Thank you so much my friend !! I think Odisha has everything that a tourist can expect for. From the longest man made dam in Sambalpur to the holy city of Puri. From the wetlands of Bhitarkanika inhibiting the largest reptiles to the largest water lagoon, Chilika. From the world famous Ratha Yatra to the recently popular surfing at the shores near Puri. From the famous Odisi dance form to the brilliant architecture of Konark. In short, Scenic Serene Sublime, The Soul of Incredible India!!Originally posted by ahota View PostOne of the most engrossing Tourer tales I have had the opportunity to go through. Really enjoying the narration till now.
Eagerly waiting for the rest of the details from you as I am from Odisha also.

Re: Experience of lifetime... a Ride to remember !!
Day 7 Sambalpur to Kapilash(Dhenkanal)
21st March 2013
Another morning that begun at 6:00 am.
By 7:00 I was all set and left for world’s longest man made dam, The Hirakud Dam. It was built in 1957 across the Mahanadi River. The dam construction begun in 1946 and though got completed in 1953 it was formally inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawarlal Nehru on 13th January 1957. The total cost of the project is approximated to a little more than Rs. 100 crores in those times.
The dam was 19 kms from my stay at Sambalpur. The road leading to the dam was not in proper shape, single lane with a lots of pot holes. I even crossed the railway crossing twice to reach there. As I was about to reach there was a steep climb. And there it was!! Really looked huge!! But unfortunately this view I won’t be able to share as photography was prohibited at the place. The place was surrounded by hill on one side and the river Mahanadi on the other. The dam office was just below the hill and overlooking the stretch of the dam opposite it. I parked my bike beside the office. There was a huge gateway that was built at the starting point of the dam made of rock with typical Odisha architecture with the Konark wheel on top as the crown of the structure. Looking at this I felt that yes I am in Odisha. Behind this structure was the gate and check post that opened to that long stretch of smooth tarmac road which ran on top of the dam to the other side of the river. The road was secured with brick wall which was painted in red, some 4 feet high, on both sides. These walls were joined with cubical pillars painted in yellow which were placed to break the continuity of those walls at every 20 feet or so.
On one of the side of this long structure was the mighty Mahanadi River which looked as mighty as it could get and on the other side was the free flowing river in a structured manner with its ego checked by the courageous Hirakud Dam. The vigorous and mighty river is allowed to pass through the 42 small lower gates and the 21 top gates of the strong Hirakud Dam calming it down to make it a boon and not bane for the numerous villages and citied of Odisha.

By 9:00 am I was back in Sambalpur city and crossed it to reach Huma temple another 25 kms from the city to the other route from the one I was going to take for Kapilash. The roads were a lot better than the one in the morning towards Hirakud dam. Nice two lane village road with trees both side. The temple is the only leaning temple in the world. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is built near the Mahanadi River.
After spending a little time there went back to the hotel at Sambalpur and by 12:00 am checked out from there. And the journey began towards Dhenkanal and finally reached Kapilash by 6:30. My stay was just near the Temple which was around 9 kms from there. The place was right in the middle of the jungle and soon it became quite dark. I was the only tourist around staying at a place where not even another building was there apart from this particular OTDC run Panthshala.
How beautiful and serene way to end today's journey!!

Just saw all the pics - very nice! Keep clickin' & keep ridin'.
Once I have donned my black helmet, I become anonymous. My face ceases to identify me. My black visor shields others from the rigours of my passing glance while shielding me from their attempts to peer into my soul. I am an anonymous rider shrouded in black. I am no longer a specific self. I am a passing Traveller.

It was indeed a lifetime experience and don't think I will even think of doing such thing again.
Thanks my friend !! chaosaddict Sambalpur was a nice place. Placed near the river Mahanadi it has very scenic river sides. The Hirakud dam is world known and there are a few temples situated by the banks of Mahanadi river. I would suggest the Panthnivas, run by the OTDC and leave all the concerns about the stay, safety and cost. The hotel is right in the middle of the city and has a big spacious rooms with nice view from the balcony.Originally posted by chaosaddict View PostOnce again, mesmerizing photos! the detailing is perfect.
