Went to the Kalyani Bridge(on the Ganges) this weekend. Route was via Jessor Road-Madhyamgram-Kalyani Expressway. Distance approx 47 kms. People coming from the west(BT road) can get to the Kalyani Expressway from Belgharia/Sodepore/Barrackpore.
Not much to be seen but still a good weekend ride. Road is comparatively narrow but mostly smooth with a few potholes in between. A number of fisheries line the road.
Road is busy till Barrackpore - after that the traffic becomes a little light. The view from the bridge is awesome. And with open fields and swamps around the place,
air is pretty cool! Caught up with rain while returning - but the experience was awesome. Only stopped while the downpour got too heavy. Recommended for a short 3-4 hour ride.
That's a great share. The route from Barrackpore to Kalyani might be narrow but good to ride on

This is some mouth-watering stuff. Great work dada!
While some regions/areas/locations/destinations have become a household name for tourers, there are place like these, I am sure, many might not even be aware of. I just love such lesser known destinations - makes up for the thirst for uncharted territories. (As some may quote me )

                Re: Weekend Rides Around Kolkata

This one is about Piyali Island.
Piyali Island is often called as the gateway to Sunderbans. This is one of the closest place from Kolkata(around 80 odd km.s from north Kolkata) where you can get a feel of the Sundarbans. This is a popular weekend destination for weekend riders.
Piyali island is well connected with Kolkata via rail and road. The best way to reach is through Baruipur-Joynagar/Dakshin Barasat-Dongajora. Road condition is pretty good. The river Piyali has almost lost its course but the calm and serene environment freshens up the mind. You can take a boat ride or have a walk by the side of the river. But, there is nothing much to do here after the sunset except listening to the nature. Also, the place is not very safe after sunset. A few small roadside hotels are there. Don't expect anything fancy over there.
Below is the routemap and some photos.

                  Re: Weekend Rides Around Kolkata

Gadiara and Garchumuk is like a twin destination. Located in the extreme end of the district Howrah, both the places are well connected by road. Both the places are accesible via Uluberia and Bagnan. But, going by the road condition, it's advisable to take the route through Bagnan. It's a better road. Garchumuk has a dear park and a sluice gate. This is the confluence of Old Damodar river and the Damodar river.
Gadiara is where the river Damodar converges into the river Hoogly(The Ganges). The vastness of the convergence attracts numerous tourists arpund the year. Plenty of Hotels and Lodges are there. The current of the river is very strong during high tide.

                    This is about Chandraketugarh.

Chandraketugarh is an archaeological site located beside the Bidyadhari river, about 35 km north-east of Kolkata, India, in the district of North 24 parganas, near the township of Berachampa and the Haroa Road railhead.
                    More info here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandraketugarh

Though it's one of the oldest known civilization known in the Indian Subcontinent(400BC), little has been done to preserve the heritage. Most of the art pieces are gracing the drawing rooms in western countries. Even the mighty Alexander the Great feared the state of Gangaridai(the kingdom/dynasty Chandraketugarh belongs to) and returned back. This place has such an importance in history but who cares? At least not the Goverment and the ASI!
Chandraketugarh can be reached via many routes but I'd suggest the Newtown-Aakankha-Rajarhat Road-Kharibari-Taki Road-Berachampa route due to less traffic and beautiful roads(the first three km.s of Rajarhat road is very bad though).
There is another extension of the excavation across the Taki road(towards Haroa). The place is bigger than the first spot but almost nothing can be found. A good place to take some rest and snaps!

                          Re: Weekend Rides Around Kolkata

Back after a long time! This time it's Jharkhali.

Jharkhali is a popular tourist destination near Kolkata. It's down South(Sunderbans) and is approx 100 km.s from Kolkata. One can take the Basanti Highway. Road is good except a few stretches. The road is in Pathetic condition near Sorberia Bazaar. This 15 km stretch of the road can take up to 1 hour depending on the traffic. Repair work goes on Basanti Highway round the year for god-knows-why reasons. A better alternative is to take the Baruipur-Canning road, cross Canning bridge on the river and then resume on Basanti Highway. This road is very good. One can crack up triple digits on the speedometer. The Basanti Highway offers better scenic beauty though.
Once at Jharkhali, one should not miss out on the small zoo at the near the ferry ghat. Parking zone is around a km away from the spot and the option is either motor vans or one's own legs. If one has the time, walking is a better option. Many commercial agencies offer conducted tours and packages in Jharkhali. But, never try the honey here. Most of those are impure.
The lst few km. to Jharkhali is a bikers bliss with at least 25-30 turns amongst shades of various trees. Don't miss that part.
