You will be going through Coorg. The roads are mostly fine except for a few stretches, but really scenic. From Mattannur take the highway towards Thalassery.

    • If any one is going to thalassery or kannur by this route then there is a new road of about 6 to 7kms made. The road from Gonikoppal to irritty. you dont have to go to virajpet now, and also save time and tyres :P i wish there were good roads from gonikoppal to periyapatna. horrible roads. • Bangalore to Tumkur : Fourlanes nothing to fuss about.

Tumkur-Tiptur: Once you change over from NH4 and get to NH206 have to be a bit careful about the Potholes. Once you are on NH206 its a sail.

Tiptur-Kadur-Bhadravathi-Shimoga-Sagar: "ALL" patch sections has been completely relaid.

Thalaguppa-Siddapur-Sirsi-Sonda: Fantastic roads, except for the first few kms post Thalaguppa junction.

        Sonda -Jog Falls : Brilliant.

        Jog Falls-Sagar-Tarikere: Overall Good.

        Tarikere-Lingadahalli-Chikmagalur-Hassan: Good Stretch of tarmac.

Hassan-Bellur Cross: Pain in the wrong place if you are doing it in the night. Most diversion signs dont Exist now. More so at many place the diversion is on the other side of what it used to be earlier.

Bellur Cross-Bangalore: Good, well marked four lane roads.

        • ^^ some of my relatives live in Shimoga, Bdvt, always told me roads are at its worse, glad to see they've patched up the road. Cruisable or caution needed?

          Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
          The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Madikeri - Virajpet- Gonikoppal - Kutta is road is always in shatters, but, if I were you, I wouldn't hesitate to take it on account of the superb scenery

After that, Kutta - Mananthavady - Kalpetta - Sultan Bathery/Meppadi - Gudalur - Masinagudi - Ooty - Mettupalayam - CBE are in good shape as usual

                    • I am planning to drive from Puttur (Dakshina Kannada) to Kumarakom sometime in late April. Google map shows me NH17 as the fastest option. Is this the best route to take? My priority is good roads with good (veg) eating options

I also heard traffic in Kochi bumper to bumper! Any way around this?

Post number 3 is worrying me.

                      • Update on Hosur to Hogenekkal route through Denkanikottai (March 2013):

Hosur to Anchetty is super smooth, scenic and biker friendly. Few villages on the way, very less traffic.

After Natrampalayam, craters appear for a 2km stretch. But this road is being laid fresh from the Hogenekkal side.

Most probably, the entire stretch from Denkanikottai to Hogen should be super smooth in some months' time!

                        • Did this route in the car over the last weekend.

Bangalore-Gundlupet : Same old story. Overall good rideable conditions.

Gundlupet-Sulthan Bathery : Very good two lane roads, the few rough pathches has been completely relaid till KL RTO Checkpost. Thereafter its roller coaster ride if there in a car, more so in a hatchback.

Sulthan Bathery -Beenachi-Kenichira-Kuruva Dweep: Fun to ride narrow roads. Though road conditions are good one has to be very careful about the oncoming vehicles. The roads are so narrow that A bus and a hatchback has to slowdown to pass comfortably. Same implies to Beenachi-Panamaram-Mananthavady route

Mananthavady-Kutta: beautiful roads till KL border, starts becoming pathetic with every Km travelled inside KA. Kutta-Hunasur route, two wheelers are not allowed posting it only if you intend to drive through : surprise potholes every now and then till Hunsur.

                          Hunsur-Yelawala: Good roads overall.

Yelawala-Srirangapatna: Dusty, dusty (slushy if it rains) combined with potholes for the last 10kms till it joins BLR-MYR road.

Srirangapatna-Bangalore: Good four lane roads with some surprise road humps (Translate surprise to 57 road humps from BLR-MYR)

Just last week, I was on the same route to my aunt's house in Coorg. Good roads. But Panamaram to Kenchira roads are good, but lots of bumps. Kutta road was worse just months back and now they're in the plan of extending the highway and Kutta road. Boy I still imagine, 16 KMS of pure hell close to a year back. The week before I was so confused that am I on the right road, the govt is extending the road and making them a a highway, Kutta, Koleri, Ponnampet.

                            Cheers!

Kutta road extension from which side ????? I didnt see any construction goin on. The Mananthvady Kutta road was done long time back. I guess you are referring to Gonikoppal route which is still in shambles at many places. The Nagarahole route was not that worse anytime.

Yes thala, the Gonikoppal route via Ponnampet. It was worse than hell just a year back. Now you can see full of road rollers and trucks all along the way. And I was so convinced I was off track and happen to ask a localite is this the correct route, and yes it was. My uncle said that they're expanding the roads in ponnampet Kutta area and there was even a big hoopla last week when JCBs demolished most shops that were operating there, even with notices served, these guys were adament, and they all demolished without no ****s given attitude. Asked why, they said, they are expanding the road making it a highway.

                                Cheers!
