heavy is sitting on my back.. scared the shit out of me.. i didn't want to turn around and see due to some old sayings regarding ghosts slapping you if you turn around when you feel something heavy.. I didn't tell Manoj or Amresh about this as I didn't want them to get scared too..

i kept praying to Lord asking him to protect us throughout.. kept saying "Jesus Save us" "Jesus Be with us".. Terrified.. time was 9:30 PM and we stopped in a small dhaba for dinner..

Informed Manoj that my bike tire seems to be tight at the rear and he sat down to check and he fell down.. thats how much tired he was.. we checked the chain if its tight or loose.. it was pretty decent.. and we were still not sure why the tire is tight..

we had our dinner.. me and Amresh ordered for Chicken Fry.. by the way.. Manoj is a Veg and he loves to comment on me and Amresh when we eat chicken.. :P

so while having our dinner.. manoj had a word with a driver nearby and asked him how far is Pokhara from there and he said it is about 90kms.. we were riding slow due to the hair pin bends in every curve.. we could not go beyond 40kmph..

so the Driver started asking information about us and manoj to be on safer side gave him fake details.. the driver suggested that we travel in the day as anyone can stop us in between and loot us.. or what will we do if our tires get punctured in between.. valid point but we had all the equipment we needed..

so we decided not to listen to that guy and move further..

We came out of the dhabba..

Inserted the Key and turned on the ignition.. Held the clutch and pressed the self start switch.. the speedo went blank and came back to life once i left the self button.. then I pressed again.. same happened.. I was terrified.. battery was completely dry as i was using HID throughout.. the others started and moved ahead without noticing i am missing.. i honked.. Manoj stopped and turned back.. he asked what happened.. I said battery is dead.. and I need to push the bike to start.. I turned the bike around.. applied the clutch.. put the bike in second gear and let the bike move under gravity down hill.. left the clutch and the bike started.. gave as much acceleration as I could and turned on only the Pilot SMD lights on..

We continued on our journey.. I was frightened as I was still holding the tail position as if I was a HERO.. lol.. we couldn't think of anything else that night but think about reaching Pokhara which is some 90 kms away with all the hair pin bends..

Amresh was on lead.. we crossed some 20 kms.. and we started noticing strange things on the road.. dead cats, animals, lemons all along which frightened us to the core. but no one said it to each other so that we don't scare the other person out.. my bike still felt heavy..

                              A mistake my Amresh -

He was leading throughout and a small mistake he made almost costed the life of the 3 of us..

we started moving at a faster pace and started hitting 50-60 kmph and Amresh instead of turning right on the curve.. he went a ahead which seeemed like a road.. since we were following him.. we were going behind him.. and suddenly he applied sudden brakes and there was a big wall in front of him.. he would have crashed into it.. then Manoj and then me.. without the headlights..

we stopped for awhile.. i didn't turn off the ignition of my bike as I didn't wanna push start the bike again..

Amresh went to Loo and then manoj followed him.. then I followed.. while looing.. i didn't notice my gloves fell into the ditch there where we were looing.. yuck.. but I needed the gloves so i picked it up.. tied it over the saree guard and let it dry.. out of fear.. we said to ourselves.. this is a foolish decision made by the 3 of us.. just when we were about to move.. me and Amresh for no reason got into a conflict.. not sure what happened to us.. he has lots of patience and me.. no where near patience..

then we moved along and the time was 11:55 PM and we were just 25-30kms away from Pokhara.. we were soo tired.. exhausted.. waiting to reach Pokhara.. and we were really terrified after all the incidents.. and yet.. my bike is still feeling heavy.. it was fine for quite few distance when we start from halt.. and then it feels heavy again..

It was 12:30 AM and we finally reached Pokhara.. we saw cops and we were so excited and happy that we met people after almost 3 hrs.. we asked them for a hotel to stay in and they guided us to a place.. we went and checked.. they were full.. again exhausted.. we couldn't move any further.. I was waiting outside all alone when Manoj and Amresh went inside to check on the availability of rooms..

Just when manoj and Amresh came out of the hotel without any luck.. 3 guys came on an Avenger 180 and asked us if we wanted rooms to stay.. we didn't want to trust them.. but we had no other choice but to follow them... I had my left glove on in case we needed to punch them.. Pro Biker Gloves would help.. they took us to a pretty nice place.. Manoj and Amresh went inside to check out the rooms.. after almost 15 minutes.. they came out.. we were in contact with the PTP walkie Talkies

All was good.. we went up to the room.. with 3 beds.. first thing I did was.. take my gloves and put it for wash..

Then we went to the bed and we spoke about everything we felt that night.. everyone had the same issues except the heavy feeling of the bike.. the lemons, dead animals, cats.. one thing they noticed.. which I didn't was a dead body lying on the side of the road.. since I didn't keep my head lights turned on.. I probably didn't notice it..

We were frightened to the core.. we had the goosebumps everytime we think about that decision to ride all the way to pokhara in the evening before Palpa...

Will continue the next day adventure in the next post
