  • just back from a wayanad trip.
roads are bad... really really bad.
the roads to meenmutty falls (from meppadi) and then to ooty are good.
the panamaram-kuruva island route is pathetic.
the thamarassery ghat roads have gone from bad to worse than the worst.

    • had been to skandagiri near chikballapura last week by bike. watch out for a brief stretch of under construction road(or some maintainance work) approaching chikballapur i.e on NH7.......especially at night.....its hard to spot the deviation at highway speeds in the dark. I went off what seemed like a 1 foot drop in the road at 60 kmph while going towards what looked in the dark like a proper deviation.

Also be careful of highway robbers near that area especially during this new years week....we saw some bangalore kid who was beaten up bad and had his karizma stolen when we were at the chikballapur police station asking for directions.

You can say that again about the Thamaraserry ghat road. rode through that section on our RX 100 with my wife as pillion on the 18th of last month on the way to Kochi. Really shook us up and was forced to break journey at Thamarassery. Have posted a thread yesterday.

        Take care,
        Cheers

          • Yeah really sad. Its such a beautiful stretch. I used to enjoy the ride down when the road was good, lovely scenic hairpins for a great adrenalin rush! Lets hope they fix it soon.

            • Road Conditions(Bangalore-Munnar) as on Today(10/01/2011)

Bangalore-Mysore(SH-17): Good roads but one has to be careful about the occasional road humps

Mysore-Gundlupet(NH212):Good single lane roads but only after nanjangud.Look out for mad kerala bus drivers and private busses

Gundlupet-Bandipur(NH 67): Good single lane roads with less traffic. Road condition.Look out for cattle grazers who venture into the highway in no time.

Bandipur- Kothagiri: Very good mountain roads.

Kothagiri-Metupalayam:good roads with occasional road upgradation

Metupalayam-Coimbatore: Road condition is good, but seems like there is no traffic system in this part of the ride.Heavy traffic intensity. Dont be surprised if you are run over busses that honk terribly.

Coimbatore-Udmalpet(NH 209): road conditions are good, but again high traffic density. Good country roads that run into small villages.

              Udmalpet-Marayooyr:
Good empty single lane roads with occasional road upgradation in Chinar W.L.S

Marayoor-Munnar: Good roads that passes through countless patches of tea estates

              Udmalpet-Dharapuram:
Nice country roads passing through several windmills. Boring if you dont have some music playing in your ears.Baking hot if you are doing in the mid afternoons.

Dharapuram-Kangeyam: Good single lanes with almost road signs. Local help is the best help. The only direction they show is to go straight.

              Kangeyam-Perundurai:
Good single lanes with medium traffic intensity mainly contributed by trucks.

Perundurai-Salem(NH47): Straight as an arrow. Very neat.

              Salem-Krishnagiri(NH 7):
Good straight roads can maintain three digit speeds for most stretches.

Krishnagiri-Bangalore(NH 7):Road conditions are good.Slow moving trucks that cry to climb up the mountain can increase the traffic behind them.

              • Hi.
I am planning on a solo ride from Kochi to Bangalore in the second week of February and would much appreciate any updates on road conditions or any miscellaneous information that may help me along.

The route I am planning is from Kochi via NH47 through Coimbatore to Salem and from there via NH7 through Hosur to Bangalore. At Bangalore I am currently planning to take the elevated highway till Silk Board junction, turn right onto Outer Ring Road and go through Bellandur, Marathahalli and Tin Factory to Krishnarajapuram, my destination. For the onward journey I am planning to start from Kochi at 5AM and for the return, the same route by starting at 6~7AM.

I would much appreciate any feedback or suggestions on the route I have taken also any precautions to be taken.

Expect some bad stretches on NH47 between Thrissur & Palakkad; other than this, road widening work is going on at Avinashi. Other than these 2 things, you need to ask anything on road condition Simply hit the highway & keep riding safe.

                  • Madurai - Coimbatore - Ooty trip in bike

                    Hi friends,

Just completed a little trip from madurai to ooty yesterday. Here is an update on the road conditions:

Jan 28, 3:00 PM: Started from Madurai, head to samayanallur high way (Thiruparangundram - Thirunagar -university road - samayanallur high way NH7).

NH 7 (Samayanallur - Sembatti diversion next to kodai road) - Very nice road (except a PATCH road near samayanallur-madurai junction). maintained a speed between 90 to 120.

Sembatti - Otanchathram - Lots of villages in between and very average road. Cant go beyond 70.

NH 209 (Otanchathram, Palani, Udumalaipettai, Pollachi, Coimbatore) - Ok road with high traffic, most of udumalai - pollachi - coimbatore route private buses drive rashly. max speed reached - 90.

                    Reached Coimbatore around 7:00 PM.

Jan 29, Morning 7:00 AM - Started from Coimbatore, head to metupalayam road.

NH 67 (Coimbatore to Metupalayam) - Seems some road enhancement work is going on between Koundampalayam and Periyanikenpalayam. Extremely dusty road due to heavy traffic and enhancement work in progress. Cant go beyond 40. Heared that lots of accidents are happening in this road at night time due to less lighting, heavy dust and sand path inbetween. Hope the work will complete soon and looks a real NH!

Metupalayam - Ooty - Neat road. Ghat road was bit risky to drive.

                    Reached Ooty around 9.30 AM.

Roamed around ooty with friends, places like rose garden, botanical garden, lake, dodabetta.

Started to Coimbatore around 5:00 PM in the same Metupalayam route (I was thinking to drive in kothagiri route, but finally decided to come back in same route).

                    Reached Coimbatore around 8.30 PM.

Jan 30, Morning 9 AM: Started from Coimbatore and this time in a different route as high traffic in Pollachi - udumalai route.

NH 67 (Coimbatore - Sulur - Palladam) - Very nice road and can drive in high speed with less risk. Maintained a speed between 80 to 100.

Palladam - Dharapuram - Was surprised by seeing the road quality. Really a good road and not caught up in a single traffic in this stretch. lots of villages and some wind mills. really good to drive.

Dharapuram - otanchathiram - Again a good road to drive and with no traffic.

Otanchathiram - Sembatti - Average road.

Sembatti diversion - Madurai - Racer road

                    Reached Madurai around 12 noon.

NH66 from Krishnagiri is pretty bad.
I think you'll be better off going via NH46-NH4 and then turning south.
