I never wanted to lead a routine life and until now I haven’t really attached to anything that I don’t find interesting every day. I’m quite gifted in that sense because i had the freedom to do whatever I like. My family wouldn’t stop me from doing it. Rather I would also not obey them just for the sake that they raised me. I’m just too straight forward for the modern days. :P

It had been a year since I quit working. I started a small scale business which was my dream. It went well for quite some days until things started to get boring. Somehow, you won’t know certain things until you experience them in real life situation on first hand. Business was one such thing and it was different than i thought. I really thought it would be my freedom but the real problem comes with finance. It’s all about how much you could risk investing to develop it so that you can meet your monthly financial needs. Life was good but then there was this feel, you know lack of something interesting. What I really missed from corporate life was those friends/people who would be always surround you. That kind of makes you forget your worries and get along.

Simply, life was boring without adventure. So I thought of a trip with friends. Approached them and everyone was like I can’t make it up for 10 days no leave, no time, blah.. blah.. blah.. We'll do it by the end of the year for the New Year. But I badly wanted a trip and thought why to depend on others, why not a solo. There is a first time for everything. I was also motivated by many travelogues and riders to do a solo. I was like it’s time to find yourself, I mean self realization. So i decided to go on with it very lately after a lotta dilemma.

I planned the route, prepped her well. She went through a general checkup, recently got a new rear wheel (alloy rim), a pair of new radial shoes(MRF Revz), Front brake pad, Clutch cable and engine oil. She was more ready to take me for a ride in which she always excels. And it was time, Oct 28th 2015, the day we kick started the journey.

There she is, a beauty! The First picture I clicked during the ride. She is always as gorgeous.

Day 1: Theni to Ernakulam 206kms

It was a sunny day in Theni, had lunch around 12 and was ready to start. I setup the backpack with bungee nets in the rear seat, GPS mount, my DIY tank bag. I had to put my camera bag around my neck and rest it on the tank as i had no other option. That was a bit uncomfortable on bad roads and twisties on the mountains. I left home by 12:40 after a quick send off by everyone at home and my best buddy Bala and his bros. My plan was to ride until Munnar and stop for refreshment. As i started up the hills towards Bodi mettu the weather just transformed as usual. It started drizzling when we were just few kms ahead of Bodimettu. So when we reached Bodimettu, the border of Tamilnadu, I stopped for a Tea and had to put on the rain liner and cover up everything we had with rain covers. That was just 10 mins. I crossed Poopara as expected. There is this other route via Rajakad after Poopara to Ernakulum, but heard that the roads are not as excellent as the Munnar highway NH 49. So I decided to take her through the later route even though it was some 30kms more. It was raining quite heavily but I didn’t mind pushing her through the turn’s cuz it was quite a well known tarmac for us as we did two trips earlier this year in the same route. One was to Munnar and other was to Valparai via Munnar. We didn’t stop in Munnar as I was enjoying the Ghat section. I thought of stopping in Adimali for a break which is some 26kms away from Munnar. Finally the rain stopped and we encountered a water falls just ahead of Adimali and didn’t want to miss the view. So we stopped there for almost 20 mins, clicked some pics and decided to move on.

I was less than 100kms to the destination for the day. It was around 17:00 and Ernakulum was 60kms away and it started to rain again. I had to change the glove and put the rain liner on. So I stopped for a Chaya and started around 17:30. It was getting quite dark due to the dark clouds. Within the next 5kms it started raining heavily and i didnt bother as i got everything covered up except my gloves. It got drenched soon than i expected. I had to stop and switch to the other neoprene one i had. I was not surprised to see the dye from my Cramster touring gloves on my hands cuz I read about it before i ordered one. I had no other option as i was on a tight budget. Finally reached Ernakulam around 19:00.

The falls i was talking about.

The plan was to stay with my friend Vicky who recently moved on to Ernakulam few days back. He was staying in Ceylon Bake House as he was yet to rent a house. Unfortunately when i started he had to leave to Pune for some work. But he was kind enough to leave the room keys at the reception for me to stay on his behalf. It would have been nice if he was there to share the details of the journey for the day and to have dinner with some chit chat. I had Chicken fried rice for dinner and Fruit salad with ice cream for dessert. It was time to call it a day hence set alarm to 05:00, plugged my Nexus5 in the charger and went to bed with little excitement about the next day.

Day 2: Ernakulum to Kasaragod 358kms

Day 2: Ernakulum to Kasaragod 358kms

I woke up even before the alarm went off and swiped my Nexus5 to unlock and it didnt. Tried again it didnt. I sat up properly and plugged it out of the charger and tried again, nothing happened. Freak! Found out that one side of the digitizer is not working. That spoiled the day. Well I tried all the possible tricks but nothing worked out. Finally thought i would wait until 9 for the LG service centre to open up so that I can change display and get going. There wasn't much to cover for the day as it was just short of 400kms. It would had been nice if I started early that i could have enjoyed the sunrise in any of the beaches on the coastal highway. My bad! I finished my breakfast, went down to the reception and enquired about the LG service centre. The receptionist was very helpful suggesting some of the best aftermarket service centers. But the problem was they all open after 10:30. I had no choice but LG Direct service centers as they open by 9. I settled all the restaurant bills and got back to room to get things packed and ready. By 08:30 I was done.

Then the next drama came into place! I called the LG service by 09:00 no one picked the phone. So i thought I would go directly instead of wasting time as i was packed and ready. I managed to set the route on Navimaps with that partially working display. It was 09:45 by the time I reached LG Service centre. The surprise was that it was a retail outlet of LG and not a service centre but the morons have mentioned it as a LG direct service centre in website. I got the number for the service from the guy there and checked for the availability of the display. To add to the disappointment there was no stock of the Nexus 5 display. So after all this drama and frustration finally I started from Ernakulum by 10:15. Already i was frustrated and the traffic made it worse. I got traf****ked in every available signal until the city outskirts. I reached the outskirts by 11:10. I then quickly stopped for fuel and was feeling better. I didn’t wanna waste time so I started immediately.

My intermediate destination for the day was Muzhuppilangad which is approx 250kms from Ernakulum. I had almost done 30kms approx which leaves it to 220kms. As soon as you get to the outskirts of the city you can feel the hot humid sea breeze. The roads were pretty good though. So i had no problem covering the next 100kms except for the traffic signals in Highway. You probably have like 20 signals in Kerala highway. It was irritating and you had to go through small towns all the way so we couldn’t be any faster. There were beautiful views which you can’t get past without stopping by to feast your eyes. Of course that’s why I chose this route in the first place. I stopped somewhere next to Ponnani after I saw a tender coconut vendor. Quenched my thirst with a 20mins break and in the meanwhile had to take care of her as I forgot to lubricate the chain in the midst of all the confusion in the morning.

We were some 115kms away from Muzhuppilangad Drive-in beach and it was already 14:30. I was revving her hard with all the enthusiasm for the date with her in the beach. You can drive along the entire 5km stretch of the beach. Be it in your car or bike. I guess tourist buses/vans are not allowed. After some nice views through clean roads and traffic, it took more than 2 hrs to reach the Muzhuppilangad Drive-in beach. It was around 17:00 when we reached. Spent almost an hour there. I used a selfie stick for the first time (borrowed it from a friend) riding in the beach, it was hard to hold the stick and ride with one hand. It was pathetic and dangerous due to the beach sand. However managed to shoot a video almost half the length of the ride in the beach. Couldn't park the bike in the beach and enjoy the view as you know the side stand doesnt go easy with the beach sand. So parked near the exit and had a Nair kadai chaya, was talking to people about my journey as they were curious to see me fully packed and solo.

            The Exit!

The thing about such places are, that it is hard to leave from there. You dont get enough of the moment, after all, no matter how long you happened to spend time there. Finally said goodbye to the beautiful beach and fired her to reach the final destination for the day, Kasaragod. As we traveled further the roads were getting bad with full of patches and not so deep pot holes. It was quite tiring concentrating too much on the pot holes and clutch so I decided to finish dinner after some 45kms. I had roti and egg curry. I was hurrying as it was also getting dark, late and I hadn’t booked a room by then to stay. Unlike other places, towns in Kerala shut down almost by 20:00 due to the climate. So was the hurry.

Finally we reached Kasaragod (~60kms) around 20:00. I was damn tired and as soon I saw a Juice shop I stopped. I had a Pome juice and enquired about good cheap hotels for stay. The guy in the Juice shop pointed out some hotels. Unfortunately no single room was available and the double room did cost me 750Rs. After trying at three places and some bargaining I got a double room for 420Rs. I settled for it. Wrapped up for the day, spoke to my friends and family about my stay and quickly went to bed as I was bloody tired. The alarm was set to 05:00.

Kasaragod to Bekal Fort. It is actually on the way to kasaragod from Ernakulam. If you are to stay and visit the fort, the best bet is Kasaragod if you are on a tight budget as the places in Bekal had sky rocketing prices. (prime family places i'm talking about)

As we moved on, I thought of stopping at a 100Kms mark from Maravanthe, as Karwar was more than 150Kms to reach.

The dinner was finished in style, we chatted for almost an hour and the clouds started thundering. He advised I better leave if not I might get stuck in the rain for the next one hour cuz I was telling him about starting early the next morning and had to go to bed as early as possible. The time was already 21:00 so I waved goodbye and started from there. I reached Veeniola in the next 20 mins and as he advised the clouds started pouring down like anything. I wished I had someone to grab a pint with and enjoy the weather. As it was getting late set the alarm to 5:00 and went to bed.

Will post pics of Veeniola holiday home from archive soon as i didnt click any pics.

One Hell of a ride! I am sure you must have enjoyed!

Just teensy correction. What you are referring to a Garuda, is actually looking like a Brahminy Kite.

Cheers mate and have fun! Safe rides.

I was actually kinda pissed off about the start from kochi due to the failure of my mobile display else it would have been peaceful that day. The sunrise in the beach would have made up my day! Kinda still can't let go that I missed it.
