Absolutely fantastic Suvra, the experience must've been thrilling on those beautiful roads... never been to Rameshwaram side and this tlog is upping the ante for it. More more more...

Also that RE stand sinking into the road tells me that the road isn't compacted well by a roller... rains, non-rubber bullock cart wheels and heavy vehicles will damage it sooner than normal. Fu*k that, the mountains and that traditional double laner after Madurai looks so damn inviting... surrounded by green mountains... Lovely stuff.. Waiting for more.

Day Three: Dhanushkodi: The Lost World

The big day had arrived of which we were waiting for We had set our alarm for 06:00 AM in the morning as we got to know from a hotel manager that Dhanushkodi transport opens for public at 07:00 AM and honestly we wanted to be among the first people to reach there and explore the town and its surroundings. So, everyone woke up sharp at 06:00 AM and got ready as fast as we can and we were all set to start for the short but exciting trip to Dhanushkodi.

The moment we set our foot out of the hotel room, our mood went off. So humid was the climate along with bright and strong sun . Anyways, we ignored our mood and reached our steeds, cleaned them up and we accelerated towards the Lost World. A picture of the motorcycles in front of our hotel in the morning

Anways, the next couple of pictures are the ones of the road till Dhanushkodi. It is pretty much a good quality tar road with seas (visible only at few places) and sand dunes on both the sides. There goes the pictures.

While on the way to Dhanushkodi, we found a diversion on the left which goes to a Rama temple. Though we did not visit the temple, but we were all drooling by seeing the road so we stopped over to click couple of pictures. It is being said that once upon a time in the near past, on both sides of the road in the pictures below, there was sea, which is true to my belief. This was another amazing place and trust me the pictures do not do justice to this place as well!

After the mini stop, we continued on our way to Dhanushkodi. Couple of kms ahead, we stopped to see this breathtaking view.

That was the Indian Ocean to our right and there was heavy sand storm going on at that time . Managed to take couple of shots though. The ocean looked so furious at this time and the colour was all blue. Bad that we could not stand the storm and we were able to stay there only for couple of minutes!

1 km from this place and we ended up to the parking lot of Dhanushkodi. This place was full of tourists! Even at 07:00 AM in the morning . There was an Indian Navy checkpost as well. Some snaps of the place.

We started up enquiring about how to go to the town from here and how far it is from the parking lot. We got all negative feedback when asked if motorcycles can go. Almost everyone said that the route to Dhanushkodi is very challenging and there is 80% chance that we can get lost. Also, some of the path is submerged in the water so the motorcycles would not be able to pass through. Sadly, and having no other choice, we parked our motorcycles and looked for trucks (maxi cabs) which was ready to start from that place to Dhanushkodi. We found one truck which was almost full and it was all ready to go. We three jumped on it, paid 100/- per head and pointed out cameras outside the window to click pictures. What comes next is shown through pictures. I would not talk much now because I am sure the pictures are all self explanatory and they would say more and better than me. Only thing I would like to say that after a bumpy ride of about 20 minutes, we ended up at the tip of Indian soil (on one side was the calm Bay of Bengal and the other side was the furious Indian Ocean). There was a small strip of land in the middle which led to the sangam of these two water bodies. It is my sheer pride to visit this place and been to that last inch of land. Here goes the pictures.

            The ride

Here is the video which we have taken when the truck takes us through to the tip just by the Bay of Bengal. The water is really calm and blue. The video is jerky and the quality is not HD (the other camera was not of good clarity ). But this gives you an idea how the ride was till the tip.

More pictures carried over to the next post...

It was terrible of the truck guy that he did not give more than 10 minutes to stay at this magical place . We all wanted to spend like half a day here and admire this beauty. But anyways, maybe next time . We moved back on the same route where we came from, this time to the lost world of Dhanushkodi. The truck took a diversion towards the left, towards the Indian Ocean and from amongst the bushes, came out the all smashed village. It looked like a ghost town to me indeed! All ruins, spread over a long beach. Sand storm was in full flow here but this time we used the ruins to take shed and in this way, we were able to spend some considerable amount of time exploring this small but beautiful and devastated village. This time the truck guy gave us 30 minutes to loiter around the village though.

We explored the place a bit more. There was no sign of life on this part of the world. Cursed cyclone it was in 1964 when the entire village was shattered. Spending some silence minutes, remembering those cursed souls, we left the land with heavy heart.

A ride of another 10 minutes took us back to the parking lot from where we started. This place has the Indian Ocean on its side and it was time for us to spend some time here. We did not feel like going back, although the sun was glowing strongly on our head and we were getting sweat to the core , a bit of tiredness alongside it. We still decided to stay at the beach for some time and enjoy the big waves here. Few clicks here

After spending another half an hour of quality time on this marvellous beach, it was time for us to move back to the city. The ride back was slow, and we were enjoying the view overall, and I was observing the lost world of Dhanushkodi fading out in my rear view mirror . Some other day maybe.

We headed back to our hotel, got freshened up again, had a heavy lunch this time because we were feeling tired by the heat and we had no more big plans for the day but to visit the Rameshwaram temple and the beach. Some of us took a small nap after the lunch though. And then we took our steeds out again, this time to explore Rameshwaram.

More pictures and log of Day 3 in the next post..

                ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

There is not much to see in Rameshwaram actually. There are couple of temples along with the famous Rameshwaram temple. The magnificent beach was one place we really enjoyed spending time at. It was already afternoon and the sun was nearing its horizon. We asked couple of local people about the places of interest in the city and we started off for each one of them. We hit the beach first though and I ended up clicking few pictures out here

We had the best day of the journey. And it was time to roll under the bedsheet and take some much needed rest because tomorrow is going to be another big day for us. Wrapping up couple of more places in Rameshwaram and then scoot towards Bengaluru.

Day 4 log to be updated soon...
