hi , i know its a bit late , but Bhakra is a great place , the vastness of the dam and reservoir is a sight to behold , my friend has a fishing lodge at the waters edge just past the dam on himachal side.(Google place mark Himachal Pradesh 177031 ‎ 26 m SW) , car takes about 8 hours , bikes around 10 hours.

Bhakara Nangal Dam is split between two states, the Dam proper is in Himachal , and the Nangal town is in Punjab.
we generally take the GT road, uptill Ambala , turn toward ramgargh , country side roads , uptill mohali outskirts , crazy ass construction there , new roads , broken roads , but that lasts for half an hour , carry on straight up to rupnagar to Anandpur Sahib and onto nangal , now there are two ways up

Punjab Side : via the checkpost at nangal town , where your vehicle is registered at the Nangal Office ( uptill 5 pm only , you`ll need your car/ bike RC and Insurance ) i guess there is a fee of Rs50 , not sure ( my friend has a local panchayat card so we are waved off) , the cars are checked , any foreigner needs his Passport.
now you hit the hills, roads are well maintained and wide enough.
there is one more checkpost , himachal side , where a quick check of the vehicle is given ( more polite than punjab guys) , papers are checked and you are waived off.
PS: alcohol is cheaper (and chances of non adultration ) in Nangal town, stock up.

for Naina Devi , there is an turn off enroute to the damm , nerve been there thou.

once you are through the himachal check post , its a 15-20 min drive to the dam, you go through the lower half of the hills and are awed by this massive concrete wall rising up.
old trucks , earth movers (mostly Russian) etc used in the construction are lying around the offices.

just before the dam is a short tunnel, and when you emerge from the darkness, the Mighty Bhakra awaits you. (ps you cannot cross the dam) , but you can stop and marvel the splendor. there are cops around but dont bother much, (no photography thou )

the alternative route is you carry on from nangal to UNA ( Himachal ) and swing around to reach bhakra ( this is longer but more picturesque , as the size of the reservoir shocks you ) plus you ride/drive around the waters edge.

fishing is a great activity there , Mahaser, carp, some sole, fishing season is during the summer , but if luck have it even winters you can land a good catch , thou its closed during the monsoon (15th aug)

(sample of a monster pulled out last year , strictly catch and release )

      I would recommed you Delhi-Solan-Shimla-Kufri-Chail-Delhi

Start at 0400hrs from Delhi. You will reach Zirakpur, near Chandigarh, at around 0730hrs. Take the highway to the hills. The new Himalayan Expressway will welcome you!
At around 1100hrs you will reach Shimla. Visit the Mall Road, The Ridge and probably the Waterfall too. Take 2-3hrs. Have lunch. Kufri is just an hour and half away. Reach there, take a hotel. There is a zoo and some local attractions visit them. Retire the day. Next day try to start as early as posdible. If you want some more, Do not take the same route. Go towards Chail. There is a fort to visit and the highest cricket ground. Brunch can be done at Sadhupul. Its a nice place, legs deep flowing water and food. Order nothing but parathas there. Head back to delhi.

Kufri is the coldest place among the listed places and in fact you will experience a drop in mercuty there but not in any other place.
I would recommend at least one more bike to accompany, just in case.
Tell me if you need any further help, I live in Chandigarh.

      Happy riding!!

Hey thanks for the input however I do not think the itenary will be possible in 2 days considering the rain and slow speeds. However if I move ahead with the same plan will try and follow the same !
Guys are there any areas in the plains close to delhi which is doable in 2 days. Wifey is not exactly agreeing to me doing the HP/Uttaranchal plan because of weather conditions. Have to keep Big Boss happy and in the loop since next month will be doing the Delhi-Kolkata-Delhi circuit

          You are welcome bro!
This part is not so risky. Anyways, as your High command says..
I can recommend places near Chandigarh.
Delhi is out of my knowledge base.

Also, from Chandigarh, I frequently do the same itinerary in a day. So, from delhi, a day more will be more than sufficient, I guess..
But do not take risks with nature, n if you plan to do this track, carry a full raincoat with u....

            Happy and safe riding!!!

For the riders from the region who value flawless stretches of curvy tarmac & are unaware of good roads apart from Himalyan Expressway & NH22 (Shimla Highway) for their fast paced rides.
This route (SH 2) starts from Kumarhatti & goes towards Nahan.

                        Salient feature of SH 2
                        1. Flawless surface & consistent in quality throughout.
                        2. Very minimal traffic.
                        3. Approx length 45 km. 75km total of which last 30 km is in under construction.
                        4. Only small settlings along the route so no interruption in traffic speeds or flow.
                        5. Perfect mix with right amount of tight turns, wide full throttle bends & straight stretches.

Please remember that the first 30km from Nahan side are still under construction & in Off road condition. So it’s advisable to turn back from about 5kms after Banahan Ki Ser , therefore practical access is only from Kumarhatti (NH22) as of now.
