why not fit a bigger fuel tank for the trip, might save you from carrying 1 less can of fuel.
bike might look ugly but , still fuel in tank is better than outside
You can only go as fast as you can brake!

Yes. A basic crash course would really help in building your confidence in case of a breakdown.
You have mentioned you would be carrying a puncture kit. Make sure not to carry tubeless puncture kit as your bikes are all tube type, and carry tube types, u may also carry a patch in case the tube cuts. Get a set of spanners to remove the rear tyre, that would be hardly 2 spanners for the axle nuts and one for the drum brake. Checkout how to remove the tyre from the mechs as this would help in tightening the chain at your will at any place and also if a puncture occurs and no one around, it will help.

And which tank do you prefer for that. Dude getting some other tank fitted on a different chasis is a risk if its not a direct fit. Carrying some fuel in cans would not be as tough as getting some tank and doing jugaad to fix it on your bike.

I have seen a few bullets with a bigger tank. no idea about RX though but since RX are quite mod friendly it might be possible.
can chop the sides and weld extensions rt ?

            Pratesh,

Don't feel too worried of Ladakh Trip.

Your decision to take the Srinagar route is the best decision.

Punctures occur in hills not because of nails but because of sharp stones. Hence, make sure every morning that air pressure in your tyre is optimum as recommended. I don't feel you need to change your tyres as of now since they were changed last year and must have covered around 15000 + kms so far.

Besides Bullets, Yamaha bikes appear to be favourite bikes for locals in Ladakh I don't know for what reason and hope there won't be any problem for spares.

Start early morning every day so that you have enough time to cover. If not accustomed to early morning rides, at least the three of you should make this a habit for the Ladakh trip. Also, the three of you should make at least one or two long drives.

As soon as you enter J & K, you will loose Mobile connectivity till you reach Manali, hence stay close, the three of you, as far as possible.

If you are carrying medicines for AMS, then the pill has to be taken atleast 16-20 hours before you ascend the high altitude region and once you reach Sonmarg you will be driving above 10,000 ft. for the next 8-10 days till you reach Manali.

Don't take sharp turns on hills instead take full turn and the basic rule is that you have to be in the same Gear while decending as you were at the time of ascending even though you would be tempted to go to third gear while decending but second gear would be much safer at that point of time.

Whenever you are caught in Military Convoy, beware don't try to overtake those trucks. Better, stop on the road side and let them pass. Even though it may consume some time but it is the better option.

"Don't get the crazy idea of changing the original fuel tank". Just carry enough fuel in the Cans since you are getting very low mileage (I got a mileage of 65+ with my Caliber 115 and spent Rs. 3200 to cover 3000 kms i.e. Re. 1 per kilometre).

Till then, happy and safe riding.

Pratesh - You have already got all the good tips from experienced members here. Just to add on assuming you have never ridden with saddlebags please ride once with full luggage to difficult terrains and check how your RX performs.

Might wanna try places like Rajmachi and Slope of hell which are famous amongst bikers for offroading.

Btw - Which saddlebags would fit the RX well?

Thank you very much for the tips!!

I'm actually worried on the mileage part. I got a mileage of 22 on my trip to Goa via the NH -17. The roads are not going to be any similar, atleast on the passes, and I guess I'll ned to carry cannisters right from Jammu!!

I also wanted to know which engine oil did you used? I'm currently using Mobil 20W40 (but the can says 4T). been almost 1000 KMS since the last change.

For tyres, I'm using MRF, last changed before my ride to Goa last year. The tyres ain't bad and still got some life left but will be changed before my ride to Leh. Any suggestions here?

                Many Thanks,
I had actually fixed a RD 350 tank... Needed a jugaad though. Mounting postion on frame had to be changed. But since my jugaad lasted the Raid, i guess it was good enough.

Engine Oil - Use MOTUL (Although i have used engine oil for 4Stroke on my rx too without any adverse effect)/ 2T - AGIP (Actually any 2T will be fine)

Fork oil - I just mixed some engine oil along with the regular fork oil, to make it thicker... Most of the Roads are great, and if you do not wish to go off roading, then you need not do this.

Same for tires, Dual purpose tires from MRF (moto D), incase you wish to ride over dirt/broken tarmacs / little boulders.... Else MRF nylogrip is perfect for such trips

** No prepaid roaming in J&K... You will get network upto srinagar/anantnag if you are a postpaid subscriber... Post which you better stick together

WIsh you a great fun trip ahead...

You are right Sachin, the tips here have been relly helpful!

A full servcing of the bike and a long ride during the Good Friday & Easter off's is getting finalised. Will keep you posted.

Colts seem to be a nice fit.

@MSD: The tip to review the D-I-Y Carb jetting was indeed worth a read. BTW, which saddle bags did you use?

Well - custom made Actually since was solo and also had to carry a sleeping bag along with basic tools and ration, i converted a backpack of mine into a makeshift backrest AKA saddle bag.. was a helpful trick while covering 500 kms in a day...
