Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
Personally would have chosen Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur-nilambur-Pandikkad-Pattambi-Guruvayoor. Overall good roads, except for a small stretch in the ghats before vazhikadavu. Best part is you wont be bored unlike the Salem route. Bangalore-Guruvayoor on whichever route you say is a bit tough to be covered in 7-8 hours.Originally posted by susheelkumar View Post

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
I have gone via Nilambur route in car couple of times. Yes its good route scenic-wise but my priority is to reach there on time rather than enjoying route. Say like start early morning around 4am. At Salem have breakfast & lunch after reaching home around 2pm.Originally posted by phanikar View PostPersonally would have chosen Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur-nilambur-Pandikkad-Pattambi-Guruvayoor. When I checked google maps and set the route the Mysore route distance is 400km and takes 8 hours with 55kmph and salem route 500km in 8 hours with some 63kmph.
As you said the vaizhikadavu section especially teh ghat section will kill the time and will be worse if any pile of buses are ahead of you. Overtaking in those narrow roads are quite tough. Well the Salem route I felt the roads are cool and easily you can maintain some 70-80kmph on average. Thats why I thought Salem route if taken I will reach house faster than Mysore route even though another 100km extra I need to ride.
This is the first time Im trying in bike. So no practical experience. As per theory it looks promising. So can you shed some personal practical knowledge on this.Last edited by susheelkumar; 02-13-2014, 03:51 PM. Bangalore to guruvayoor in 5 Hours :surprise: Google has gone mad i guessOriginally posted by susheelkumar View PostI have gone via Nilambur route in car couple of times. Its definitely not that short time buddy. Bangalore-Coimbatore itself upon consistent riding can be done in 5.5-6 hours on the Salem route. Coimbatore-guruvayoor another 3.5-4 max may be. So you can have a safe limit of 9.5-10 hours. Deviate from Avinashi towards karumathampatti. Entering and Exiting Coimbatore will Kill time.

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
Bangalore-Mysore-Gundlupet-Masinagudi-Ooty-Emerald-Avalanche-Manjoor-Kothagiri-Kodanad –Metupalayam-Sirumugai-Metupalayam-Chamarajnagar-Kanakapura-Bangalore.
Bangalore-Ooty: Same old stuff. Good roads overall.
Ooty-Avalanche-Kundah-Manjoor: Good to very good roads. From emerald to Manjoor is just mind blowing if somebody likes to ride/Drive on the ghats.
Ooty-Kotagiri-Kodanad-Metupalayam: Very Good roads overall.
Mettupalayam-Sirumugai-Sathy-Hasanur: Very good roads again.
Hasanur-Chamarjnagar-Kanakapura :Average roads with minimal road sense, and lack of basic amenities like restraunts and fuel stations(comparatively with other NH)
Kanakapura-Bangalore: Average roads, with no traffic sense. One can find more animals on this road, than any zoo.

On this route , going to upper bhavani, either from avalanche side or from kundah/manjoor side requires permits which can be obtained from Ooty DFO.Originally posted by Jayakrishna View Postplease update on which areas of these requires a permit

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
Planning to goto Edakkal Caves from Bangalore.
How is the road condition? Till Gundelpet I know its fine. After that I did like to know the situation.
Also how much time it might take roughly to cover for one side.
Is it possible to finish to & fro in one day??---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
I am not sure about the Gundalpet - Gudalur - Wayanad road but if you plan to take Gundalpet - Forest - Sulthan Bathery route, it is in very good condition. Bangalore to Edakkal should take about 5 hours if you were to bride at 80-100 & take occasional breaks. One day up & down trip is possible but will be a tiring ride.

Most probably I will have to drop the plan. This coming weekend none of my friends are free, while next weekend onwards Im busy.
I wanted to try a one day ride. Anyway will see if someone pops in at the last moment.
Dont wanna try solo as it will be kind of boring.---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
Been to kerala and returned back yesterday. Wish to inform you all that the roads from vazikadav till kozhikode are awesome. The roads are rubberized and provides a good traction. I been running on these routes almost daily. And also the buses have learnt some road mannerism it seems. I heard the private buses have been fitted with some speed control mechanism don't know how far this is true. Well awaiting for my next trip to kerala in may

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
Last week did chennai - Mysore -ooty - chennai
CHENNAI TO BANGALORE - Mostly 6 lane work is over though construction is still on at few places .
Also while the road joins with NH7 there is a bridge construction without proper instruction .
People are not used to the new 6 lane its advisable to check mirrors constantly for unwarranted overtakes .
BANGALORE TO MYSORE
Took NICE road toll amount was rs 36 for two wheelers
After exit full four lane with lots of speed breakers en route .
Do keep your speeds in check there are many police vans with speed traps .
MYSORE TO OOTY
Mysore to gundulpet average two lane roads .
After gundulpet to bandipur forest and there on narrow roads .
Went via MASINAGUDI
Roads were in good shape and I enjoyed all 36 hair pin they even had mirror at each bend to look out for the vehicles .
NOTE : Forest route will be closed in the night time .
OOTY TO AVINASHI
Descended through KOTAGIRI roads were superb .
Only around 7 hair pin bends and lot of tea plantations .
There is a bridge construction while entering METUPALAYAM.
And good two lane roads till avinashi .
AVINASHI TO SALEM
Good roads but accident prone construction is on for a few kms they are expanding it to 6 lane .
Check your speeds at intersection (saw many mishaps ).
SALEM TO CHENNAI
took ulunderpet route and awesome four lane till chennai .

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
KA Roads Update -
Feels good to write an update here after so long
Over the last 5 days I did the following route :
Bangalore - Shiradi - Dharmasthala - Charmadi - Chikmagalur - Mulliyanagiri - Chikmagalaur - Kemmangundi - Attigundi - Muthodi - Balehonnur - Magundi - Kudremukh - Sringeri - Koppa - Thirthahalli - Konanduru - Balagodu - Nagara - Kodachadri - Kollur - Kundapur - Maravanthe - Mangalore - Shiradi - Bangalore
I will post updates about specific sections which either need constant updates or may not have been used that frequently by members
Shiradi Ghat : Almost no potholes at all, except for a patch about 8 kms after Sakleshpur. All places have been patched up well.
Perishanthi - Dharmastha - Ujre : Till Dharmasthla there are a few rough sections of road, but manageable by all cars
Charmadi Ghat : Super duper condition all the way
Chikmagalur - Kemmangundi (Via Lingadahalli SH67) : Very scenic and beautiful stretch of road. But the last 5 kms before Kemmangudi is absolutely broken condition, low GC cars may scrape a lot. But after the 5 kms stretch the last 3 kms to the top is again good.
Kemmangundi - Attugundi : From Kemmangundi end it starts of in deep forest, and you are handed over a time stamped receipt at the checkpost. Roads are totally broken till the next checkpost, low GC cars must avoid at all costs. Most patches don't have cellphone reception, even BSNL. About 2 kms before the exit checkpost the roads improve and fantastic all the way till Attigundi.
Attigundi - Muthodi - Balehonnur (Via Kemmangundi - Muthodi Link road) : The turn off for Muthodi is unmarked its an easy to miss turn. The first 5 kms have fresh tarmac, but are very narrow and two way traffic is almost impossible. Post that there is absolutely no road all the way deep into Muthodi forest. Again low GC cars must avoid at all costs. There is limited patches of BSNL connectivity. The entire stretch of no/mud roads is approximately 40 kms. Also there is no forest checkpost from this end, but you will get a forest checkpost when exiting Muthodi and the roads are good from here on till Balehonnur. Few patches of broken roads, but can be managed by all vehicles with care.
Balehonnur - Magundi - Kalasa : Did this patch after almost 3 years and the condition has really deteriorated. Roads exist, but are in broken state for the most part.
Kudremukh - Sringeri : Looks like tarmac has been relaid sometime recently over the last one year, its smooth sailing all the way.
Thirthalli - Konanduru (Via SH01) : Butter smooth roads all the way
Araga - Balagodu - Kusha Baledoni Rd : Road exists, but broken and rough tarmac. On the bike it was bike massage all the way.
Nagara - Kodachadri base : Good roads, but some patches are being re-done and the appear suddenly due to the up & down terrain. Can be negotiated by most cars
Kodachadri Jeep Route : Its the same as always :P, just felt that its a little more rocky this time and hence tough on the bike
Kodachadri Base - Kollur : The road from Kodachadri base till Manjagalale is absolutely broken and can be tackled only by medium GC and upwards cars.Road is closed for construction somewhere after Nittur and the alternative route is not low GC vehicle friendly, better advised to take alternative route. But bikes however can pass through, at one point where the construction work is going on, the bikes need to be lifted across put on the side of the road. Which the construction workers will do for 20 bucks.
Kollur - Kundapur : Roads are fairly good, a little rough patches here and there but mostly manageable.
Phew!!! That was one long update

Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India
I completed a week long ride to Bhubaneshwar from Bangalore yesterday and hence I wanted to share my experiences on the road conditions from the trip.
Route taken -
Bangalore - Kolar - Mulbagal - Chittoor - Gudur (bypassing Srikalahasti) - Nellore - Ongole - Guntur - Vijaywada - Rajahmundry - Vizag - Srikakulam - Brahampur - Bhubaneshwar - Konark - Puri - Bhubaneshwar.
Return journey was 99% on the same route, except that I took Srikalahasti route from Gudur towards Chittoor.
Most of the route has roads laid. Construction is going on near Mulbagal, Chittoor, Vijaywada and Konark.
There are a lot of diversions between Vijaywada and Ongole. Couldn't count but there are at least 30-35 diversions and it was extremely tiring, compounded further by the trip being on a motorcycle and not a 4 wheeler.
Andhra has good roads but very few trees and absolutely no resting houses/sheds by the roadside. Plus, it was very hot. Added to that, there are no 3rd party joints (CCD/KFC etc) by the highway in major cities as well. I just found one SFC (Some Food Court) in Vizag.
Orissa/Odisha has visitor resting sheds but roads are mediocre at places.
But I'm glad to report that there were hardly 5 potholes that I saw (hit none) in this ~3300 km round trip.
I took halts for the night at Rajahmundry and Vijaywada while going and returning respectively. Hotels were descent with good parking for the vehicle.
In Bhubaneshwar, I stayed at Hotel Shrutee near the railway station and its VFM at 550 rupees per night for 2 people (They didn't have single bed rooms). Parking was decent and safe.
But, I admit I was late by a month in doing this trip as it was 42+ degrees already and I became a kebab in my riding gear. 10 AM to 5 PM were like nightmares! All in all, a lovely experience
