its heartening to see that my pics been appreciated, thanks Aryan
Harshil/ Dharali is my fav place in Hills... harshil is around 475 kns from Delhi and the route is Delhi-Rishikesh-Chamba-Uttarkashi-Bhatwari-Harshil/ Dharali... Harshil is a very scenic Valley and just opposite harshil is a small village Mukhba where Gangotri Maa is wordhipped for 6 months in winter.. from Harshil /Dharali there are many trek routes like Sat Tal, Kyarkoti etc... you need 1.5 days to reach from Delhi as 15kms of stretch is in a bad shape for Dam construction work... so day 2 you can plan to stay at Uttarkashi, and from here Harshil is just 75 kms and will take around 3-3.5 good hours
i can anytime recommend going to Harshil...
p.s foreigners are not allowed to stay at Harshil for presence of Army Camps

i have been to Gaumukh 5 times before... on 1st January i could not go due to everything covered under 5-6 fts of Snow ahead of Gangotri...
when the Yatra is open. one need not require any permission... but in winters one needs to cross 2 check posts ahead of Harshil 1) Lanks, 2) Bharon ghati ... those Gate ppl wont allow to go further till Gangotri...
for mor info, one may contact Gangotri National park office @ 01374223693 (Uttarkashi)

Guess this is the first time I am seeing Gangotri in white. Thanks for sharing the pics, Tilak!

I see that most of the shops are closed. Are all these commercial establishments closed for the winter, or it was early morning?
All men dream, but not equally. Those that dream at night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act upon their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. - T. E. Lawrence

actually pics of Gangotri in winters are very less in circulation for the reason that this place is cut from rest of the world for almost 3 months ( Dec to Feb)
it was around 17.00 hrs when i reached Gangotri and all the shops are sealed for six months and will open in May... see the beauty of this place in this video ... YouTube - WINTER RIDE TO HARSHIL-GANGOTRI

you are a bit right and bit wrong :P Kedar tal is around 20kms of high altitude trek from Gangotri and takes you to 4910 mts... not suggested for beginners for AMS... from Kedarnath also one way goes but it is much more difficult. what you are guessing may be Gandhi sarovar/Chorabari tal or Vasuki tal
Tungnath trek pics would be coming in another thread "winter trek to Tungnath"

still you are a bit wrong from Gangotri if you go straight the you get Gaumukh-tapovan-nandan van- vasuki tal
and from Gangotri temple if you go to right side you get Bhoj Kharak- Kedar Kharak then Kedar tal... the route is besides Kedar ganga
