    Route 1: Blr-Mysore-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Masinagudi/Gudalur-Ooty-Kotagiri/Coonoor-Metupalayam-Coimbatore

    Route2: Blr-Kanakpura-Chamarajnagar-Sathyamangalam-Metupalayam/Annur-Coimbatore

    Route3:BLr-Hosur-Dharmapuri-Salem-Bhavani-Avinashi-Coimbatore

Route1 and 2 is scenic(to some extent) Route 3 faster access to Coimbatore. The last 50-60kms from coimbatore from whichever route you travel is slow due to road widening process, lesser compared to the Annur route.

      • Coimbatore - BLR

        Hi EDLV,

I jus rode from CBE to BLR. Take route 3 from Phanikar if you are looking for a fast route. But beware, the stretch between Nilambur (near Coimbatore) and Sengapalli (after Avinashi) is under construction and handles a lot of heavy vehicles.

You can take the sathy road from CBE - reach annur - take the road towards avinashi. This will help you avoid most of the bad stretch, but will add some 20km to your trip. Once you reach Sengapalli, it is a 4 lane highway till Bangalore. You will be slowed down near Dharmapuri - road widening.

        So, u can do:
        1. CBE - Avinashi - Salem - Krishnagiri - BLR > if u r OK with the 30+ km bad stretch or
        2. CBE - Annur - Avinashi - Salem - Krishnagiri - BLR

I always use route 1 and it took me 5.5 hours this morning

        Gokul

            • I am planning for a ride to Goa for next week. I know the road condition from Kozhikode to Kannur and from there to Kasargod. So I would like to bypass The route and instead take the Kalpetta,Tholpetty route which will take me to Manglore.

I have no idea about the road condition and if there is anyone here who have ridden the road, Please share the condition details..

If the road is no better than Kannur route, then I will be taking Salem,Banglore, road ...

And I am starting from Trivandrum...

                  • Feb 18th 2012 - Bangalore to Hampi Route Update

For the information of fellow bhpians
Did a trip to Hampi over the Feb 18th to 19th weekend. I took the following route

                    Bangalore - Nelamangala - Tumkur - Hiriyur - Chitradurga - Hospet

Bangalore till Chitradurga is a superb 4 lane road with 4 to 5 toll booths enroute. Not much places for stopping though (i.e. Food places, pee breaks)

Chitradurga to Hospet is around 180 kms with about 60 kms of bad patches in between (especially the last). Also there is heavy truck traffic on this route. On the bad patches you will be able to main speeds to 40 to 50 kms.

                    Have a safe journey

                    • Bangalore - Tiruvanamali

Did road trip from Bangalore to Tiruvannamalai 3 weeks ago. I wish I knew about this forum before I started.

google maps show the best route as Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Tiruvannamalai. abt 200kms. Bangalore to Krishnagiri is great road. we started from yeshwantpur-tumkur road-nice expressway-hosur-krishnagiri. The road was really great and we did this 120kms in about 2.5hrs with breaks. The nightmare begins after krishnagiri. 60kms of horrible stretch where sometimes you really have to come to 5kmph to navigate. It took us almost 2.5hrs to do the 80km and there are couple of deceiving pot holes on a nice stretch. I almost thought wheel rim was broken.

While returning, we chose tiruvannamalai-Velore (80kms of decent road. u can easily go at 80-90) and Velore to Bangalore is a dream road :-) even though this is longer by 80kms, this is better and you will save on time.

                      • Road conditions as on 04/03/2012

                        Route: BANGALORE-MYSORE-BANDIPUR-MASINAGUDI-OOTY-MANJOOR-MULLI-KARAMDAI-COIMBATORE-POLLACHI-UDMALPET-CHINAR WLS-MARAYOOR-MUNNAR-TOP STATION-DEVIKULAM-POOPPARA-KALLAR-VANDANMEDU-THEKKADY-VAGAMON-KALADY-ANGAMALY-THRISSUR-SHORANUR-ANGADIPURAM-MANJERI-MUKKAM-THAMARASERRY-KALPETTA-SULTHAN BATHERY-GUNDLUPET-MYSORE-BANGALORE(1450 kms)

Bangalore-Mysore-Gundlupet: Good throughout, with surprise speed breakers at some places

Gundlupet-Bandipur-Masinagudi-ooty: Road conditions have deteriorated from Gundlupet till Bandipur, but very much rideable. post Bandipur its good all the way till Ooty.

Ooty-Lovedale-Manjoor-Mulli-Karamadai: Twisties unlimited Expect 10-15 hairpins till manjoor and 43 till dhayanoor. Completely traffic free, civilization very minimal, fantastic ghat roads. At some places the roads become very narrow so much that only 1 bus can pass through. No help what so ever till Dhayanoor. If entering upper bhavani (Which requires Prior Permission) add 10-15 more hair pins

Karamadai-Coimbatore-Pollachi-Udmalpet: Traffic density becomes exponentially higher. Except for 3-4 places the road widening on Karamadai-CBE stretch is almost complete. Good Single lanes thereafter but densely populated towns slows down the ride.

Udmalpet-Anamalai-Chinar-Marayoor-Munnar : Road conditions have slightly deteriorated post Anamalai Checkpost and also post marayoor, but very much rideable.

Munnar-Top Station-Munnar: Bliss to ride, At some places where there is tree felling in progress will slow down a bit, but fantastic stretch of tarmac.

Munnar-Devikulam-Pooppara-Kallar-Vandanmedu-Kumily-Thekkady: Good roads and never ending stretch of greenery to give company.

Thekkady-Vagamon-Muvattupuzha: One can become twisty sick after some time. One cannot find a straight stretch of road anywhere in between. The road conditions are very good but the road sense of the people using this road lack infinitely. At places has the potential to be very dangerous.

Muvattupuzha-Kalady-Angamaly-Thrissur-Shoranur: Good roads again, but lack of road discipline. Traffic increses exponentially at Kalady and Angalamly. From Angamalay till thrissur good four lanes. Thrissur - Shoranur, virtually hell to ride , especially at night. "ZERO" road sense. you will not even realise that a bus mowed you down.

Shoranur-Angadipuram-Arrecode/areacode-Mukkam : Good Roads throught. An early morning start from Shoranur till Mukkam is a bliss to ride. Road conditions good throughout.

Mukkam-Thamaraserry-Kalpetta-Sulthan bathery: Fantastic roads from Mukkam till thamaraserry. freshly laid ghat roads will ensure that it will be one of the best ghat riding/driving experience one can have. Enter Kalpetta the roads are contrast, the rough patches are camouflaged by tree shade , so one has to ensure they don't fall into potholes.

Sulthan Bathery-Gundlupet-Mysore-Bangalore: Roads start getting better on the KA side of the stretch. Post Gundlupet, the roads are good throughout, but traffic is a killer if travelling on a weekend

My Sincere suggestion , post day 3/4 , everybody will be drop dead tired, considering the time of the year you will be stepping into. And regarding the "Riding Wonder" route, anybody who have done this route would agree on " Coorg is nice, Ooty is nice, Munnar is nice, nothing in between". Since you are from Kerala, i need not tell you about the humidity. Anything above 250-300/day for 12 days in a group straight is hard to do. And except for day 1/2/11/12 you will be riding through densely populated towns/cities which most it is connected by single lanes. So kindly think over.Even if you do the above route, it will be done just for the heck of it and you will not enjoy the ride .

Valparai and Nelliyampathy are not too far off from Coimbatore.
Not sure why you'd want to ride to calicut. There's nothing much to see and the roads are narrow.
