  • Trip Query! Bangalore - Shimoga - Chikamaglur - Bangalore

    Hi Guys,

I am planning on a trip to Shimoga, Chikamaglur around the 1st of May. Which would be the best route? Also, if we plan to go to Goa instead of CKM from Shimoga, are the roads good enough for ride? Number of days in hand is 3.
Bikes: FZ, R15 and CBZ Extreme..

    Thanks

    • Update !

Hi guys, a quick update on Mettupalayam - CBE route. The road widening is almost 90% over and 2 lanes are now 4 laned. so it will be swift and will be time saving to take this route. so BANG - CBE trips will be be fun filled as an alternate relief from taking the 'monotone' Salem - Darmapuri highways route to and fro BANG - CBE. ENJOYYYYYY !

If you are planning to Goa from Shimoga , you can take :
        Shimoga-Sagara-Mavingundi-Siddapura-Sirsi-yellapur-Anshi NP-Canacona(Goa)

Roads are good throught , except for arouns Sagar and KAR border. If you are doing BLR-GOA for 3 days , not worth , unless it involves night riding

Just traveled in this road a week ago! there is nearly 5km of stretch to be completed and the four lane is only till half way upto mettupalayam. after that the road is double lane with high traffic though its condition is pretty good!

          • Updates as on 09/04/2012

            Route taken : Bangalore-Tumkur-Sira-Chitradurga-Harihar-Hubli-Belgaum-Khanapur-Anmod-Mollem-Panaji-Mapusa-Mandrem-Calangaute-Panaji-Margoa-Canacona-Karwar-Ankola-Yellapur-Hubli-Harihar-CHitradurga-Tumkur-Bangalore(1515 Kms)

Bangalore-Hubli-Belgaum: Part of GQ, so good on the whole. However lot many deviations due to six laning at certain sections.

Belgaum-Khanapur-Anmod-Mollem: Very patchy with potholes wide open at certain places

Mollem-Panaji-Mapusa-Mandrem: Road conditions are good overall

Mandrem-Margoa-Canacona: Good roads overall. The road truly blossoms post Margoa and is very good till the Goa Border

Karwar-Ankola-Yellapur-Hubli: Fantastic roads, both on the plains and the ghats. The entire stretch is beautiful.

            • Update on TVM-Athirappilly-valparai-munnar-tvm route

Recently i was on the above mentioned route with a few friends from work.
              The roads are noticeable better.
The stretch from Athirappilly to Valparai just got a new surface and baring a 5-10 km stretch is paradise. Great scenery and good curves with very little traffic.

                • NH7,NH205 and NH40 road conditions

Yesterday we came from 4 days of Andhra exploration on bikes and the route was Hyd- Ananthapur- Kadiri - Horsley Hills - Angallu- Rayachoti- Kadapa - Myudukur - Gandikota - Tadipatri - Yadiki - Gooty - Hyd.
As always NH7(Hyd- Ananthapur) was butter smooth. From Kadiri to Madanapalle route was decent (without any divider) . From Angallu to Rayachoti initial 5-10 kms are troublesome and are full of potholes. But after initial 5-10 kms, route uptil Kadapa via Rayachoti is decent. Post Kadapa construction work is going on NH40 till Nandyal.

Best spot is to meet at hassan and drive the hassan belur route together , this route is very scenic [i went in mansoons] . See the belur temples and head to chikmaglur stay night there and next day head to k'gundi via mulliyanagiri , baba budiyanagiri and k'gundi. on way back you can come through other route . Njoy the trip see the link for routes

                    • Route : Bangalore-Kanakapura-Kollegal-Yellandur-BR Hills-K.Gudi-Kagalvadi-Honganur-Yellandur-Kollegal-Bangalore.

                      Banagalore-Yellandur: Good Single lanes

                      Yellandur-BR Hills- K Gudi: Brilliant ghat/forest Roads.

K Gudi- Kagalvadi Junction: Road Quality is Good. One has to be careful with loose gravel on some corners and Road humps which spring out of nowhere.

Kagalvadi-Yellandur: Very bad roads. Speeds of -20-30 Max.

                      • Guys .. i and a few friends are planning to go to Pondicherry from Bangalore.
                        So i found the shortest route is BANGALORE-> HOSUR -> KRISHNAGIRI->MATHUR -> CHENGAM -> THIRUVANNAMALAI -> VETTAVALAM -> VILLUPURAM->PONDICHERRY (294 Km)

I dont know the condition of this road ; also we shall probably start our journey on friday evening and return on sunday. So if we drive at night how much safe this road is ?

                        I need your valuable suggestion.

                        • Chennai-Krishnagiri : 6-lane road works around vellore-ambur, watch out for diversions..
Avinashi-Coimbatore: Road works still in progress near avinashi, watch out for bad roads and rash private buses.
Coimbatore-Mettupalayam-Ooty-Gudalur: traffic towards ooty (due to flower show)
Bandhipur-Gundulpet-Chamrajnagar: Better roads passing to villages, watch out for cattle and local motorists.
Chamrajnagar-Bannari-Satyamangalam - excellent scenic road, excellent ghat road before bannari, watch out for never ending corner IIRC its the hairpin # 21, watch out elephants during the forest drive.
Satyamangalam-Puliampatty-Annur: excellent roads, watch out for dangerous curves..

                          • Hey Folks!
Recently finished a pretty long ride from Pune to Kerala and back. This was the route:

                            Pune-Bangalore-Mysore-Payyanur-Mangalore-Kumta-Dharwad-Pune

                            Here are the updates:

                            1. Pune-Bangalore: NH4 - Brilliant roads throughout. Single Lane between hubli and dharwad. Quite a few diversions between chitradurga and tumkur.
                            2. Bangalore - Mysore: SH 17 - Pretty good roads, but lots of traffic and many unexpected speedbreakers
                            3. Mysore-Payyanur: This was through Mysore-Hunsur-Gonikkoppa-Irrity-Talipramba-Payyanur. Mysore - Hunsur is very good, but Hunsur - Gonikkoppa is pretty bad. Roads then improve and stay good till the end.
                            4. Payyanur-Mangalore-Kumta: NH17(now NH66) throughout. Pretty good roads, expcept for a few short bad patches. Surathkal-Kundapur has lots of diversions.
                            5. Kumta-Dharwad: NH62 - Extremely good roads. Relaying of roads is just getting done in some parts
                            6. Dharwad - Pune: NH4. brilliant.

                            Ride Safe folks!
The more you know, the more you know how less you know.
The less you know, the more you think you really know!

Pune to Payyanur and back! 3 days on the road!

Is this the best available route ?

That's the route. One month back, inbetween Vadakkencherry and Mannuthy the road was in pretty bad shape (This stretch is the second half of Palakkad - Thrissur route).
After Mannuthy, it's a four lane road till Cherthala. In the Cochin - Alappuzha stretch beware of Police cameras. In kerala max speed limit for 2 wheelers are 50kmphr... lols. If it's a mobile unit they will stop you. But if it's a fixed camera, I guess you dont need to worry as they are not going to trace you as your bike is not Kerala registrered.
One more thing is that, it's going to be raining from June (24 x 7). So be prepared for that.
                                Happy riding.
