  • Independence Weekend '17

Just finished completing series of matches playing Rocket League online and not feeling sleepy. Better do some writing than some reading before sleeping.

Past few weekends my Saturday is lost in travel for official work and not able to utilise the 2 days of weekend completely to take my new bike out after first service. Independence weekend I took compensatory off to make it 4 days holidays in a row.

Kicked off with a short ride to Nearby Vani after Sai karthik is not answering the phone.

Day 1 - Short Ride - Nashik to Vani (Sapta Shrungi)

Starting at 10.45 am in Nashik the weather was dry and sun was blazing hot. Roads to Vani are in very bad shape once we leave Nashik city limits. Not to mention single lane traffic with trucks.

But once we were moving closer to Vani temperature dropped and monsoon clouds made their presence felt and shunned off the sun into the backgrounds.

Halted for a while to catch the glimpse of the scenery.

After the short break we started moving up the road towards the famous Saptashrungi temple we were shortly greeted by a good series of twisted road turns which led us to intermediate flat land on top of the mountain.

This stretch of the road is engulfed by the clouds in every direction except the road.

After that we moved further ahead and reached the temple. Its raining there and crowded place at the foothill.

I did a image lookup of the temple before going there and the view with the monsoon is more breath taking than what images of temple were available on the internet.

Tried for better shot but no one was allowing me to get on top of houses to get a view without current wires.

After having some corn at the temple we head back to explore the down hill side and on some small reservoir caught our attention.

After the small photo shoot and enjoying the time & air at the small pump house reservoir we started to head back to Nashik, thinking the wrists are going to pain in playing the dodge the potholes.

    Duke 250 did well though.

And "NO" we did not go inside temple as we did not take bath that day morning

    Off to sleep now.

Ummm. No. I did not know that "OP owns the thread concept" is more prevalent on this board. I stick to topic of weekend western ghat ride, moreover the rides were small.

Anyways apologies to Sai. Will ensure not to repeat once again

Day 2 : Nashik to Malshej Ghat

            Route
            : https://goo.gl/Bu4hqz

Onward journey is the best route. Small narrow patchy roads going between mountain villages ascents and descents. Zero traffic. Hard to find people and cell phone signals for 10kms+ stretches.

If you happen to have an Hero Impulse or any dirt style bikes you have numerous wild trails to enjoy by the side of the road

Decided at 11.15 am to go for Malshej Ghat and we were out of Nashik by 12pm. Wonderful view caught my attention on the Mumbai - Nashik Highway as my friend fuelled up his bike.

There was absolutely no signal on my phone and our directions came people we have been giving lift occasionally village to village. The either sides of the road are filled with trees and green grass. Sometime the trees form canopy tunnels that are mesmerising to ride

After completing a rough patch of the road uphill we have reached the mountain top flat land nearby small village of 10 huts. They are farming by the roadside and over the fields we can see the entire Kasara stretch of mountains in clouds

On the way downhill again we crossed a beautiful bridge over a small river. We stopped there to relax for a while as the humidity is making us go crazy with sweating and cant up the pace due to the condition of road.

While leaving from here we saw a tractor where the entire flat bed cargo was filled with city people around 20 odd, with colourful dresses and entire range of Ray Ban sunglasses. The best part was they are not carrying any phone or cameras in hand just enjoying the route with family in not even close to minimal comfort tractor ride.

We were lost on the road for a bit while and after we met some local we were back and correct road and manage to reach Dolkhamb (I memorised the name as Dokhlam, probably media brainwashing, and kept asking people for directions and that led to the confusion). This local guy was quick to get our mistake and guided to Dolkhamb.

Immediately after leaving we left we met the same river we crossed earlier a bit upstream and a tiny waterfall leading to it

OK the crowd begins now and the biggest waterfall in the ghat is flooded by drunk people with cars parked halfway inside road. Loud music blowing through the cars in place of weak rock structures that fall every year with landslides in monsoons. I regret not being able to photograph there.

After the crossing the crowded place we went ahead to see the other end of the ghat and trust me the way from Narayangaon is most beautiful from what felt mostly due to open road patches.

Doing couple of rounds on bike of the ghat section hunger kicked in and I had two boiled corn pods seasoned with salt and chilli powder (only food so far). I finished eating in an amazingly fast manner only matched by cartoon characters in eating meat off a bone.

Rested there for some while enjoying the view from the government made observation points. Too crowded I did not go completely inside.

We started heading back as we noticed that the light started to fail faster than usual (as usual in mountains) and also my Duke 250 is low on fuel by the time we started return. Need to fuel up as well.

We were sure that return has to be via Mumbai - Nashik expressway as night journey is easier that way compared to lonely road we made our onward journey on. While having food i had a quick chat with the hawkers and they said easiest way is to go Murbad, fuel up and take the forest route to Shahpur and catch the Mumbai Nashik expressway. What a helpful advice it was. Really thankful to that guy, otherwise would have gone straight to Kalyan - Nashik.

We went downhill the same route we came in via Moroshi and fuelled up the bike as advised nearby Murbad. Rain started and it was very torrential rainfall till we reached Murbad. Beore taking right at Murbad to Shahapur we had coconut to keep up with the mineral loss in sweating.

Murbad to Shahapur is Single lane 2 wheeler and LMV only road due to weak bridges on the river. The entire stretch with the exceptional of small villages is very good road and we managed to do a constant 90+kmph in rain till Shahapur.

From Shahapur we took Mumbai Nashik expressway. Its 7 pm by the time we were 82kms from Nashik and there is lot of traffic mostly MH15 vehicles. Everything was fine until we were about 2 kms to Kasara that heavy rain started and I went through what can be described as the lowest visibility ride I ever did.

In Kasara ghat there was heavy rain, completely 4 wheelers and thick fog. My helmet visor is completely fogged, opened it up and my glasses fogged and full of droplets. I could not see more than 3 ft and had to 40+ kmph on the side of cliffs. Even cars turned off their headlamps due to light diffusion by fog. they are only running hazard ights for vision.

Post Kasara ghat the entire place road from Kasara- Manas resort to Igapuri toll gate is completely under fog. After crossing toll gate we took short break to heat up from soaking in cold rain for an hour.

My Helmet condition during ride. Spectacles also in similar shape as that of visor.

We left Igatpuri toll gate and were in Nashik by 9.30 pm.

Good write up man. That Dolkhamb route is amazing as you go through the jungle.
One good thing i did when riding on that route was to have Here We Go offline map downloaded on the phone. Saved me quite some time and worry.

Would love to join in sometime with you guys.
