Re: To the eastern coast & southern tip of India, 2.5k kms on patina

We planned to woke up early morning and then a quick roam around kanyakumari and then way towards vellore ..

But somehow no plan worked in most of my trips , applicable to here also .

We woke up at 8am freshened up and went towards the last tip of india , though we had a plan to visit Vivekanada rock but we found ferry service didn't start so enjoyed the sea visually and took some pics and started riding towards cholachel ..

    View from kanyakumari

    there

    another shot

where I parked my bike , Mainak da clicking pics

    vivekananda rocks from there

    boats were resting

    some were ready to sail

Then we started cruising towards western coast , plan was to reach cholachel and take the route back and then to vellore .
    But again plan didn't work

the first view of western coast

while on the way towards cholachel

the coastal route , we were near to the sea only , but because of lots of coconut plantation it was invisible

    me there

    mainak da there , posing

    backwater & western ghat

    another

    on the way

    another shot on the way

    road side snap

    thats visible

    while crossing the backwater

    enjoyed the nature

    western coast

    way towards

    again

    roads were nice only

    backwater ,road ,sea

    weather was also lovely

    and we reached cholachel

    from the jetty

    too windy

    another shot

    p125 taking rest

    she liked it

sea waves were splashing water even that were coming to our face

wish I could ride there also

and we bid good bye and started the bike towards nagercoil , but suddenly Mainak da said :if we go straight we will reach Trivandrum & kovalam beach as per the GPS.
Then what , we took the turn and again started riding somewhat faster towards trivandrum , reached there directly to the kovalam beach but because of using GPS mobile ph lost its battery and we could not take any pics there , has cold drinks and again we started riding back towards nagercoil , reached nagercoil and we lost our way in the city :P
GPS was not working , it was in charging , switched on GPS and we were on the NH..
But we lost nearly 45mins inside nagercoil city

After being on highway we stopped a highway restaurant took our lunch , took a much needed rest and given my bike a well deserved rest ..

After that we started cruising in my own pace at 90+kmph all the way , mostly we had to stop for a lots of time because of some important calls for Mainak da and we lost some precious time

Cities were crossing like movies , we stopped once for filling petrol near madurai and mostly rode non-stop ..

Actually when we started from Trivandrum our expressions were WTH , can we reach vellore today ??????

Near salem we again found rain , and that also very hard .
We took shelter in a bus-stand , mainak da wore the torn rain cote and we started cruising in little slow speed with all the lights on , it was nearly night 8pm (can't remember properly).

    An incident to remember ..
While it was raining cats & dogs and all the vehicles were following each-other , mostly trucks on left lane , cars & my bike on right lane ..
I switched n the hazard light and in my RVM I could all the cars were switching on their hazard light just after watching the front vehicle , all happened in a rhythm..
Nearly after 50kms rain became less and other car started increasing their speed and I was came back to my cruising speed ..
We crossed salem , near manipal hospital there is dhaba , we stopped there even while coming back from valparai , so we stopped there for our dinner , took a much needed rest and again started cruising towards vellore and it was nearly 240kms another run ..
We stopped in krishnagiri for nature's call and again cruising straight to our hostel in vellore ..

After reaching hostel we were so glad that we completed that much distance ..
In the meantime My bike clocked 33,333kms on odo (though its wrong , it was showing nearly 5,400kms less because of cable snatch issue)..

But after reaching vellore my bike started giving a wired lathe kind of sound which was actually failure of crank-shaft bearings and that happened because I always cruised nearly top speed of my bike for too long distance with so much weight ..
We solved that issue in another 1 weeks and at present my bike is nearly 50k+ kms done , no probs still now , still using the stock cylinder + pistons , just the piston rings I changed as we opened the engine ..

Lots of more kms to go , lots of places to visit ..

My road of life still continues .........................

        Great ride and pictures.

However, I can't help being astonished at your lack of concern for the environment and the responsibility that you as a biker needs to follow and encourage, by setting the right examples. Why on earth would you want to change your oil in Dhanushkodi when you could have easily done it in town on your return or before you left? You have crowned your dubious actions by actually posting a picture here and I thank you for that.

I wonder what will be the state of the beach there if every biker who visits Dhanushkodi decides that the 'boats are much bigger polluters' and decides to drain his used engine oil directly into the sand.

Sorry if your feelings are hurt, but this just had to be said and I hope you will think twice the next time around.

Haha, sirjee even if I changed the oil in city where would have gone that old engine oil??
May be I could have given to a mechanic then??
They will also dump all the oil into the river or sea only ..
As per my local mechanics (from vellore,TN) they dump the those oil into the palar river ..
Very little amount of those are being used in construction sites and lathes ..
Thats why all the 36lts of engine oil bottles are in my room occupying lots of place in my hostel room,I have not given to the mechanic (what about that? ) ..
So before criticizing please let us know what to do with those oils??

By the way I post what I do, thank god I have posted a the pic , hopefully you can give us the solution
          Keep riding ...

Re: To the eastern coast & southern tip of India, 2.5k kms on patina

Whenever I read your T'logs I remember my good old days during School and college when me and my friend used to tour a lot on his Splendour. I grew up in Coimbatore and the city being blessed in the right location, every direction we take it used to take us to nice different locations every time. The best being Ooty where we used to even go for just a cup of coffee! There were days we used a Kinetic Honda too! You rekindle those memories with your T'logs. It's much appreciated!

I used to do all my rides those days without a proper riding gear and after a couple of permanent tattoos on my arms and near fatal accidents (a good sturdy helmet saved me) I have realized the importance of a good riding gear and a snug fit helmet (loose helmets are as good as not wearing one). Take it as a brotherly advice and since you are doing good numbers on a single day it is better you start wearing good riding gears. Looking forward to seeing you munch more safe miles!
Young riders pick a destination and go, Old riders pick a direction and go !

Why do you assume the mechanics in Rameshwaram or Mandapam will dump the oil into the sea?

Being an engineer from VIT and a Biomedical engineer at that, you should know that the 36L of oil sitting in your hostel room will be happily taken for free off your hands by the right people. Especially since it is in a large quantity. Its a good thing that you didn't add your 36L into the Palar river as well.

If you don't know what else to do, then you should at least ensure that the used oil goes into the container in which you bought the new oil and then disposed in a trash can where the raddi wala will recycle it for you by selling it to someone who needs it. At the very least, the oil is contained and not directly polluting the poor earth.

I happen to give my oil to the nearby mechanic who pours it into a drum, which is then bought from him at his doorstep. For your sake, I shall ask the guy who collects trash from the neighbourhood what he would do if I were to dump bottles of used motorcycle oil into the trash.

Please do let me know , as I have searched a lot for putting those into good hands but all went to vain
Yea, being an engineering student I could not let those 36lts mix with palar river water , but could no put them into those mechs hand who will again do the same :P :P

Why don't you start a campaign about these problem,I am quite sure lots of people are not having proper information about recycling ..

Happy to start a campaign with a reformed you spearheading the movement to save the Palar river from unscrupulous, lazy mechanics who dump oil into it!

On a serious note, XBHP could consider taking up this cause at a nationwide level and educate its members and the public on the environmental pollution that can be prevented or alleviated. Perhaps oil banks can be created. Ideally, Fuel stations should have collection centers for used automobile oil. It certainly has a value:

I just spoke with a automobile workshop owner who is friend; there is demand for used oil (in bulk). It sells at about Rs. 7000 for a 205 liter barrel. That is almost Rs. 35 a liter!

@hhsplendor, that would make the 36L you have stored worth Rs. 612 at half the selling cost, good for at least 3 oil changes.
