      New MMI v7.1 Maps

Just a few minutes back, I successfully updated the maps of my MapMyIndia Lx130 navigator to the new version 7.1. As usual, MapMyIndia did not bother to inform me of the latest version. I used to visit their website every now and then to know about the release of new version. Yesterday, I saw the new version of the maps here. Another thing I noticed was, when I logged in to my account, my registered device details were not there! I tried to re-register my device, but in vain. Immediately, I sent mail to the customer support of MapMyIndia raising these two issues. Today, I promptly received the upgraded map files and licence files in two separate mails. But, they conveniently kept quiet about the vanishing of my registered device details from my account! I downloaded the files, unzipped them and replaced the old ones with the new ones. I also copied and pasted my favourites from the previous version and pasted in the MapMyIndia folder of the new version so that I can have them in the new maps. Otherwise, the favourites folder in the new version will be empty.

Some of the features I noticed in the new version: NH numbers are prominently visible even in the route overview mode. English UK [in addition to English US] has been introduced in the languages option. Of course, more number of cities and PoI have been added.

          My Lx130 Gets V 8.0 Maps

Now, my 3.5 year old MMI Lx130 navigator has got the new version 8.0 maps. Yesterday, I bought 2-year map upgrade plan costing 1,750 comprising 4 map upgrades in 2 calendar years. Earlier, my Lx130 had v6.0, 6.1, 7.0 and 7.1 maps under the same plan. I got the link to download the map files immediately, which I downloaded and copied in my Lx130. Today, I received the licence files from MMI. But, when I loaded them in my navigator, it did not go beyond the opening menu. After a few telephonic calls with the support team of MMI, I downloaded the map files again today from the link given and reloaded them into my Lx130 with the licence files as suggested by the support team. Voila! It works perfectly alright now. It seemed there was some interruption during my yesterday's downloading resulting in a bug that created problem.

Re: GPS devices - Universal Thread

              Hi Guys,

Recently I was travelling in remote areas off NH3 and got misguided, most of the times i had to travel just by guessing for 10's of kms.
i tried to get help via google maps but the cell showed no signals

now i am thinking to get a smart phone having GPS navigator (application) which can directly connect to satellite (irrespective of network) or to get a GPS Device.

am very new to GPS. just saw them in T permit cars. my questions are as follows.

              1. How much we need to pay for the services? are there different kinds of service providers as that of cell phone networks?
              2. are there any application which can be installed on Android phones which does not use network(directly from satellite)
              3. if purchased tomtom or Garmin navigator, do we have to pay monthly/quarterly/yearly for service usage?

              Thanks In Advance.

Hey, you can try this out. If you have a GPS enabled Android mobile, open the Google Maps of the area where you want to go and save it for offline use. This way, even when you don't have any network, the saved Maps would be able to load and the GPS would show your location.
The network data is used to load the maps, but by saving them offline, you would be able to use them anywhere. But the mobile should be GPS enabled.

And if you are frequent at going to such places, get a proper gps device. I don't know much about them.
                Hope this helps.

                Ride safe and have fun.
                Regards

guys, if i save an area map for offline use on my mobile, then will mobile signal or 3G/2G data be required for GPS to be functional??

Nope; GPS is independent of the map. But if you want to know your location exactly on the map, yes, data connection is required (2G/3G)

                        Smartphone Holder

I have started using Navi Maps of MapMyIndia, using my smartphone. None of the handlebar holders I have accommodates my smartphone. So, I bought one smartphone holder from ebay.in costing ₹ 314.50 after encashing PayBack points. The smartphone holder tightly holds my smartphone both horizontally and vertically. However, I shall use it during my next long ride, and then, give my final comments.

The navigator should be covered with transparent plastic cover with ties or rubber bands. But, I prefer to remove the navigator and preserve it in a water-proof bag until the rain stopped.

The device I bought is simple to attach with the handlebar as could be seen from the photographs. First detach the two semi-circular brackets and after placing them at appropriate place on the handlebar, tighten them with the screw provided. You may use one or both the rubber strips inside the bracket - depending upon the thickness of the handlebar - to ensure firm grip. In my case, I have used both.

I have these installed on my bike for nearly one year. It never failed me.
As for navigation, I simply use google map on my Lenovo A600+ which takes me wherever I want to go even sometimes where there is no carrier network available.
