Till Mangalore you can take NH 48 as it is newly laid. Ghats have been repaired and its a beautiful strech to go now.

From Mangalore till udupi the road widening is in progress, but still you can go.. If not Mangalore-Karkala-Udupi can be done

The road conditions are a bit average till Karkala, past that good single lanes, the ghat have also been reconditioned a bit ( dont know how long it stays like that). The distance is the same if not +/- 10-15 kms.

Is there anyway i can skip shakleshpur, i have heard that the roads are really bad on that ghat

    • Dear,

I have rode from Mangalore to Bangalore last week and this was the road condition then!

I seriously don't think the road would have gone bad in last one week!

Dude, From Bangalore go to Nelamangala take LEFT towards KUNIGAL. Keep going straight and you will reach Chennarayapatna. After chennarayapatna approximately 10 kms you will find KAMAT UPACHAR on right hand side. It is a ideal point for break. You can find INDIAN OIL petrol bunk also. Refuelling can also be taken care.

From there keep going straight and another 30 more km you will reach HASSAN. TAKE BYPASS ROAD ONLY. DO not enter HASSAN City has it might be bit confusing for first time goers.

From HASSAN - BALUPET _ SAKLESHPUR. From here the GHAT starts.. you will enjoy riding in the corners amidst the speeding Bullet tankers and KSRTC buses.

Enjoy your ride through the ghats by taking enough breaks! Enjoy the nature, You will reach GUNDYA. This is where the forest department Ccheckpost is there. Keep going straight. Taking LEFT in GUNDYA will take you to KUKKE SUBRAMANYA TEMPLE!

Keep proceeding further and you will reach NELYADI and then UPPINANGADI. From here MANGALORE is 55 kms.

Let me know if you need route from Mangalore or any other informations.

                  Thanks in advance.

the roads are awesome from kannur(cannanore) to thalassery. After that upto, calicut roads are pretty awful for bikes. Its like patchworks were made every 4 or 5 metres. highly uneven.
Roads from calicut to trichur are good but narrow. And beware of bus drivers in this route. You won't find such insane drivers anywhere.
From trichur to cochin, the roads are a bliss.

                  no idea about the rest

The Calicut - Trichur road from Kottakkal onwards is awesome now!! 4 lane speedway all the way till Kunnamkulam. Kunnamkulam - Trichur stretch is of course narrow and heavily crowded so I would suggest you take the Pannithadam - Kechery bypass.

Thanks Guys. My aim to reach Munnar as early as possible from Bekal. While checking google map, i found the route via Palakkad. How is the condition of that ? Can I reach quicker than the earlier stretch ?

In the Palakkad - Pollachi - Marayur - Munnar route, I have heard that bikers are restricted from travelling in the Marayur - Munnar stretch due to dense forests and wildlife.

I have heard that there are restrictions in timing and number of bikes permitted in this stretch. Not sure though

There is no such restriction on this route buddy.I have done this route twice in the past four months. Moreover Munnar-Marayoor stretch is usually populated by tourists who come to see Sandalwood forests just before marayoor.

                            • Bangalore tO BR hills and Back

                              Bangalore-Maddur-Malavalli-kollegal-Br Hills

Bangalore-Maddur-- As all know , boring good roads.
Maddur-Malavalli- 30 kms of Suspension testing road.. Its all messed up.AVOID it. Not that you cant ride , But cant go fast and a million shifts . Spoils the riding fun.

Malavalli-kollegal . Good nicely laid flat roads .

from kollegal there are 3 routes to BR hills

                              Kollegal-Br hills SHort Cut-30kms
                              kollegal-yellandur-Br hills- 49kms.
                              Kollegal-Yellandur-Chamrajngr-60 kms or so.

                              Kollegal-Br hills SHort Cut-30kms. I took this .
Now the roads are good. 30 kms Just takes about 45 mins as its small roads passing through villages.
There was a time when Our old Xbhp group did this and it took us more than 2 hours .
Sign at the Br hills checkpost and the forest starts.
and head towards the temple on the hill.

Br hills-Kgudi 18 kms through the forest. Good roads.

Sign again at the Kgudi checkpost and then head towards .
kgudi to Chamrajngr.. Roads are bad , But ok , Scenery also get drier .

Once you descend , you get a check post. 5kms after that there is a town( Nagavalli in Google maps) But thats not the local name.

Take a right to Yellandur from there.. Ok ish roads , Potholes here and there.

                              Yellandur-Kollegal 19kms Very Good roads

                              kollegal-Malavalli- Good roads

Malavalli-Kanakpura road : if you guys are planning to ride in the night , make sure you have Proper lighting like Hid's or whatvr u want.
Stock lighting will be BS. The Road is pitch dark with no lane markers or paint strips and no reflectors.
2 lane road , with oncoming traffic.
But the good part is that the road is GOOD finally. No potholes in the 102 kms from malavalli to Bangalore.

                              • Hello guys......

had a trip to Vijaywada yesterday nite...........

the road condition out there is very very pathetic. And the damm traffic...
took me 7 hrs to cover 250 km..

The whole 180 km of the route is being developed into 4 lane (god knows when would it be completed) and there are a whole lot of diversion and at every diversion there is traffic jams. not to say the speeding busses, it seems to them that they own the route and that we are just out of place.

Waiting for the road to complete so that the riding quality improves...
                                Gone By The Wind....
