    Re: Leh Ladakh 2018

    Day 3

Again it was barely 5 minuets and our alarm went off. Rubbing our eyes we woke up (body was resisting our efforts but somehow did it). Got ready and left the hotel by 07:30AM. Dutta decided our meeting point and we were there. Again we had to cross Delhi town and traffic was too heavy to move faster. Met Dutta at 08:45AM and left further on our journey. For breakfast we stopped somewhere near Sonipat, and we rode fast as we were already late. Drove continuously till Kiratpur sahib (border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, skipped our lunch as we were too late, though took water breaks frequently, missed our exit from Ambala, google maps again guided us correctly). At Kiratpur Sahib, had some juice and water break as our next target was Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Now the story goes interesting. Our target was to reach Manali by nightfall but situation was totally different. Why? Because of heavy traffic, when I say heavy, I really meant it, literally, when we entered Himachal Pradesh, there were thousands of trucks and we covered only 20 kms in one hour. When I say thousands of trucks, I literally mean it man, I had never ever witnessed so many trucks on one lane road. It was already 05:00PM and we were around 210 kms before Manali. Somehow I tried to console my mates to bear the traffic, it’ll soon clear up. It did but after Bilashpur in HP. We decided to reach Manali on same day, whatever time it will be. Drove continuously, with breaks of course. Reached Bhuntur by 10:00PM, had dinner there. It was clear for us that we wouldn’t reach Manali before 12:00AM. But we continued. Riding tests your physical and mental strength. We experienced that day. Body was broke, we were getting irritated but our decision was final and we were final on our decision. After long riding on bad roads, with traffic, in night, we reached Manali by 01:00AM. It was a huge relief for us. Our backside was hurting, body was screaming in protest, unloaded the bikes, went directly to our rooms, duped our bags there and went directly to bed. The rule of “Not waking up anyone” was set in place.
    Distance covered 540 Kms
Roads conditions From Delhi to Ambala 6 lane, from ambala to Kiratpur Sahib mixture of 4 lane and 2 lane. From Kiratpur Sahib to Manali, mixture of 4 lane, 2 lane and single lane.
    Ride difficulty 6

      Leh Ladakh 2018

Somewhere in HP, the road was smooth 4 lane, not for long though, but we welcomed it with open arms

                  Day 4
This was rest day, for us and our “Tashreef” too. We woke up late, by 08:00AM, went to check the famous Mall road, had our lunch. We visited local bike repair shop for general maintenance of our bikes, went to official RE showroom for some spare parts (My TBTS’s speedometer was malfunctioning) didn’t find spare cables there. Fellow Duke was having headlights problems, he had to install extra additional lights. After our maintenance duty, we headed to local market for general shopping like bungee cords, extra Jerry Cans, plastic cover for luggage and additional light snacks for the roads. We were done by 07:00PM and then we headed back to our hotel. As I said, this was our rest day, so we didn’t do much and just roamed around the city, enjoining beautiful views and different kinds of people. Had our lunch, some planning for our trip and went to bed by 12:00AM. Alarm was set again to blast at 04:30AM as we were planning to reach Pang the next day.

                                Day 5
By now you all must be knowing how we welcome mornings, with a loud growl and questions for clock, how come 04:00AM be so close to 12:00AM. Any how, we dragged ourselves from our beds, freshen up, checked out from hotel, loaded our luggage and were ready to leave Manali by 06:30AM. Everyone was fully energised, positive about today’s ride. We left the town. The day was cloudy and a bit cold. The roads from Manali town was good. Wait for it,........ we were nearing Rohtang pass, it was cold, muddy, wet, foggy and lots of traffic. Somehow we managed to cross them without any difficulties. The roads conditions didn’t improved, and we were moving too slow. By 11:00AM we were at kokshar, had our breakfast there. Now the tough part starts. We were nearing Baralacha-la. The second mountain pass we had to cross. Before Baralacha-la, we passed two big water crossing. I managed to cross both of them without much difficulties, where as my friends Dutta and Singh had already wetted there shoes and two pair of shoes. At this point, there was nothing more to worry about, other then bad roads. Now we were nearing Baralacha-la, and hints of AMS was visible on me and Singh. We reached the top, took some photos, and descended from there. At the bottom, my head was light, hurting in the middle, and I was feeling sleepy. The same effect was on my friend Singh, Dutta was not effected by any of these symptoms. We crossed so many water crossings, so many high altitude places and our conditions worsened. We had our lunch near Zing Zing bar. There we met some cyclists, they were covering Manali-Leh on cycles. We had some nice discussion. It was already approx 5:00PM. After crossing Baralacha-la, our condition was so much bad that we were not in condition to move further. By this point, Singh had vomitted, rested on road. I was having my migraine attack accompanied with AMS. So we decided to cancel our Pang target and halt for night at Sarchu. We were there by 06:30PM. We choose a tent, went directly in the room, changed our riding gears to sleeping clothes and went directly to sleep (Me and Singh, whereas Dutta was totally unaffected by any of our problems). Me and Singh didn’t even know when lights came, and when they went out. We could remember vaguely someone calling us for dinner, and we didn’t even responded to their calls. On this day, we slept straight 13 hours, didn’t had any dinner. As for Singh, he was in worse condition than me, he was vomitting the whole night. He was totally dehydrated, weak and frustrated. This night was toughest I’d ever witnessed. Now, I have done many long rides, in plains and in mountains too. I consider myself a well seasoned, experienced rider. But this ride made me feel so vulnerable and weak. I was broken inside and outside too. Anyhow, this ends in some tent at Sarchu, we two, half fainted at our beds.
