  • XBHP's skiing trip - dec 2004 (62 dayz to go)

    DEC 27th - 29th 2004 : XBHP's skiing trip.
(delhi - Shimla - Narkanda (420kms one way))

Not the perfect time for a g2g for those seeking comfort but for adventure seekers , i am organizing a g2g , higher , longer and better than the 19-20th sep one. also it will become more cold as we will move deeper into the Himalayas away from Shimla. snow will becomes our constant companion , sub zero temperatures will try to deter us but our spirits will remain high and this is what will keep us going on..

for those who love isolation, love adventures , wanna tk up challenges , this is the trip just for you.

    ABOUT NARKANDA:
on the Shimla Rampur road, famous for its picturesque surrounds and absolute tranquility is Narkanda (8936feet). The road cuts through Shimla passing through Kufri, Theog, and Fagu reaching Narkanda after negotiating a narrow, gut-wrenching stretch on NH - 22. Narkanda is 65 Kms from Shimla . Having distinction of being the highest point on this stretch, it can remain cut off from Shimla during excessive snowfalls. Alternate route is open during winters. Besides the view of Shrikhand Mahadev Peak, there is an easy 8 Kms trek to Hattu peak, accessible with a 4-WD. The peak offers some of the most spectacular view of dense forests and entire Himalayan Range across the horizon.

    CLIMATE:
In winter, the temperature drops below freezing and heavy woolens are required. During summer, the climate is pleasant and cottons / light woolens are recommended.

    WHEN TO GO:
The best months are March to November when weather is mild and pleasant, punctuated with Monsoons from June end to September. The place gets chilly from December to February with occasional roadblocks due to excessive snow on the approach road from Shimla. After opening up of the skiing facilities at Dhomri, the place is a 12 Months itinerary.
if the roads would be blocked , the alternative route thru Basantpur will be taken which goes thru some real virgin areas.

    XBHP's highest and longest g2g for 27th-29th dec'2004 is as follows :

    27th DEC :
assemble at XBHP lane at 5:00am.
proceed to bypass via ring road.
taking the usual route via Karnal-Ambala-Kalka , we will reach Shimla by 1:30-2:00pm. snow will start about an hour before Shimla and the snow peaks will be visible about 2 hours before Shimla itself!

from Shimla we will take the Shimla-Rampur highway and its after Shimla that the temp actually starts dipping below zero degrees. the roads become tough , snow all-around. very harsh conditions will prevail.

Narkanda by 4:30/5:30pm depending on the route that is open. the destination for the nigh stay

    28th DEC:
full day for free. Try your hand at skiing , lets see how many people can handle skiing and use their ass for weight-transfer lolzz
also we will explore sights like Hattu peak (10900feet)etc

    29th DEC:
the return journey starts via Kufri-Chail-Sadhopul

    WARNING :
-this trip is not for those seeking comfort. the weather , the roads will really test you and your machine.
-there will be many dangers on this trip including the killer black ice. black ice is a layer of ice which forms on the road which is invisible but if your tyre goes over it , u can easily loose control of ur vehicle.
-also we will be facing sub-zero temp very often so lot of warm clothing will have to worn n precautions to be taken.
-driving will done very very carefully coz roads in the hills in these conditions dont give u a second chance at all.
-roads do get blocked often in winters but Narkanda has been chosen because there is always this alternate route available thru Basantpur. so no need to worry.
-essentials like one warm leather jackets, inners, proper tough boots, monkey caps, warm gloves etc will have to be carried along.

-i know still 93 days are left but a lot of planning will have to be done. for ppl who went on the 19-20th trip - lowest we encountered must have been 12-13 degrees. imagine driving in sub-zeros temp for this trip.
also interested ppl can plan out for themselves right now so that other things like office/family work wont interfere in b/w the trip dates.

first of all - I m in for it.

    But :::
V have to c that roads are open or not at that time.
going in the end of november is gonna be better i think.
thats heavy snow zone area i can get stuck easily at that time and it takes 3-4 or more days to clean the roads for vehicles.

But in any case or circumstance i m in 4 it brother.

@amar - in nov, skiing wont be possible.. i know this alternate route (shimla-basantpur-narkanda).. even if the nh22 is closed , we can always tk this one.

@ashvinnadig - yup , we gotta plan early. if u r serious , gettin ur bike by a trailer truck or train r d best options. by the way , nice signature dude!!

we dont intend to ride in snow.. most of the time the roads will be totally clear coz nh-22 is a well used highway with a nice flow of traffic.. so snow on roads wont b much of a prob.. but if we decide to explore places around narkanda , places on other small roads , den we might hv to drive on snow..

                          @ken - serious ??? mazza aajega dost..

@sachin - "but plan for everything .... from illness to accidents & casualties to survival ...!!!!!" -- dont worry dude, i have planned many g2gs now.. i am used to g2gs now. i can assure u , infact give u my word , there will be no major accidents. may be some minor ones due to slipping.. forget abt casualties ( i hope u were kiddin)
