guys, nice idea for a g2g !!! A few corrections for the schedule of the g2g -- simla - narkanda is 64 kms . The road to Hatu peak is not only a 4WD track as mentioned ... any and every car can go up in the dry but if it rains even a 4WD vehicle may not make it to the top. If u guys remember some pics that i posted earlear where there was a mile stone saying narkanda in the background, that track i was on is the one leading up to hatu peak. Also there is a pic taken from a distance of the temple though its not visible.
As far as u guys catching snow is something that even the weather man cant predict ... but being a local and seeing the pattern of snowfall for the last couple of years, its a 30-70 chance that u will get snowfall !! January is when the chance of snow r more ... Also the part about skiing .well sorry to say but uness things have changed, the skiing slope has been temporarily closed as the skiing school guys felled quiet a few trees that came in the path of the slope and that too with out permission. So the forest deptt kinda put their foot down ( RIGHTLY SO ),
Another thing that u shud keep in mind is that if u not gud riders then making it from dli-narkanda in one day mite get too much. There r two things 2 take into consideration .. u planning on leaving at 5 am -- wat if theres heavy fog ? Coz if there is then depending on heavy it is or till where u encounter is will determine ur riding time till Chd. Trust me I have done this many a times so i know wat im saying .... The second thing is that if it has snowed b4 then riding time from sml to narkanda will just double . Biking on ice is not the easiest !!!!! ( WARNING --- if anyone plannig on taking their eliminator then ice is a big NO NO NO NO NO ... ) The rest r easier ..
I read on one of the posts that if sml-narkanda is blocked then take the basantpur - kingal route, as far as that goes .. tahts another very long and frustrating route so i suggest that u take another route which is the same till basantpur but instead of getting onto the kingal road u drop down till u meet the river and then u take the route along the river and u come out in Luhri ( approx 35 kms ). From luhri u carry on farther till Sainj ( 2 kms ) where u meet the Hindustan Tibet road. From Sainj u climb up to kingal ( 6 kms ) So in all from basantpur to kingal u tarvel 50 kms whereas basantpur-kingal is about 65 kms and the road is very twisty and narrow and ery heavy on the arms. There must be thousands and thousands of turns ( sharp and blind curves ). In comparison the route i suggested has lesser sharp curves and u don't need 100 % concentration.
I wud luv to join u guys but unfortunately my best friends are coming in from the US and this is their first visit since they got married there so its impossible for me to go.
Pls msg me or call me on 98117-99439 for any more info that u mite need ( where to stay, eating, etc ) ...... I'm in delhi till tuesday.
cheers

@khaddu - thx for the info and tips buddy
the road along d river to luhri didnt exist in my map, so i didnt know
-drivin in snow- - i know its gonna be risky but equally fun
-so wat if skiing is closed..we cud still enjoy urself in the snow. how abt living in open in tents sound like.. makin ur own food plus bon-fires
-the exact date-timings-route wud depend on the conditions at that time. fog will be an issue and if its there , den for the 1st day we will go till solan or something like that but it again depends on many conditions na..

@bunny , The road prob is not on the map as it opened officialy only last winters though i've been using it for the last 4 yrs almost. staying in tents in the open is a nice idea but u'll have to carry ur tents urself, so that means increasing ur load on the bike. U can remember my number and as and when u want teh exact conditions feel free to acll . I'll be glad to help in any way that u can.
cheers

its nice to hv a xbhpian who lives in himalayas.it always helps
i was actually thinkin abt a lot of things. here in delhi u get tents for 100bucks per day on rental basis. yup, carryin dem will be a prob on bikes but still we will try for that coz den it would really turn into an adventure trip. also plannin to carry packed food (by aashirwad company in which u jus gotta heat the contents and delicious food is ready). i wanna make this trip a real nice adventurous one.. hope all goes well.. still plannin though..
if u r in delhi till tuesday , can u make it for the g2g tomm at 3pm? will be gr8 to meet u..
