Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
@narender & @Hoodibaba and @icemang absolutely true..as i asked in the first post about whether it's possible without rushing.I wont do it in a rush, I'd rather cover less places and stay longer at each place. The funny thing is that the reason i was asking was to get an extra day and adjust for Tso moriri only :P
Btw is there any sort of link or post where I can get approximate times between two places. i'm pretty sure google maps is way too optimistic in the mountain regions.
thanks for the help till now tho :-)
oh and instead of double posting I'll just a question here..how do carry the jerrycans on their bike? I have a pulsar 220 and a viaterra claw with me currently.Last edited by forcooler; 05-23-2014, 01:15 PM.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Reading this makes me want to do the trip again. In 2012, I had taken too may clothes and have now learned that one can make do with just two sets for the entire ride duration.
forcooler. The going is very slow, approx 15 to 18 kms per hour. You will take, as narender pointed out, about 18 hours. For what? To just complete the leg? Nay, my friend, don't do that. The place is just too beautiful to ignore the sights around. And you will arrive at Pangong totally bushed and very late in the evening, too late to see the lake in all its glory.
Hunder to Pang. Pangong to Pang is a really arduous route esp the Taglang La to Pang section. I had felt that for me and my bike, this was possibly the most difficult section in the entire journey. So, why hurry and worry? Add a day or two and enjoy!

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
As Narender has already replied quite intelligently, I do second his advise.
Moreover, one doesn't have such golden opportunities to enjoy the beauty of mistique ladakh quite often.
Why make hasty retreat. I would even advise to go for Tso Moriri also from where you can go directly to Pang.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Quite right...These routes open late and are in bad condition.Originally posted by forcooler View PostThanks for the reply. My mistake that I didn't mention when I'm planning to go, I'm planning to go early June and I've read that the Wari La route might be closed/blocked this early into the season or the Shyok might be difficult/impossible to cross? So i guess the only option would be to go through leh right? Again,is that possible?
And when you say start early does that mean around 5.30-6am?
Hunder-Pangong is approx 320 kms...you can take take your call whether you can ride for 15-18 hrs or not??
From my side and experience,Hunder-Pangong in one day not advisable.
Do this section in 2 days comfortably and soak in the beauty of region.
No need to rush.

Hunder-Pangong can be done via Wari La route. You dont need to go to Leh if you take this route. It connects Nubra valley to Shakti village,en route Pangong.
Route is -Hunder-Diskit-Khalsar-Agham-War La-Shakti and proceeds to Pangong.
You can also take Hunder-Diskit-Khalsar-Agham-Shyok-Durbuk-Tangaste-Pangong.
Pangong-Pang is also possible in a day if you start early.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
^^ Looks perfect! Since you do have buffer days, you could use one of the days for bike maintenance/service too as your overall run seems close to 5k km.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
^^^Mik..Permits are still needed for Marsimik La.
It is very near to border and totally no man land.Very steep and complete off roading.
People have been turned back by ITBP even they have ILP for Marsimik la.

For Batalik road -- Permits for Dha are no longer needed so it should be good.Originally posted by INDGEM3 View PostThanks Mik..
Appreciate ur reply. if we happend to go Leh from kargil via Batalik do we need any permit?
And to visit Masimik La??
Thanks again..
Marsimek la -- I am not aware if permits are needed to go to Marsimek la (never been there). If yes, pretty sure its still going to be the case since its not mentioned in the circular.

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Thanks Mik..Originally posted by Mik View PostLooks fine to me, assuming you are doing pangong tso-karu-pang (I would suggest sarchu - its at a lower altitude)
Pang to Manali will be dependent a lot on the weather and the slush at rohtang. As mentioned, target Sarchu the previous day.
But you do have the buffer day for Shimla. After what you will have experienced in kashmir and ladakh, shimla will be positively boring. So in case you lose a day somewhere, you can drop shimla.
Here are the new permit rules. Looks like you might not need any permits.

On a different note:
I have a brand new Spartan Helios (will use it for the first time in the ride). People are advising me against wearing a mesh jacket to leh for obvious reasons. Seems like even if I do multiple layers beneath the jacket and a raincoat on top of that, won't be enough to fight the cold(?) What I am looking is if someone (from Delhi) not riding to Leh woul want to exchange my Helios with a Textile(? or leather) jacket for the duration of the trip? I would return the same when I come back to Delhi. Or is there anyone from whom I can rent a jacket. I don't want to spend a bomb on a jacket I won't be using much. A mesh generally suffices in a tropical nation such as ours.
Thanks
if u r using a tubeless do go for a tyre protectir gel dat protects the tyre from puncture and saves you time and effort..and it costs you just 1000 bugs 😉😊
