  • [Photo Feature]: Rides in and around Goa

    What's this thread about?

I'm sure it is great fun riding to Goa.

But if you are already live in Goa, where do you ride to on the weekends? I'll list out a few ideas here; some roads that are worth riding on - in and around Goa. Bear in mind that this list might be very specific to Goa. Some of the places listed will be small towns or villages and might be unknown to those living outside of Goa. Google maps would definitely help in this case. So if you live in Goa or if you are on a ride to Goa, here are some good roads to ride on.

What exactly do you mean by "good roads"?

Well... my definition of good roads involves a lot of curves, smooth and
clean tarmac, lack of traffic and pedestrians, good vistas, curves... you get it. The destination may not matter in most cases, it is just the ride that is of prime importance. Most of the rides listed would have been started from Panaji because it is the capital of Goa and because I live close to Panaji

    OK, so where's the list?

Here it is. In no particular order. And yes, please add to the list. It'll be great for bikers like me.

    Ride 1: Tambdi Surla

    Where: Here

    Distance
    : 68 KM (one way)

    Duration
    : 1.5 - 2.0 hours (one way)

    Why
: Very smooth road with lot of curves off the main road from Khandepar. From here onwards you are riding in a forested area and small villages. The roads are narrow but with less traffic. Don't make it a frantic ride. Keep it slow and enjoy the cornering fun. Be careful with the truck traffic between Ponda and Khandepar.

    Best time
: A weekend ride is more fun with less heavy vehicular traffic.

    What to see
: The 12th century Mahadev temple at Tambdi Surla. The surrounding forest and hills are pristine, especially in the rains and after monsoons.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

          Ride 2: Rajbagh, Canacona

          Where: Here

          Distance: 55 KM (one way)

          Duration: 1.5 hours (one way)

Why: If you leave early morning, then past Margao and Navelim the roads are a pleasure to ride on. You pass through Chinchinim and other villages where the roads are a bit narrow. Beyond that you ride on roads flanked by fields and wet-lands. Further in the ride, you are on a plateau with beautifully paved roads and barely any traffic. The early morning sun and fresh air does wonders to the atmosphere while riding.

Best time: Weekends. Go on a Sunday morning and avoid the school-going kids on the roads. Not to mention the chaos at Margao.

What to see: On this ride, the destination is beautiful too. You end up on the edge of a cliff over-looking the blue sea. The vista is panoramic. There is usually very little crowd around this time of the day. If you are riding in the evening, you should not miss the sunset.

Ride 3: Om Beach, Gokarn (Karnataka)

                    Where: Here

                    Distance:
                    168 KM (one way)

                    Duration:
                    3.5 - 4 hours (one way)

                    Why:
This destination is outside Goa. You got to ride through the south of Goa into Karnataka. The road after Margao towards Karwar is smooth and fun to ride, especially the section crossing the Karmal Ghat near Canacona. Less traffic and good winding roads make for a pleasant ride. You need to be careful on the ghat section though; the roads, although fun, are narrow and you need to keep an eye out for bigger vehicles coming your way on the curves. Don't be too aggressive on the turns if it is your first time. There are some sharp curves at the end of long straight stretches of the road close to the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. Stay alert and you'll thoroughly enjoy the ride. The roads after Karwar are not bad either. You might encounter some villages and small towns on the way. Slow down when you are passing though there. You know, just the basics

                    Best time:
Again, weekends so that you can avoid the heavy vehicular traffic on the ghat sections. The pics below are from a summer ride. Leave early in the morning to avoid the heat on the way.

Great pics Patrao!! I am from Karwar and truly enjoy Goa to Karwar ride every time. The panorama shot is hardly 20kms from my house, NH17 goes through amazing places but its damn risky. Ride safe bro!

When you said close to Panjim, did you mean porvorim? I visit very often there
