  • [Photo Feature]: Nothing Much: A short ride of 2457 kms in South

    Hi all,

Would like to take this opportunity of my last 4 day trip starting from Mangalore.
    Riders: myself and Siddharth
    Bike: Royal Enfield Thunderbird 2011
Odo reading: Close to 48000 km
Actual kms munched in the same bike: 62000 km

We had four days in hand starting from Friday.
We have loaded the bike by 2 am and planned to start by 2:30 am from Mangalore. We had information of Shiradi ghat closure due to heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides and hence, we preferred to take the Charmadi ghat route from Mangalore. After 22 kms of awesomeness in B.C. Road, we took a left diversion towards Chikmagalur. It was a great ride in the middle of mist, raindrops, fresh air and nature.

Remembered the line: Fresh air is an air freshner.

Stopped at Charmadi Ghat for enjoying the early morning sunrise

    My ride:

Lost in the music of the mother nature:

    It cleared soon

    View it to believe it

    Yours truly:

Stopped at Kotigere for a quick tea break:

And just after that, I got a flat tyre. I was cruising at 60 kmph and this sudden incident was unexpected. But, as I always carry an extra saddle bag for spares, it came into help.

Myself removing tire, the locals were helpful enough to extend their help, though I managed myself:

    Naked bull:

It was a sharp nail that made my day. Did the needful patchwork myself and was done by another 45 minutes.

The next stop was in Belur to enjoy the beautiful Belur temple

We reached Hassan at afternoon and after that it was a 4 lane awesomeness.

Bypassed Bangalore to reach the Hosur road. Did a quick check up in the Hosur road service station. They refused to take a single buck.
    Near Dharmapuri:

Moved forward till Velur, Tamilnadu and got a descent hotel at 400 bucks.

Trip meter for the day: 777 km

Great pictures and ride mate. I am sure you guys enjoyed a lot.

P.S. Though this is not a SaddleSore, would request you to highlight the difficulties and hurdles you faced and respective measures you took throughout drive and what you did here.

Re: Nothing Much: A short ride of 2457 kms in South

Thanks all for the lovely words and encouragements.

Few words on the rides: I classify my rides as Local, Short, Long and very long rides depending on the number of days and places covered.
Recently, few of my very close buddies have done all India trip and K2K rides (atleast close to 40 of them together) which I could not join due to my professional committments. And after closely following my inspiration Mr. Bharadwaj Dayala for sometime, I must say that World touring is someting we should aspire for, to know oneself and to know the mother Earth. Hence, I am classifying this ride as a small ride, as the hunger for more miles is preventing me to do so.

Regarding the blog that Aargee has posted for endurance rides and saddlesore, I will definitely post details over there. Right now those details are availiable in my Facebook profile which I shall put it over here too. But, I am sure that those who has completed the endurance ride will be in a better position to guide for a Saddlesore than me, whose personal best is just a 1183 km ride from Kanyakumari to Mangalore via Bangalore.

Wish you all a lovely time. I shall come back soon.

Day 2: Good Road, nice food, great views and friends

We started early in the morning at around 4:30 am. We started from Velur. The previous night, I had one of the best Dosas in my life and some great chicken stuff. No matter I have spent quite a few years in South and started admiring foods across places in India, thanks to my bike rides. And I love TN food.

Coming back to the ride planning part, I am guided by the human GPS H V Kumar Sir. Any trip I do, be rest assured that it has been modified and fine-tuned to its best by HVK. I don't say thanks to him now a days. Too small and too common a word but he is my Gurudev.

My other guru, Major Venugopal was consistently following my movements and as per his suggestion, we planned to stop at Madurai for breakfast. He has already informed Jyothi, a friend, a member of Madras Bulls and a crazy biker to host us over there at breakfast. Velur to Madurai was 175km in my odometer.

I stopped after 1 hour of starting the journey. Have covered 83 odd kms.

                On the way

                She kept cruising:

                Landscapes

We stopped in Madurai for good 2.5 hours for food. Jyothi was waiting for us near the coca-cola bottling plant after the check post.
Awesome food we had in breakfast. A quick detour the city and then we exited the city in the traffic and two lanes toward Rameswaram.

We reached to Rameshwaram by afternoon. Brief visit to here and there. Nothing much. No Dhanuskodi. Did it earlier in 2010. Will do it again soon.

My Pillion Siddharth. It was his first trip above 300 km. He was facing issues as faced by first timers. He did adjust. And he did book a Royal Enfield just after the ride.

                Few note here:
It might be helpful for all those who are for the first time on 4 lanes or GQ. What I have seen from Sid's style of riding (for a stretch of 10 km) we normally don't give signals while changing lanes. We don't bother the truck who is just behind you assuming that it will stop for you. DON'T.

Show signal at every point while changing lanes/overtaking. Still, just look back for a while to check if someone is at your blind spot. Honk if required. And respect TRUCKs. They are your best friends forever on Indian roads. They will guide you if there is an elephant crossing ahead. They will cook food for you in the night. They will offer you shelter if required or help you towing your bike if required (yes, I ride a Royal Enfield which is 2.1 years and above 60000km old and hence I need to consider that). Please be nice to trucks and they will be nice to you too.

The night halt for the day was scheduled to be at Kumbakonam. We took ECR and took diversion to Thanjavur before Thondi. Nothing much but one of the best roads we have ever driven.

                Butt breaks. Well deserved.

                My fully loaded bike:

                Halted in this nice place:

The nice view at the top:

                Pallathur:

At Thanjavur. Marked it in my wishlist to be there for two days for photoshot.

Reached Kumbakonam admist heavy rain at 7:30 PM.
                Total Kms clocked: 710 km
                Day1+ Day2: 1487 km

Madras Bull 11 Anniversary party was waiting for us. It was at Indecco Hotel, Swamimalai. Will update the same in the next update.

Please let me know how did you like the journey so far. Any suggestions? Please PM me.

Day 3: In and around Swamimalai and Kumbakonam

AFter an amazing night spend in the place, we all had a lazy time in the morning. Woke up late and spent time in roaming in and around Swamimalai and Kumbakonam.

Some picture from the parking lot.

One of those who inspires me. I loved the spirit of this great man, who rode all the way in spite of his age and health issues. Hats off sir.

We started heading in the afternoon towards Satyamangalam via Karur.

We called it a day at a place called Gobi. Cheap accommodation of 150 bucks per room. Had some great food.
