Hi everyone. I think the forum is undergoing some technical changes which made my last post vanish. Nevertheless, here is its very brief version.

The journey has ended. No, the journey is on a break.

Current Status - Back to Bombay. Helping my friend setup a new company.

Total Numbers - 6 months, 22000km, spent around 2 lac.

Route taken in the last leg - Delhi - Shimla - Narkanda - Nako - Pin Valley (Mud) - Kaza - Keylong - Leh - Srinagar - Jammu - Ghaziabad

Last Day - Jammu to Ghaziabad. 680 km. 8 hours in rain.

DK, my friend and my teacher had got his own bike on this last leg. Hence we could not put the selfie stick to any use (we getting bored of it anyway). But this gave me time to try my hands on mobile photography and I am quite happy with the results (check below. all photos taken with moto g2 and edited in eyeEm app)

How it ended - We reached Leh, and I was in love with that place. Plus, I was also starting an itch to work again. So I signed up in a local restaurant as a waiter in the evenings and thought of roaming around during the days. Next day, my friend called up and told me he needs me for setting up his company. I thought this to be a divine calling (I have started believing in such things) and left for Bombay the next day. This made me leave Ladakh without exploring anything but Leh.

Future Plans - I am hoping to stay here for next 6 months and then leave for South East Asia. Again for 6 months or so. This time I am planning travel on foot.

Finally - I have to thank everybody here for keeping us motivated. Your words have pushed us more than you will ever know. Thank you everyone.

Now that's what I call travelling... You have made each and everyone here jealous and motivated... I don't know if I would be able to take this kind of break, but I would love to take my chances in near future...

Wow, I get motivation from the forum & they get motivated by my story. They write something good, motivating me even more which in turn helps me keep riding & that again motivates the members. I think we can play this game forever. I would like to.

Anyways, all I can say is I that I am truly humbled with this experience. But, in any case, if somebody deserves love & respect, then it has to be DK.

He used to be a friend. But now I respect him like a teacher. (Generally it is the other way round, where teachers become friends). He agreed to be with me on the most treacherous of routes when I knew nothing about biking. He never chided me. When we took a chai break, he used to point out the mistakes i did. And that was it. I can't imagine how hard is it not to yell at a person who is riding bike for the first time and that too on bombay goa highway.

He taught me photography. His words 'most of the people carrying DSLRs these days don't know how to make a good use of their basic phone cameras' still ring in my ears. These words forced me to sell off my DSLR and strive to be good at basics first.

We were literally together in everything for 6 months & most of the people we met mistook us for a cute gay couple. But we never ever had a fight on anything (except once). It was partly because we are very good friends, but mostly because of his sage nature. He was fine with every damn thing. And the one time when we had fight, it was me shouting at him for like 15 minutes while he sat there smiling the whole time.

Anyway, leaving the trip aside, he has been travelling around India for last 3 years now, and aims to complete his last leg of East India tour by this year end. He is a brillitant photographer and what I like the best about his travels & photography is that it is beautifully ordinary. It is away from the grandeur a lot of photographers have (which I strive to achieve, by the way) and also doesn't boast of the art that moves the viewer. Through his lens one sees the world just the way it is. And I like it. gone thru the whole travelogue like many of us have done. Felt a kind of envy and jealousy and then it does generate respect for both of you for taking such a journey. One feels in awe what the hell these two guys are upto. It seems in the beginning you were trying to rebel --- i will just go against all norms. people go with helmet, leg guards, leather jeans etc . Look people here I m . I dont know a damn about bike, I dont even know how to ride and here i m going barefoot on a journey that will make all u feel envious of me . The mischievous look when traffic policeman making a challan is so out of world. Most of the pictures taken in the start show that side of you. Rebelling.
Then starts a new phase, where u r at peace with everything around u. The rebellion part is gone and it seems u r on a journey in search of something like a monk. The story line changes dramatically accordingly.
It looks like u achieved what u wanted. This particular comment where u r all praise for your friend show how humble u have become. there r not many people who would goto a blog and would write few paras in praise of their friend.
You two have set new bars for the travelers in India and the bar is so high not many people will be able to touch it. I noticed that in last leg u have written very little though its very appropriate as the saying goes that a more knowledgeable person speaks less. But I implore u to keep on writing as what u write now is gonna motivate a lot many people. u will realise that more & more people r joining this forum because of people like u.

To be true , I didn't know bhishma was updating the thread after our rajasthan trip. But after reading comments , I feel more people are showing interest in this road trip. So finally I decided to join this community and update the journey further till bhishma join me back on highway to thailnad in feburary . I am not as good as bhishma in writing but I will try to keep this thread running. After bhishma left , I covered punjab , UP , Bihar and a part of Mp. I have reached jharkhand now and its more thn 25,000km so far. I will start with my photos from punjab in my next message.

Most of the images on this thread are from mobile phone (lumia1020 and bhishma's phone motog i think) and some of them are from DSLR nikon D5100 with kit lens(18-55mm)

Hi all,

Let me introduce myself before I start posting update on this thread. I am Deepak (aka Dk) who started this trip with bhishma 8 months back . We were on same bike till delhi after which I brought a 2nd hand bike( RE thunderbird 2005) . Bhishma had already updated this journey till leh and after jammu I planned to continue this trip to cover rest part of india.

After bhishma left in jammu , I didn't have ATM card, mobile connection and ID proof as I lost my wallet in leh and my SIM card was corrupted. I entered into punjab through pathankot but traveling without any one of these was really risky. So didn't go anywhere in pathankot and went directly to my uncle's place in kapoorthala. Took a break of 10 days and arranged ATM card from a friend and luckily I had a scan copy of driving license in my mail. I took a colored printout of scan copy and laminated it. It's actually a fake id but I am able to manage thing since last 1.5 month with this id and I hope it will work fine in future as well .

After kapoorthala , I went directly to golden temple in amritsar. I didn't have any idea where to go in punjab(I knew only about amritsar and anandpur sahib) , so my initial plan was amritsar-bhatinda-anandpursahib. I thought it would 2-3 days trip but I spent around 8-9 days in punjab.

I didn't get a room in amritsar gurudwara as it was crowded and they don't give room to single tourist, so just stayed thr for 1 day in hotel. I visited golden temple and place where lav-kush were borned(It was surprise to know the extension of ram's son story to amritsar) and decided to move ahead . Next day I left for bhatinda but a few kilometers away from amritsar I was stopped by a policeman for checking due to recently terrorist attack in gurdaspur. I told them my story and place which I am planning to visit in punjab.Thats the the point where my trip schedule got extended .Policeman suggested me to visit all historical gurudwaras starting from taran-taran , faridkot , muksar and thn go to bhatinda.

I always belive in old saying "everything happens for a good reason" and my encounter with policeman was just another reason to claim it. So i took the route suggested by policeman and decided to cover as many gurudwaras as possible . On moving from amirtsar to bhatinda , I felt like I am not riding a motorcylce but instead on a boat and sailing through a green ocen . It was green as far as my eyes could see.

I tried for stay in mukshar as well but didnt get a chance to stay thr for the same reason as I was single. After muksar , I left for bhatinda and decided to try few more gurudwaras before giving up but got lucky this time. I was waiting outside haji patan gurudwara office and met an old man. He asked me to wait for few minutes. after few minutes of silecnce , we started talking and I told him my story. He was happy to know what I did and what I am planning to do. A few minutes later, the manager came and before I could say anything , the old man asked the manager to give me room. From the converstation of those two , i felt the old man was care taker of gurudwara and I thought he was just a visitor.


I had my first room in gurudwara and visited two more gurudwara in bhatinda. Next day when I was leaving , the old man suggested me places to visit . Since I was traveling with fake ID so I asked the manager in office to give me receipt of my stay(anyone staying in gurudwara needs to give 100rs while taking rooms in gurudwara which will be returned while leaving. And if you want to donate something to gurudwara you will get a recipt). I took a recipt in case I meet policeman in future and this came out to a really nice decision. I kept on collecting recipt and everytime i visit gurudwara i used to show them recipt of my previous stay. And i guess thats the only reason I even got a room for stay in all gurudwaras.


I covered around 15-16 gurudwaras in my trip. My schedule was wake up at 5 O clock and listen to gurubani early morning , take breakfast in gurudwara where i stay , lunch in different gurudwara and dinner in different gurdwara where i will stay . I really didnt know why I was visiting gurudwaras but I really enjoyed listning to gurubani in evening and morning , so I prefer to stay in gurudwaras only. I came to know about the history of all gurudwara after visiting anandpur sahib museum(end of my trip) also known as 8va ajooba. After visiting this museam I came to know thr are gurudwaras in gurdhaspur and pathankot as well. So I think, ananadpur sahib should be start of punjab trip.

Intially I was running away from doing any work in gurudwara but later I found myself comfortable with it. I cleaned plates not only mine but others as well, clean matteress and carried wooden log from truck to kitchen. I didnt start all these by myself, during my first few stay each time i went for dinner in langur , i was asked by people doing seva(work) to help them. It happened once , twice , thrice and I came to know how other people are doing same thing by thr own will. Within few days I started enjoying doing seva and thats how i spent my evening.. During my last days of stay in gurudwaras and even now , I dont wait for someone to ask , I feel good to do the seva in gurudwara. But ironay is I found people who dont let me do any work , and I need to tell them that I want to do seva.
