+1 to it GS.. lotsa pot holes but ridable..
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Always be ready (get geared) to fall and then think of sitting on the motorcycle.

    • The bad stretch starts exactly just a few km before Haveri (when going towards Bangalore). This bad stretch lasts till Chitradurga, ie around 125-130km. It includes two railway crossings, going thru Ranibennur city, numerous diversions. I did this stretch 2 days back. Good news is that things are improving, though at a snails pace.

      • I along with 2 other mum xbhpians reached home yesterday after a 2 day ride to Chennai. Totally agree with above posts. The road between Hubli and Chitradurg is in pathetic condition. In fact as good as no roads at times. What made them even riskier were the speed breakers and gravel. Very difficult to spot and react. Also the joins where the newly laid tarmac ends and the older road starts. Give too much jerks to the bike and body as the bike jumps off them.

        • Thanks for the update guys...looks like things haven't changed from when I was there last.

@ Bunny - the conditions were like this about 2 years back...and they haven't changed much since then. I just hope my MT01 won't need a new set of fork seals by the time I reach Bangalore. I'll have to find a different route for the way back...

GS it's quite quite bad...some patches don't even have a road...& yaa about the fork seals...be ready to replace them

after 24 hrs of coming back my bike feels weird & needs a complete health check now

            • I dint face any such problems :-D
rather im used 2 travelling on such roads ,Karnataka is full of such roads , My bike's got accustomed to it.

GS- I really dont think its that much of a problem da . In the tar stretches i was doin 100-110 da. Only close to the railway tracks and some diversions , its a lot of dust .

its 127 kms , even if u do it really really slow , u can do it in 2.5 hours.

only irritating thing is the speeed breakers , slowing down from 6th to 1st is a pain .

              • Guys...in the last 3 months I have done:

                1. Mumbai to Bangalore in a Bolero
                2. Bangalore to Chennai on the MT01
                3. Chennai to Bangalore on the MT01
                4. Bangalore to Mumbai on the MT01
                5. Mumbai to Bangalore on the MT01
                6. Mumbai to Bangalore on the Karizma (single day)
                7. Bangalore to Mumbai on the MT01

I am quite familiar with the lay of the land past Hubli. I was just wondering if things have improved or gotten worse since November. I think I'll take it at snail's pace over the patchy sections.

Sigh...KA - why can't they build up these sections of the GQ faster?

                      • Can anybody help me finding the route from OOTY-MUNNAR, planning to do this in 1 day

                        OOTY-COONOOR-METTUPALEM-COIMBATORE-UDUMALAPETTAI-MUNNAR

Is there any alternate route? I want to skip COIMBATORE ... It saves lot of time.

                          • Mumbai to Bangalore via NH4 is vastly improved since the last time I was there. The bad patches are just a handful now and most of the GQ sections have been opened up for public use. I did the 1000 km ride in 12 hours non-stop. Guys on a regular Indian bike with a larger tank capacity and better fuel efficiency can probably do it in 10 hours.

Once the roads are done...I think 8-9 hours Mumbai - Bangalore is possible.

The bad patches as I remember them weren't intrusive. You just have to take it slow and keep an eye out for the large potholes and unmarked speed-breakers. I navigated the MT01 through without any issues.

Constructions seems to be happening in some sections. I see LOTS of activity in some areas...not so much in other areas. The fly-over sections over the railway tracks in two locations is still a WIP but I learnt that this was due to the Indian Railways not granting permission to NHAI. However the supervisor I spoke with briefly also said that the flyovers would be completed along with the pending sections of the GQ by May 2010.

I think this is very achievable considering how much the situation has improved in the last 2 months.
