  • [Photo Feature]: 837.4 kms and 16 hour Solo Ride to Yercaud

Hey guys my name is Sai Sandeep and i am currently pursuing my B.tech Automobile Engineering in SRM University. My introduction to proper biking began in May 2012 when i got my first bike a Tri-colour Honda CBR 250r. Though i had made a lot of rides both solo and group in the past 10 months this was going to be the farthest yet .

It all started with my college going on strike after spending one day at home that is all i could take. So that evening i silently tanked up my bike, checked the coolant and oil levels. The next day 20/03/13 i woke up at 3 A.M. and got ready hastily by around 4 and was on my way.

I decided to take the ECR road to get to my first stop Pondycherry, it was my dream for some time to ride to Pondycherry and have Coffee at the beach side restaurant Le Cafe on Goubert Avenue watching the Sunrise over the ocean and i was there by around 6.30 A.M and although it was a bit late the sun was still just rising up over the horizon and after having coffee and a small walk on the beach i left as i still had a long way to go.

The next stop was at Cuddalore where my only area of interest was the Silver Beach. I headed to it and found it quite deserted except for a few localites taking a walk on the beach. I wasnt sure if i should just leave my bike especially after it stirred some attention from some locals who thought i was a street racer and a cop who started asking all kind of questions not wanting any trouble so i hastily took a pic of the bike and left quickly.

Since i did not have GPS on my phone i was forced to rely on locals for directions and after some wrong guidance i ended up going down the wrong road towards Chidambaram and after some distance and more local guidance i was back on track and finally on four lane NH and i decided to let the CBR loose and was happily cruising at 120 kmph .

It was around 11 by the time i reached salem and after a quick tour of Salem on bike i started the climb towards Yercaud. At the first turn i read 1/20 Hair Pin bend and i was happy to see it but i remembered that this road was not one way and decided to take it easy on the turns nevertheless it was fun to corner.

By noon i was atop yercaud and the climate was quite pleasant compared to scorching heat of Salem. I decided to ride and explore a little and after chatting with some vendors i came to know the list of places to be visited and the first on the list was Pagoda Point which was an view point 4kms from Yercaud.

Then the other attractions included killayiur falls which was dried up and some rock formations and in the center of the town was the famous yercaud lake and it was mid-noon so i was lazy to park and walk up to the lake so i circled around to the back where there was some construction going on so i took the opportunity to ride inside to the lake

I visited a few more places which included a not so special botanical garden and Montfort school and by now it was nearing 3 and i realised there is not much to see and since i also had to get back i decided to leave back.

I began the decent and since the gradient was steep enough i decided to glide down without switching on the bike and it was nice to hit 80kmph without even switching on the bike . It was a different route which i had taken down so now i was 30kms away from salem and there was a board directing me to chennai, little did i know that it would guide me through state highways and a lot of small towns. Although it was the right route the traffic was heavy and i couldnt keep the average speed up and it was the same situation throughout as i went through Harur, Tirupattur and Jolarpettai. As i pushed on i saw a board which directed me to Elagiri it was just 20 km diversion but it included a hill climb and it was already close to 5.30 and i had previously visited it so i kept going and i reached Vaniymbadi from where i was back to four lane NH which was actually Bangalore-Chennai Road. I could finally make up some lost time but even the NH was under six-laning work so it had a lot of diversions and i spotted a CCD and decided to take a small coffee break.

After this it was darker so i decided to restrict the speed to 100 kmph and it took 2 hours more to reach Chennai. By the time i parked the bike in front of my house it was 8.00 P.M and i was completely tired and i could barely lift my arm and the trip-meter read 837.4 kms. The bike returned an average of 27 kmpl on the average and all i had in my mind is how much farther can i take it!

A good crispy day ride, reminds me of one which I did for lunch (Biriyani) in Vaniyambadi also to complete my new zma's runin. But Sai, atleast from what I have heard, it is not a good idea to roll the bike with engine switched off. That too for speeds of 80kmph which I would think twice before doing so! would never though! Cheers buddy.

          Hi Sai,

Welcome to xBhp. Congrats on a long ride. Nice crisp travelogue. Keep riding and ride safe

PS: Please do not turn off the engine or do not put bike on neutral while riding down a hill or a steep.

It all depends upon the speed and condition of the bike and my bike gave me 27 kmpl on what i would say was a mixture of high speed (120-130 kmph) straights, hill climb and congested state highways. So, definitely it has had its effect on the mileage in city normally i get 28-30 and on highways under sedate (85 -110 kmph)driving anywhere from 33 - 38 kmpl.

@vivekarizma and @experimentalhead Thanks a lot for the advice will keep in mind the next time i ride. I really wanted to feel how riding silent would be. Guess i burnt the brakes out in hairpin bends :-p

Hello Sai, I also had done a solo trip last sunday but only, 467Km, Chennai - Elagiri - Chennai. To coast down a hill without switching on the engine is not a good idea IMHO. You can't use engine braking to slow down also. And if your bike is having ABS, it won't work either.

I also got a similar mileage 29 odd Kmpl.
