hi all..im planning to go for shimoga jog falls this coming september 7th. Have 3 day holiday i.e. saturday, sunday & monday.
So thought utilising it to the full extend.
I chekced the routes in Google. It shows 2 routes:
    1. Bangalore-Honavar road --> 385km
    2. AH 47/NH4 --> 438km

    Which is better route??
which route has better roads & scenic beauty??

NH 206 is more scenic and shorter by some 20-25kms, not by 50kms. But not faster as compared to NH4 as it crosses through every town possible on the way. Road Conditions are good overall on both roads, Roads from Jog falls to Honnavar was broken few months back at small patches , rains might have made it worse(May be). NH206 is two lane roads all the way till Honnavar.

        • Shiradi Ghat condition update

Shiradi Ghats condition as on 18th August 2013 is bad. Tar has come off unevenly and has created drop-offs for 2-3ft deep. Terribly patchy surface. I could drive only at 20kmph on my car for most of the stretch.

I prefer the Honnavar road if i'm riding it but roads near Tiptur have become degraded due to rain, the rest is superb all the way to Jog. I've also taken NH 7 to Chitradurga and turned left towards Channagiri and Shimoga (green beautiful scenery among undulating hills on the chitradurga Shimoga Rd and the last time I went on that road (Aug 3rd 2013) the surface was excellent...

Anyone know the latest road condition of NH 17 (Kochi to maybe upto Karwar)? Are the roads constructed back near Munnar, Kerala? after the heavy monsoon and landslide issues they had in the area? Thanks guys

              Route : Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur-Nilambur-Pandikkad-Shoranur-Thrissur-Aluva-Allapuzha-Angamly-Athirapally-Valparai-Pollachi-Sutanpet-annur-Metupalayam-ooty-Masinagudi-Gundlupet-Mysore-Bangalore.
              Map: http://goo.gl/maps/t8HL1

Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur: Four lanes with abrupts and surprise road humps at regular intervals.Mysore to Gudalur two lane roads in good condition. Watch out for those cattle grazers who let their cattle free on the road to graze.

Gudalur to Nilambur: just one suggesstion, look out for elephants and ride/drive carefully We encountered(rather could see, as we rode during the night) around 30-35 elephants at diff locations on Theppakadu-Vazhikadavu Checkpost. Have done this stretch few times during the day, night its a different story altogether. DO NOT HONK/FLASH LIGHTS. STAY ON LOW BEAM.

Nilambur-Pandikkad-Shoranr-Thrissur: Good and Narrow roads. Distances can be covered in quick time if riding/Driving during night. Day times, its mayhem everywhere.

Thrissur-Aluva-Chertala-Alapuzha: Good four lane roads, with Speed cams till Aluva. Post Aluva its like 1 foot deep potholes in the middle of properly laid roads. Can definitely damage your tyres. It comes as a complete Surprise. Post Chertala, its chaos again till Alapuzha. Its like Darwin's Theorey of "Survival of the fittest" was based on KL roads rather than Finches. Insane driving everywhere.

Alapuzha-Angamaly-Valparai: About 3-4 kms [post Angamaly, there is a board which reads "Athirapally turn left". its just 25kms from this junction, rather than around 45-50 going via chalakudy. First few kms of roads are very good, deteriorates, but still good enough. It leads to Plantation Corporation of Kerala Check post which is "Supposedly" open from only 6AM to 6PM. Roads are broken till you meet the Chalakudy Athirapally road.

Athirapally-Valparai-Pollachi: Roads from Vazhachal to Malakkappara are good for the first 20-25 kms , post that its all broken roads till malakkappara Check post. Post that its good till Pollachi.

Pollachi-Sultan pet-Karumathampatti-Annur-Metupalayam: Its about 10-15kms more than the conventional POllachi-Coimbatore-Karmadai-Metupalayam road, but definitely faster. Roads on the Sultanpet roads are good two lane roads, with very less traffic.

Metupalayam-ooty-Masinagudi-Gundalpet: Overall Good two lane roads.

                      Route

Bangalore-Kanakapura-Malavalli-Kollegala - 2 lane, good roads. Trucks and KSRTC are your enemies.
Kollegala-Hanur-Male Madeshwara betta- Single lane, good roads but beware of cattle and sudden potholes. (ghat road has been relaid and in superb condition now)
Male Mahadeswara betta - Kolathur - Mettur - Mecheri-Thoppur - Downhill till KA border is Patchy but not much of problem for bikers. Once you enter TN , its super smooth all the way till Thoppur.
Thoppur-Dharmapuri-Krishnagiri-Hosur-Bangalore - 6 lane work is still under progress in some parts. Heavy traffic as always.

                        14th September 2013:

Roads near and around Kollegal, Chamarajanagara, Mysore, Nanjangud, Bangalore - Mysore, Malavalli, Kanakpura kn South Karnataka all impressive... Even the State Highways. Pleasantly surprising especially after being thrashed by such a heavy monsoon.

                        Cheers All.

                          Route Taken : Bangalore-Hubli-Belgaum-Kolhapur-Belgaum-Jamboti-Sanquelim-Ponda-Majorda-Agonda-Palolem-Majali-Karwar-Honnavar-Jog Falls-Shimoga-Kadur-Tumkur-Bangalore

Bangalore-Hubli-Belgaum-Kolhapur: Four lanes throughout with some sections of 6 lanes. No diversions exist now till Hosa Kadro halli and MK Hubli, where construction of bridges are underway.

                          Belgaum-Jamboti-Chorla:
Brilliant roads, A hundred times better than Khanapur route. Completely relaid roads with markings and reflectors, could be densely foggy at times.

                          Chorla-Sanquelim:
Broken roads at few places , mainly because of small landslides and heavy rains, otherwise its fine.

                          Sanquelim-Ponda-Majorda:
Good roads throughout, very minimal traffic till you connect to NH17 at Margoa.

                          Majorda-Benaulim-Varca-Cuncolim-Agonda-Palolem:
In case you would like to avoid NH17, very good but roads, with cars flying on it. Ghats before canacona are brilliant to ride/Drive.

                          Palolem-Majali :
Good roads again, If your vehicle is running on Petrol, the tank up at the HP bunk, just half a km post the “Fees Gate”

                          Majali-Karwar-Ankola-Kumta-Honnavar:
Till few kms behind of Honnavar, roads are completely relaid and is in fantastic shape even after the rains. Hope the rest of NH17 attains this state soon.

                          Honnavar-Gerusoppa-Jog Falls :
Superb roads again, the broken patches around gerusoppa has been patched up and is in good condition.

                          Jog falls-Shimoga-Kadur-Gubbi-Tumkur:
Good roads till few kms post gubbi. Odd potholes pop out of no where at few places past Gubbi. Have to be very careful if driving/Riding at night.

                          Tumkur-Bangalore:
                          Overall Good roads.

                          • Chennai - Tirupati - Chennai

                            Hi all,

Was planning to visit tirupati/tirumala this month (from chennai). Any suggestions on the best route as on date ? Also, I was hearing about some restrictions applicable to traffic entering / leaving AP.

As far as my knowledge goes, the tiruvallur-tiruttani route was very bad on account of the ongoing widening work, and so was planning to go via tada.

                            Any advise would be welcome.

                            Thanks
                            Srinivas

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end.

                                Route: Bangalore-Salem-Dindugal-Munnar-Mankulam-Munnar-Top Station-Vattavada-Kottakamboor-Munnar-Udumalaipet-Sultanpet-Annur-Metupalayam-Kotagiri-Ooty-Masinagudi-Mysore-Bangalore.

Bangalore-Salem-Dindigul : Road widening underway at few places till Shoolagiri, post that it’s good throughout till Dindigul.

                                Dindigul-Vathalagund-Theni: Good two lane roads.

Theni-Bodi-TN Border/B.L.Dam: Horrible roads Till somewhere close to Chinnakkal. Big boulders left to rest of the roads as per the contractor’s/Government’s wish.

KL Border-Devikulam-Munnar : Once you cross KL Border, the roads are superfine all the way till Munnar.

Munnar-Mankulam-Munnar: bad roads for the first 2 kms, post that its good narrow roads.

Munnar-Topstation-Vattavada-Kottakamboor: Munnar-Top station roads has lost its charm, it’s now poorly maintained post rains. Top station to Vattavada village are good winding roads, post that its more of a trail than a road till it ends at Kottakamboor. Post that its only kaccha rasta to kurunjimala. Villagers advice you not to take that route to sheer number of wild animals and very very bad roads. Only local jeeps take this roads to fetch logs for paper making industry.

Munnar-Maryoor-Chinar WLS-Udumalaipet: Average two lane roads throughout on average. Roads are broken at many places on Munnar-Marayoor stretch.

Udumalaipet -Pettapampatti-Sultanpet-Annur-Metupalyam: Very good two lane roads. Negligibly shorter route than going through Coimbatore, but definitely an hour or so faster. Not many food joints on this road, except for a decent enough hotel called “Suvaiyagam” near Sultanpet.

Metupalayam-Kotagiri-Ooty : needless to say very good roads.

Ooty-Masinagudi-Theppakadu: very narrow roads, so narrow that 2 hatchback cant stay on tarmac while passing each other.

Theppakadu-Mysore-Bangalore: Good roads overall, but one has to look out for surprise road humps on Mysore-Bangalore stretch.
