  • [Photo Feature]: Meandering the Western Ghats (Karnataka, India)

It all started with the Bangalore xBhp group inviting me for a small sunrise ride to Jayamangali Blackbuck Reserve .

I couldn't really make it all the way due to work but accompanied them till Madhugiri.

The Sunrise was absolutely breathtaking, stopping to invite it is worth riding for.

Its colours and warmth waking my senses. I remember the whole lot of us being captured and hastily capturing the fleeting moments in response.

Wouldn't be complete without a tribute shot of the sunrise with our rides, the machines that makes our collective hearts go beating .

The sunrise also meant I had to head back to Tumkur side for some work before I head back into Bangalore for the rest of the day.

Thereafter bidding farewell to friends I headed west towards Bangalore - Tumkur Rd. It also hit me here that I was riding NH 234, the same road that eventually reaches Mangalore after going through Charmadi Ghat and its twisties. I knew several guys who had been there recently and come back completely thrilled and awed with the riding experience.

Upon reaching Sira, I got a call confirming my client's unavailability and hence began my escapade on Route 234 to begin with.

The road from Madhugiri all the way to Banawara was under construction and I had the day's first offroading session so to say... But right after that the road turned into this gorgeous tarmac of a surface... a surface where cornering just comes naturally. Closing in on the Western Ghats also comes with its perks of scenic extravaganzas and it had begun with the approaching of massive green lush trees beside the road.

This is element to riding. A cuppa hot roadside tea sitting in the shade with the sound of an odd occasional truck slowly rolling past. This had already made my day.

What came after only thrilled me to bits... beautifully sculpted lush green mountains with clouds playing hide and seek, the subtlety in the shades of green merged with the red of approaching spring could enamor almost anyone. Paradise.

I spent the evening relaxing under a tree beside the inundated delta area of a river on my way to Mangalore... I could smell the faint redolence of the sea with the winds picking up.

Spent the night over at Mangalore... Went all the way into town just enjoying the city and its energy around dinner time.

The next day I woke up with a determination to do a different route back to Bangalore and kicked off without much ado, i'd already extended an impromptu trip by one day.

                    DAY 2

Day 2, I found myself yearning to get back on the tar and did just that without much ado. One thing about me when I solo, is the fact that I get this irresistible urge to try a different route, so like always before my mind could fathom what roads I was taking, my soul propelled me to NH 13 (Mangalore - Thirthalli - Shimoga Rd). The shot above is proof of this remarkable road... Much like Charmadi Ghat, this one is smooth and dangerously curvy.

Break for breakfast, at the onset of the Kudremukh Mountain ranges. Fresh Dosas with spectacular views confusing and urging my mind to take a deviation towards Kudremukh National Park.

By now I had more or less decided to get into the Kudremukh National Park, its a subtle deviation to the right on NH 13 between 'Karkala' and 'Sringeri'... This was a chai stop at the gate of Kudremukh National Park. Yup... I take a lot of chai breaks... need to soak up the atmosphere... no point in shooting past life on two wheels, need to savour and devour moments... often with the much needed spot of roadside Indian chai.

Inside the National Park, the road surface quality is 50-50... Half of it is absolutely spectacular and the way the road curves itself through the terrain is actually mesmerizing, would do it again n again. The other half is broken, potholed road sometimes getting really bad. I like the whole package and enjoyed every bit of riding through here.

There is also a very strict time limit that is followed here in Kudremukh NP. Entry times are noted and ticketed, upon exit of the NP the tickets are checked. If you've taken more than 30 mins to cross the NP, you'll be penalized. There is a no stopping, no detouring policy in place here. Here i've completely lost that plot, slowly waltzing my way through the park. Helmets off to Eco - Riders in the pic.

The road almost always hugs a stream out here, bird watchers are bound to have plenty to photograph. And the locales just make you want to stop and dip your feet in cool clear water while chucking pebbles inside.

Finally out of the National Park and into Tea Estate territory, by the looks of it I could make out I was in Chikmagalur District (This is between Kalasa and Mudigere). Patchy kind of road but okay on two wheels... The clean lines of tea estates and crisp air was keeping me in high spirits, the road gets lonely and nicely isolated at times with just the occasional estate jeep rattling past where you stand... loved it.

At Mudigere, I again choose to follow my heart and head south towards Sakleshpur. The road gets incredibly thin with state buses sometimes running vehicles off the road in the opposite direction. And at Sakleshpur I yet again followed the thinner road down south going towards Coorg.

...finally the shade that made 'cheds' ... this puncture led to a flat at about 9 pm about 8 kms short of Bylakuppe. Half walking and half riding I made it to a Petrol Station at about 10:45pm just before closing time on a Sunday.

A definite tribute shot to the Petrol Station guys who against all odds called and found a tubeless tyre repair mechanic, coaxed him to open his shutters, repair the puncture and run the motor for air at midnight... I mean these guys who were almost closing up at 10:45pm remained open and kept me company till 12:15am apart from helping me out with the puncture mech. Frankly, it is for these very fond moments that I ride or travel for... The friendship and bonding between people unknown reminds me that life still has goodness for people open enough for it. At 12:30, i took this shot and bid farewell to my new found friends at Bylakuppe HP Petrol Bunk.

The road from there to Mysore was almost completely deserted, the only slowing points being the surprise road bumps that I sometimes flew over.

Deep in the night at 3 am. Taking my final break and stretch for the 2 day ride with a coffee at CCD after Maddur. A gentle way to guide my mind back into the normalcy of civilized, urbanized life...

                    ...Until the next

tripping on two wheels in Western Ghats is just a superlative experience... road conditions too have largely improved paving a way for plenty of riders going there from everywhere... especially Bangalore and North Kerala. Glad the pics reminded you of the essence out there... love it too.
