    ***PROLOGUE***

It was a rainy June evening and business as usual in the office. I was working on one of my projects and occasionally was fidgeting around on WhatsApp. I received a text from Harish – “Bhai free hai kya? Call karu?” I promptly replied with a Thumbs Up emo. The phone rang –

    Me: “Bol bhai kaisa hai”
Harish: “Ekdum mast hoon bhai. Sun, roadtrip plan kar raha hoon.”
    Me: “Kidhar jaara”
Hairsh: “Uttrakhand, December mein. Tu aayega?”
Me: “December? Thandi mein marega yede, main nahi aa raha”
Harish: “Draft plan banaya hai check your email”
Me: “Haan, check karta hoon. Lekin count me out. Bye”

I hung up and forgot about the conversation and went back to my work. The word ‘Uttarakhand’, for some strange reason, kept on ringing in my head. I decided to take a break and went down to have some chai with my colleague Brijesh. Brijesh had recently been to Uttarakhand so I asked him how his experience was. He only had good things to say about the Land of Gods. My curiosity increased and I finally checked my email and found a word document titled ‘UK Trip draft.doc’ sent by Harish. I went thru the document and was so impressed with the details – even in the draft version - that I had almost made up my mind to give it a go. Afterall, it was almost a year I was itching for a ride and the highways were frantically calling!
The main reason(s) I was excited for the trip were these of the many points Harish had made in the draft document –

    1. Visit Taj Mahal – 27th December 2017
    2. Paragliding activity (7000+ feet) in Ranikhet – 29th December 2017
    3. Trek to Deoria Tal and camp under the stars – 31st December 2017
    4. 5 km snow trek to Tunganath and Chandrashila – 1st January 2018
    5. Ride in Asia’s longest cable car ropeway, Auli – 4th January 2018
    6. River rafting in Ganga, Rishikesh – 6th January 2018
    7. India’s highest bungee jumping in Rishikesh – 7th January 2018

The plan, even though draft, was extensive and the select points above were too tempting for me to say ‘NO’ to what would, in future, be the most epic road trip of my life so far.
Later that night I called up Harish and congratulated him on a plan very well made, asked him if he needed any help, asked him to ride safe in the hills and the usual BS. He understood that I am just fooling around and am IN for the ride.
The next few days, I was finding ways to break this news at home – getting permission was particularly difficult at this time coz it involved Mamta too. Yes, she was super excited for this trip and was supposed to ride pillion with me (we hadn’t been to Agra or Uttarakhand ever). Eventually, after a lot of promises to ride slow and safe the approval was stamped! DONE – mission one accomplished.

Mission two was to get the leaves approved in office – 26th December to 12th January. I called up my boss in the US and told him that I am going on a road trip up north and need almost 3 weeks leave. Knowing my boss, as cool as he is, asked about my plan, I told him all about it like an excited kid. I remember, he laughed a little and said he approves my leave. I dropped an email and got his approval on paper then applied leave in the system and DONE! Second major hurdle crossed. The road trip was still some 5 months away but my excitement rocketed thru the roof.

In the following days, the same rituals ensued whenever a group plan is made. A WhatsApp group was created and 5 members added in it. Harish, Kalpana (Hairsh’s better half), Mamta (My better half), Aldrich and I. The flurry of GM, GN messages and a truck load of off topic conversations started flowing in. Except Harish, who used to send useful information and pictures of the places in UK we were supposed to visit, for all of us it was just another group to spam forwarded messages. Promises to meet up at Hairsh’s place to discuss further on the trip route and activities were made and kept but most meets ended up in guzzling beers and hogging burgers from West Coast, watching MTV Beats - with zero discussions about the trip.

Eventually, things settled down and conversations about the trip started to happen. The WhatsApp group finally started making sense, it started serving its purpose for existence. The shopping list (mostly warm clothes) was finally jotted down, motorcycle saddle bags finalized and route brainstorming between the 3 gents from the group took place regularly…we were heading in the right direction.

Cut to December 3rd Week – t minus 7 days

All of us were a little nervous now. Also a little excited since the road trip was getting closer and closer. The Whatsapp conversations transformed into teleconference calls for serious discussions and status updates on shopping and packing. This time the meetings at Harish’s place were fruitful and our UK TRIP document went thru some major version changes frequently. All of us memorized the route details and day to day activities planned. The 3 motorcycles were serviced in due time and were ready to go. The next couple of days were spent in final shopping and packing bags also checking on each other’s excitement levels. The work week got busiers since all of us were busy completing any pending work and preparing handover documents for the work to be carried out in our absence – none of it was exciting coz all we had in our mind was the beautiful Uttrakhand, calling us.
Finally, the day had arrived. The moment of truth. It was just around 24 hours remaining before our lives were going to change for better. We were all set to experience the major awesomeness Uttarakhand had to offer. The land of PanchPrayag, the DevBhumi, the Holy Waters of Ganga and the snow clad Hills were calling – and we had to go!

Re: A tale of cities and hills - An epic motorcycle roadtrip from the City of Dreams to the Land of

        Day 1 –
        Date 24th December
        Mumbai to Godhra
        Distance – 500 KM
        Route – NH8
        Mumbai – Bharuch – Vapi – Vadodra – Halol – Vejalpur – Godhra

So before every big ride, blame it on the excitement, the previous night is generally sleepless for the rider. Especially when it is one of the biggest and adventure filled rides he’s ever going to be on. On the 23rd December (day before the ride) I had a lot of pending things to be taken care of so that ate into most of my day. Also, I rode a total of 140 kms during the day meaning my body was already tired and the last thing I wanted before this ride was stress.
However, as things turned out to be, I was really stressed from all the running around during the day. I remember going to sleep at 2:30 in the morning and the ride was supposed to begin at 6:00 AM meaning I had to be up and ready by 5:00 maximum. I thought to myself “2 cans of Redbull thru the day and I’ll be fine – anyway I just have to ride 500 kms today. NH8 is fast and it is easy”.
There is something I want to share, and it has been happening with me since many many years, call it poor planning or sheer bad luck – before any big ride for some or the other reason I never get a sound sleep. It always happens that I end up sleeping just for 2 or 3 hours (maximum) and then I have to be ready to ride. But again, for some strange reason the moment I am on my motorcycle I feel a surge of fresh energy in my body which helps me focus and complete the ride without any problems. Touchwood!

Anyway, back to our big day, the first day of our ride. Mamta and I geared up by 5:30 AM, came downstairs to find my mom performing pooja on my CBR. She always does this before I go for a big ride. Tilak was applied on the windshield, and our foreheads, felt like we’re going to accomplish something big! Touched our parent’s feet, took their blessings and off we went.

Mamta was quiet until the time we left our locality. It was still dark and empty. The moment we hit the main road I heard a sharp scream from the pillion seat and in my Sena Bluetooth headset! Honestly, it got me; I was terrified for a second. Nothing was wrong though – it was Mamta screaming with excitement, hugging me. This was her first ever road trip (we had been dating for almost 8 years before we got married just over a year ago) but she never got a chance to accompany me for any of my road trips during our courtship days. So it was really special for her. I did all I could to make sure it remains special for her and for that I had to be confident that she’s comfortable in the pillion seat. Sachin Nair, a very good friend and riding buddy from LOST lent me his Gel Seat; I secured it to the rear seat for additional comfort for Mamta. The saddle bags were touching her legs during our test runs, so I tied them together, extra tight from the rear so they were a little outward from both the sides but in the process gave ample legroom to Mamta to keep her feet properly planted on the pegs. Also, another good friend and riding buddy from LOST, Abhilabh Wamorkar lent me his Scala Bluetooth headset which I installed on Mamta’s helmet so she can communicate with me whenever she wants and more importantly can access her music on the GO.

Aniruddha Shinde, a very good friend of mine who rides a Duke 390 had called the previous night and told me that he’ll accompany us till Charoti and have breakfast together. As promised, he met me enroute Hotel Fountain – which was our meeting point. We reached fountain around 6:30 AM there I saw Harish and Kalpana fully geared, waiting for us. Aldrich, our funny man was late, by almost 30 minutes. That gave us a chance to remove our gear and enjoy the morning chai and some chatter with fellow bikers.

Hotel Fountain on NH8 is a famous meeting point for all the breakfast riders coming from all over Mumbai who want to have a sweet piece of highway to stretch their motorcycles’ legs. NH8 is known for its smooth, 6 lane flowing tarmac so most of the superbikers from Mumbai meet on Sundays to enjoy the ride and have breakfast at Charoti which is around 90 kms from the meeting point at Fountain. If you want to spot superbikes in Mumbai, right from the all American Harley Davidson to extremely sexy Italian Aprilia, Hotel Fountain is the place to be every Sunday morning and there is a fat chance that you might spot your dream bike. While waiting for Aldrich I met many friends from my CBR 650F group who walked up to me and wished me the best for the ride. Also, a lot of people I knew from other motorcycle groups also walked up, shared a chai, enquired about the ride and wished me the best for the ride. It is a beautiful feeling – there is hardly anything else in the world that unites people more than motorcycles. News spread that a couple of bikers from Mumbai are riding all the way to Uttarakhand, so in no time there were so many bikers coming and wishing us the best! Felt great J

Finally, our man, Aldrich arrived – in a beautiful white Revv’ It jacket, HJC helmet and a dark visor looking mean on the sleek KTM RC390 with official KTM PowerParts. Few ‘pleasantries’ were exchanged and Aldrich gave us the lamest excuse ever as to why he’s late. So finally, it was time to RIDE. We took on NH8 and our first stop would be post Charoti to have breakfast – Aniruddha agreed to ride till Vapi with us, unfortunately just 20 kms in the ride, he had a huge puncture so we had to say goodbye and carry on without him. In no time we were doing some good speeds covering distance quickly. Of course since we had a late start we had to tackle the pesky truckers who for reasons best known to them like to freakin occupy all the 3 lanes trying to overtake each other – their maximum speed being 60 kph. That broke our speed on many occasions and was bordering irritation.

We crossed Maharashtra border and decided to stop at a nice dhaba for breakfast. The breakfast was quick and we were back on the road in some 40 or 45 minutes. We wanted to make it to Modasa before the sun set so our only option was to conserve time wherever possible. Thankfully, since the Bharuch Bridge is completed we did not face heavy traffic (it was slow moving however) there although the average speed dropped considerably. Post Bharuch, we were back to doing good speeds stopping only to refuel and 10 minute butt breaks until lunch time. Lunch was in Vadava, Gujarat at Hotel Sugar and Spice (Do have their special thaali – it is delicious). We were riding constantly for around 4 or 5 hours so we took it easy, enjoyed our lunch. There was no hurry – we knew reaching Modasa before sunset would be challenging since the trucks and slow moving traffic at Bharuch killed our average speed, a quick meeting and 10 minutes later Harish proposed that it would be best if we stopped at Godhra – we all unanimously agreed.

So Godhra it was – we just wanted a place to have dinner and crash for the night so the location didn’t matter much. The ride post lunch was fast but boring with arrow straight highways right until a place called Khandiwadi – where we took a left for Halol, Kalol to Vejalpur. The road from there was special because the River Narmada, controlled by dams accompanies you for around 11 kms - running beside you. It was beautiful with sun setting at the backdrop, so we stopped to admire it. It was so beautiful and so peaceful!
The ride till Godhra then was done post sunset and we managed to find a good hotel to stay for the night. Welcome to Gujarat – awesome vegetarian food and no alcohol ensured we slept early. It was necessary to get a good night’s sleep since the night before all of us just had a quick nap and catching up on sleep was important to carry on for tomorrows ride. Tomorrow we would enter Rajasthan where non veg food would be available in abundance. Everybody was excited J
