  • Ride Through The Valley Of Fire State Park

In January 2014 I had visited Las Vegas to attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). With that over, I found some time to rent a Harley and ride around the state of Nevada to get away from the madness of Las Vegas. I rented a Heritage Classic from EagleRider and decided to ride through the Valley of Fire State Park with a detour to see the Hoover Dam. I rode a total of 256 kms and did it at a nice an easy pace stopping multiple times to take pictures and sometime just stop the engine and pause to enjoy the breathtaking views along the way.

Here are some pictures I took along the way.

My first stop was at the famous Hoover Dam, 55 kms away from the EagleRider outlet.

From there I started a 108 km ride to the Valley of Fire State Park. The roads were in impeccable condition with no heavy traffic whatsoever. I came across a few cars and cyclists and two kinds of motorcycle riders - laid back people like me cruising at an easy pace enjoying the scenery and people riding crotch rockets ripping away like they were in a Grand Prix.

The Valley of Fire sits in an Indian reservation and got its name from the flaming red color of the rocky landscape. It was hard to keep my eyes on the road and the rock formations glided past me.

You are not allowed to ride off road in this parts of the park because these rocks erode rapidly which is what gave them these shapes. The only off-road thing you can do is trek.

As I started riding back to EagleRider I suddenly realized that I was hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised to see that it was 4 pm and I had completely forgotten to stop for lunch. Frankly, till today I never thought looking at rocks could be this fascinating. I'm glad I decided to do this. It turned out to be an amazing ride.

Whenever I travel on business I try and find a free day or weekend and rent a motorcycle.

Does your Indian International Driving Licence work everywhere? Or some countries require any local documents?

I was asked to produce my IDP on only two occasions. Sri Lanka and Italy. Everywhere else nobody bothered. But I always renew my IDP (it's valid for 1 year durations only) before renting a car or motorcycle abroad. This is because if I meet with an accident or get pulled over I want to be in the right side of the law for legal and insurance purposes.

            Ya,
Better to be on safer side and ready with documents.
            Idiots believe documents than logic/sense.
