My friend. Weather is heavily localized at the Himalayas. One moment it might be clear and by the time you take a turn off a peak you will find yourself battling a local storm. Summer winter have no meaning there. Your best bet to pick a time of travel is to look at historical weather conditions and choose a date. Be prepared for anything .

Your route is going to help me understand present road conditions and tweak certain routes between Hyderabad and Agra. Thank you so much and I salute your passion and resilience in successfuly and safely completing the journey. I have a zillion questions to ask you while I am preparing the next ride, however I am going to hold on to that for the moment.

Last time it took me 7 days to reach Leh from Hyderabad. Sorry if I missed this part, how many days were your journey over all excluding buffer/rest days.

    Once again, bravo!
The bad roads could take a max of 3 or even if you are snail paced , 4 hours. Rest other roads are good. Only thing is to look out for cattle on NH. The total ride was 30 days with 3 buffer days. But since we wasted abt 3 days in the initial days and also since we started the ride from halfway reversed plan , it killed more days. Overall bangalore to Bangalore was 33 days in total.

Panchakula-Solan-Shimla (https://goo.gl/maps/qHV7d) : mix of four lane and two lane ghats roads. Rough patches exist at some places once the ghat starts.

Shimla-Kufri-Theog (https://goo.gl/maps/hSQxb): average roads. Minor land slides after kufri, if its raining , can be a bit slushy.

Theog-narkanda(https://goo.gl/maps/DoZ1G):mix of broken roads and average roads.

    Narkanda-rampur(https://goo.gl/maps/yqsdY): Very good roads.

Rampur-Wangtoo-Tapri (https://goo.gl/maps/4AWkB) : First half of the stretch is very scenix and good roads. Second half is slushy, dusty and lanslide prone.

    Tapri-Reckong Peo-Pooh ( https://goo.gl/maps/Nww8O) : Horrible roads, if I can say "roads".

Pooh-Nako (https://goo.gl/maps/BNnsa): Good to very good scenic roads.

Nako to chango(https://goo.gl/maps/3FUJJ) : Mix of good and bad roads , mainly bad roads.

Chango-Tabo-Kaza( https://goo.gl/maps/e79FU): Bad roads after bad roads.

    Kaza-Gramphoo(https://goo.gl/maps/1GTAf) : Horrible roads.

    Gramphoo-Keylong(https://goo.gl/maps/jDoFd): Average broken roads.

Keylong-rohtang La-Marhi-Manali-Buhntur(https://goo.gl/maps/HeDYs): From koksar to rohtang La roads are very slushy. Rohtang to marhi : overall very narrow two lane roads combined with slush at many places. Marhi to rohtang : narrow roads in good shape.

Keylong-Sarchu-Pang-Tanglang la-Rumtse-Karu-Leh(https://goo.gl/maps/1W4Us) : Except for one small stretches before tanglang la where road construction is happening, good to very good roads overall.

Leh-South Pulu K-top-North pulu -Hunder-Sumur(https://goo.gl/maps/U2dnn): Except for bad roads from South Pulu to North Pulu roads are overall good.

Sumur-Agham-Wari la-Sakti-Leh(https://goo.gl/maps/32tYb): Good narrow roads till Agham, but have to be careful because of sand on the roads. Below average roads through wari la till sakti. Good roads from sakti.

Leh-Chang la -Tangtse-Spangmik(Pangong)(https://goo.gl/maps/hq4i4): 10 kms on either sides of changla top are bad. Rest are good roads , with occasional rough patches and depression in the roads without indications.

Leh-Upshi-Kiari-Chumatang-Mahe-Korzok(https://goo.gl/maps/9BvDh):Good roads from leh to upshi. Because of road widening, The existing road has been wiped out completely. Non existence of proper roads till kiari army base. Post kiari its good roads throughout till mahe. Post mahe , for few kms road exists. After that its only sandy trails and stones till korzok. The newly laid roads from 8 kms before Korzok towards chumur is in very good shape but not yet open for civilian movement because of tension across the border.

Leh-Fotu la-Namika La-Mulbekh-Kargil(https://goo.gl/maps/3bBGR): Till few kms after mulbekh roads are very good. Appx 20 kms before kargil is bad.

Kargil-Sankoo-Panikhar-Rangadum-Drang Durang glacier(https://goo.gl/maps/Ohafj): Very good scenic country roads till about 5 kms from Panikhar. After that its bad roads after bad roads all the way towards padum. Lots of water crossings exist too. One has to look out for sharp steel wires coming out of broken bridges.

Sankoo-Umba La-Drass-Zoji la-Sonamarg(https://goo.gl/maps/cvmJv): Sankoo umba la top can be easily done under an hour from sankoo side. The descent from top is also decent. Once you decent down you need to ride through the river to get to the other side of the mountain towards drass. The tough part starts from here. Roads become very narrow with some water crossings and slushy areas. At time it so happens that the width of the road can hardly accommodate a hatch back. This stretch is not adviceable to be done on a hatch or 2X2. Help is not available throught the stretch. Except for some BRO guys who were working on a bridge.

P.S: Gmaps doesn't recognize the road from Umba La top to Drass

Sonamarg-Patnitop-Udhampur-Jammu-Pathankot (https://goo.gl/maps/lwevG): Average to above average roads feom sonamarg to Jammu. Four laning is not yet complete from udhampur to Jammu, few diversions exist. Below average roads around lakhanpur. Truck traffic increses exponentially towards Pathankot.

Pathankot-Nurpur-Kangra- Dharmashala-Mcleodgang-Mandi-Sundernagar( https://goo.gl/maps/4VIqn) : Roads are bad around whichever town u pass through. Roads around Dharmashala and Mcleodgang are very narrow. From Mcleodganj to Mandi roads are average to Good. Some sections are very narrow for 2 Suvs to pass comfortably, so have to be very careful.

Sundernagar-Ghaghas-Darlaghat-Arki-Subathu-Dharampur-(Proceed about 5 kms on Shimla road) deviate from Kumarahatti -Nahan-Paonta Sahib-Dehradhun-haridwar-Rishikesh (https://goo.gl/maps/l0lnb): Till Ghaghas roads are good. Once you deviate towards arki, road becomes veey narrow and roads get average. Occasional bad patches crop up. Once you reach Dharampur , roads till Dehradhun are very good. Traffic increses exponentially as you get closer to dehradhun. Roads become bad post dehradhun and lot of deviations which aren't marked properly towards Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Rishikesh-Tapovan-Devaprayag-srinagar-Rudraprayag-Karnaprayag-Chamoli-Joshimath-Badrinath(https://goo.gl/maps/EDHok) : Roads are overall average to above average from Rishikesh to Joshimath. The route passes through some fresh landslides. roads around these areas are pretty bad. Apart from that its very much manageable by any mode of transport. 10-12 kms from joshimath roads are consistently bad till badrinath.

Karnaprayag-Gairsain-Chaukutiya-Dwarahat-Ranikhet(https://goo.gl/maps/CH4Yp) : Except for the 7 kms before Ranikhet roads range from good to very good. Roads before Gairsain are being relaid. Apart from this roads are very good, but very narrow.

Ranikhet-Nainital-Haldwani-Greater Noida-Yamuna expressway-Agra(https://goo.gl/maps/hiBff): Very good roads till Haldwni. Haldwani by pass is confusing without much boards. After that its chaos till four lanes which start from Moradabad. Bad roads with huge craters and all the sort of obstructcles one can imagine on this stretch. After Moradabad roads are good but constant interference from vehicles which come on the wrong way. Once yamuna expressway starts. Its brilliant roads all the way till Agra.

Agra-Dholpur- Gwalior-Jhansi-Lalitpur-Sagar-Deori(https://goo.gl/maps/OMdl6): Good roads from Agra to Gwalior by pass. Lots of Diversions on the highway as road is underway(presumeably though I didn't see any work happening) there are some pretty rough patches. Jhansi by pass is in good shape. Roads are verygood after Jhansi all the way till deori, but the only problem is it will be like riding through a cattleshed. You can see half of animal kingdom resting on the highway. Dogs/cows/langurs/goats/sheep etc etc . Pretty difficult to maintain speed. One has to always look out for animals and tractors.

Deori-Chindwara-Sousner-Savner-Nagpur- Hinghanghat- Pandharkavada(https://goo.gl/maps/vITEo): Lots of diversions till u turn right for chindwara. Road to chindwara is very good except for a fact that potholes/rough patches exist wherever there are bridges. One has to be prettt careful as they are almost camouflaged. The new road by passes most villages on the old road. Roads are bad around sousnar as there are lot of bridge construction underway and diveraions are not in good shape. Post that its good roads throughout. After hinghanghat roads are very bad for about 20 kms. After that its average roads with wide deep potholes that appear out of nowhere.

Pandharkavada-Adilabad-Hyderabad-Bangalore(https://goo.gl/maps/VbD6P): 3 kms from Pandharkavada bad roads start and extend for upto Telangana border. Massive potholes, so big that a decent sized SUV can fit in one of them. Once you cross the border its good roads to make merry all the way till Bangalore.

And I have done it. Finally rode to the dream destination of every biker! Rode to Leh in august. 3500 kms over 22 days! man what a trip it was. Absolute beauty and thrill. Leh never ceases to mesmerize people. My route was delhi-chandigarh-manali-rohtang la-jispa-sarchu-leh-nubra-leh-pangong-leh-tso-moriri-leh-kargil-drass-srinagar-jammu-amritsar-delhi. will start writing my T-log soon. The ride had its own share of misadventures and minor mishaps as well having done the most awaited ride of my life, I am back to the mundane city life, with a promise to myself and an urge deep within to do the Biking pilgrimage again next year!
