  • Oct 15-16th I did a solo drive from Kochi to Nilambur and back along this route.

    Kochi -(Airport/Seaport Rd)-Kalamassery-Angamaly-Trichur - Kechery - Pannithadam - Perumpilavu-Edappal - Valanchery - Kottakkal - Malappuram - Manjeri - Edavanna - Nilambur.

The Airport-Seaport Road near Kalamassery is in execrable condition. Kalamassery - Trichur Road is mostly okay, with a few stretches where road work is going on and traffic pileups occur near Chalakudi.
Trichur Kunnamkulam route is excellent, but found a useful detour from Kecheri to Perumpilavu through Pannithadam. Though the road is not as wide as the main highway, this road is in decent condition, light in traffic and has good scenery. Perumopilavu - Valanchery road is in superb condition except for short stretches near Kuttipuram where road work is going on. A few more months and it would be an excellent road.

The roads have been totally good the rest of the way to Nilambur.

The return route had been like this.

    Nilambur - Manjeri - Malappuram - Kottakkal - Valanchery - Edappal - Ponnani - Chavakkad - Kodungallur - North Parur - Cheranallorr - Edapalli - Kochi.

The road till Edappal has been as described. The road from Edappal to Ponnani is only 10 kms long however nearing Ponnani the road condition is very bad. There is a better road to Ponnani immediately after Kuttipuram Bridge over Bharatapuzha that ought to be taken instead.

The NH17 is in decent condition albeit with lots of patchwork on starting from Ponnani. A very light traffic enables a comfortable ride. The road improves a few kilometers south of Ponnani and it is good riding all the way till Kodungallur. From here the roads are very narrow and there are some really bad stretches of roads near North Paravur and Cheranallur. The railway level cross at Edapalli is as usual the retardant in this road.

The two routes hardly differ in distance or pleasure of driving and have both clocked me 209kms.

    1998-2002 - Hercules TopGear
    2002-2010 - Honda Activa

NH208 from Kollam to Thirumanglam is in amazingly good condition..

Except for a Small patch of about 100 meters near Punalur the road is a Dream to ride.

But keep your speeds in check, coz they are two laned roads with lot of Rural vehicles will low levels of Road sense plying either ways.

But the roads are butter smooth..

        • That depends on which way you approaching OOTY buddy. For Eg if you are planning bangalore-Mysore-Ooty the roads are fine except for the 20km stretch from mysore-nanjangud. If you are coming from Sulthan Bathery/Kalpetta the roads are good with lots of scenic views but you will miss out on the 36 hair pin bends unless you take sulthan bathery -gundlupet -bandipur-ooty route. If you are coming from coimbatore a stretch of road im metupalayam was(a month back) under construction,Apart from that the roads are good.

            • If you are talking the bangalore-mysore-ooty route, you have two of them 1.Mysore gundlupet-madhumalai(left)-masingudi-ooty(36 hair pins)
              2.Mysore gundlupet-madhumalai-gudalur-ooty

The first route is shorter by 35 kms and more exciting with steep climbs.Right now there are no landslides but you can expect a downpour anytime,so dont forget to carry your rain gear. When are you planning to do this and for what duration??????

I came back from hyderabad to bangalore yesterday (obviously by bus). I travelled at night & that too by sleeper bus hence i cant tell you the exact conditions. But a lot of place the road was bumpy. Perhaps some sort of construction work was going on. The initial road was good. But somewhere in the middle the road got bumpy & uncomfortable.
