    Hi Sam

October is the most lean period for Ladakh ride. Although presently it is snowing in Leh region on high passes and if the Almighty wishes, it might also snow in October and it is the start of winter. Otherwise generally it is clear in first week of October. The roads are almost repaired by BRO after the rains. You might know that now no Inner Line permit is required for Indians, you just need to carry a valid I.D.proof with you. There won't be many bikers in October in Ladakh region.

Hope you would carry maps with you. Get your bike serviced at service centre, carry extra clutch cable accessory, spark plug, engine oil for top up, headlight bulb etc. It may get cold in October so carry necessary woolens. The gloves of good quality for Khardungla Top and Changla and Tanglangla. Don't know which you bike you are riding and which route you opt to start but for first timers Srinagar-Leh route is safe and return by Manali route.

For more details you can log on to my t'log and go through it properly. Here is the link Hoodibaba is back from Hunder and Pangong Lake - Solo ride on Caliber 115 !!!! - BCMTouring

All the best for your journey.

2007 220-Fi was fine with the fuel we topped up in Sumdo. Other bikes in our group were 200NS and the 220 carb and they were fine too. I didn't take the risk with my 390 though. Used the clean petrol from the plastic cans others had

Quality of fuel in hills are always bad,no doubt.
But I have not seen any bike stalled due to this bad fuel...carry enough fuel from petrol pump and purchase black fuel only when necessary..
But dont worry much about this fuel issue.
Try carry a filter (Jaali type thing)from Delhi to rule out any adulteration.

Do Spiti after covering Ladakh in your return journey.
Alright, I will do exactly that and will leave on 5th September. Lets see if we bump into each other. Best of luck for you ride

and for Spiti I was curious what would be better, doing it before leh or after leh ?

I guess,25-28 days long trip should be done in 50k bucks.
As far as permits for above mentioned places are always hit or miss thing and keep changing on daily basis.I am packing a complete set of formal dress specially for the permit day in my upcoming ride in first week of sepetember 2014.Seriously.
I would advise you to dress properly in a formal clothing and make yourself as presentable as mature as you can before appearing DC at Leh.
They have typical govt babu attitude and bikers are considered reckless as far permits for border area is concerened.
Waril La and Hanle have no issue and permits are being given for those places.
Chushul-M La are problems but of late i have heard that they have started issuing Chushul permits.
Entire September is fine for doing Ladakh and not doing Kashmir in your return journey is a good idea.Instead come back via Spiti while returning.
As far as solo ride goes,it is fun and inculcates a toughness and maturity and you will surely find few of your tribes on the roads and will be able to ride with complete strangers and finally becoming friends with one another.
while in Kashmir and Ladakh, dont discuss Pak/Militancy/Politics/Army/ with anyone.

I am finally thinking of not doing the kashmir leg keeping in mind the present situation there and instead do lahaul spiti while returning, does it sound like a good idea ?. How cold do you think it will be in late september and mid october ? Should I leave early i.e. after the first week of september and return by first week of october ? sorry for so many queries And I would appreciate any tips from you for riding solo in those places, you being so experienced, it will be of great help

Your expense would be between 1600-2000 rs per day,all included.
Take a note of this and carry sufficient fund .
    My two cents.
    Your Itinerary is doable BTW.
Thanks for the inputs Narender bhai. But even the late season I would need 2k per day? and this is including fuel or excluding?
