  • Kerala: 5 Days and 1500 kms

There are times when we feel why is this place called "GODS OWN COUNTRY"

I am not good at photography neither am i good at my writing skills hence please dont expect a very beautiful trip log...well after so many years this probably is my first thread about a trip i guess...

    Kerala:

I never planned this trip and i never thought that i will get to ride in Kerala, distance was an obvious issue and then the hassles of shipping the bike a week in advance and the trouble to my counterpart in Kerala to make sure that the bike is in a ridable condition etc....

Post our Sikkim - Bhutan trip i made some nice friends one of them being Rajeev Livingstone fondly called as (JITU). He was with us for the Sikkim - Bhutan ride and we got along very well, he has been inviting Goopi (RazorBlades) and me since quite some time to visit Kerala to his hometown...welll Razor did not but I did

Kerala's three historical regions: Malabar (northern Kerala), Kochi (central Kerala), and Travancore (southern Kerala)

    Day: 0

I was scheduled to travel this magnificant place from the 23rd March - 28th March of 2009. I got Railway ticket from Mumbi to Trivandrum for the 21st March and reched Jitu's place on the 22nd Evening. I took the train thinking that i will plan my ride in the 2 days that i have but guess what (I know all of you guessed it right) i didnt.

It was so very nice to see the first set of hospitality that was rendered to me, Jitu waited for me at the Railway Station and we drove to pick Jitu's better half (Preeta) and two sweet little once Ju and Pu (pet names for the preety ladies). We reached home by about 7:30 and Jitu mom had cooked us some delicious food. We visited a friend of Jitu who apparently is the lead vocalist for a rock band known as "AVIAL' and they had just come out with their new album. We were chilling out at his place and wailing away some time; soon it was very late and we decided to head back home, came home and set an alarm for the ride starting at 5:00 am on 23rd March

I always believed that distance is calculated on Speed factor and on Time factor; now i clearly undertand the relativity of the formula 'Speed = Distance * Time" but here in Kerala i noticed one thing which is nobody will ever tell you the distance in Km but they will give you an approximate time frame to reach the place, which was very confusing.

More to come...photos and the entire trip log...

I don't know whether Photobucket has any option to resize the images. You could probably resize the images before you upload it on the net.

ahh.. the much awaited.. keep writing buddy
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Always be ready (get geared) to fall and then think of sitting on the motorcycle.

                            Day: 1

I casually asked Jitu the distance between Trivandrum - Tiruvalla; he said its approximatly 140 kms but it will take you close to 4 hrs, i was a bit optimistic about the 4 hr ride cause even in the worst possible circumstances i would generally take about 3 hrs maximum considering 50 kms per hr but i was amazed by Jitu's calculation it really took me 4 hrs to reach, I left at 5:30 am from Jitu's house on his ZMA, although Jitu had shown me the road towards NH 47 i was still a new guy on the Kerala roads so took my time in figuring out where the road leads too and had to ask a few angry old men in the morning who were going to temple..(i bet it was fun looking at their faces in the morning..they were scared to see a huge guy with the DSG jacket early morning) and so i found the road NH 47 towards Haripad and from Haripad I had to take the road that takes me to Tiruvalla, I have my relatives put up there and i had decided that i will meet all my relatives in Kerala this time around (It has been over 6 years that i had not visited Kerala; and for those who didnt get it till now I am a Keralite) So i was home by 10 am with no additional plans on my mind, i choose to visit all the possible relatives from my mom end to even some from my dad's end , so rode to all the places and eat a lot of food at each onces places right from Puffs to Bananna Chips, Tapioca chips, Fish and Beef fry, Kerala Paratha (Its different)..I must hve visited atleast 7 relatives of the 8 that i have based in Tiruvalla.

                            NH - 47
Beautiful roads without any potholes...should be able to keep an average speed of 50 kms per hour...this road passes through the coastline although we can just see glimpses of the sea shore but we are still a bit far away from it....
The national highway is a nice 4 lane highway with proper signboards and there are plenty of people around to ask if in doubt..
You will find all the basic amenities required on the roadside itself viz Water, Tea, Coffee, Light snacks, Cigarette etc.
Major worry on the streets of Kerala are people who cross the road without any apprehensions they have it in their head (Vehicles have brakes and we don't) so they cross, all of us need to be careful while riding in Kerala.

From Haripad the road was a single lane road and it passed through a lot of paddy farm and rubber tree plantation an all and it was a sight to see...however i was in no mood to stop and click photos as the road was narrow and there were busses going to and fro in frequency..didnt wanna get run over by them.

The day ends there and here is the summary of the day.

                            NH - 47
05:30 am: Trivandrum - Kollam (Quilon) - Tangasseri - Chavara - Karungapalli -Kayamkulam - Haripad

                            Diversion and State Highway connecting

                            08:30 am: Haripad - Mavelikara
                            10:00 am: Tiruvalla

10:45 - 15:00 hrs: In and round Tiruvlla with relatives

                            15:15: Kottayam

                            17:00: Back home to tiruvalla

                            Total Distance run: 268 kms

The day in Kerala starts very early and ends early too say by 18:00 hrs it dark and by 20:00 there is hardly any poplutation on the streets.

The roads in Kerala are good there are no pot holes as such at most places and the roads are tarmaced beautifully but there are lot of restructuring and construction work on the roads that are presently going on, which i am sure by the beginning of the monsoon(June) that should be done. This is where i faced difficulty on the roads as there was a lot of constuction going on at lot many places i had to be slow on the roads. Kerala roads have so many Twistys and curves that can put Lavassa and Amby Valley to shame (honestly).
                            Some Photos from Day 1

                            Trying to capture the moon

                            Early morning catch

                            Bike

Some photos of the bird and pet collection we have back home

These birds are bought by my cousin from different parts of the world...most of them are doves...and there were 4 big dogs in the house...i had to be frisked away here and there before the housekeepers could catch hold of them and keep them in a cage

i don't know what breed the above dog is; i am just lucky that he didn't rip me off..
There was a great dane too but i guess they are not harmful but the size is scary...sorry couldnt capture that...

Nice pics & pets. Just that the pics are too large for my screen!

You are bang-on about the distance/time factor in Kerala. I guess its to do with the twisty-curvy roads all over Kerala, plus the guys walking on the edge of the roads and ofcourse, the maniac buses!!

Are you planning to go all the way up to Kasaragod?
