I dont agree to the italics part.. 200ml mineral oil is mixed (that's the thing we are talking about, yaar) with FS oil, that mineral oil aint moving around separately. hence no thinning of mineral oil (mineral molecules technically i guess)

Again I partly agree to this part. viscosity may change. (reason very correctly stated; difference in VII content) but you are thinking about mineral part of the oil.. which is loosing VII's.. what about FS, which is gaining VII's by the same proportion (lost by mineral oil) overall I think viscosity may* stay same

[*Depends on mixed proportions, formulation of oils]

reduced protection compared to 100% FS oil. but still, crankcase has 80% of FS oil.
completely agree to the italics part.
VIIs is a complete different science and it does not happen like 1+1 = 2. As I am not having much knowledge on this science I will not comment on it. But, from what I know (0.001% of A from a science thats A to Z) VIIs do not add up like maths. 1+1 is not equal to 2 it can be 0.1 or 15.. anything.

I can say for one thing with surity, as I have also mentioned in my previous post, that when the concentration of VII is very low.. it will fail to protect the oil from thinning. It will not happen that 0.25% VII will make w30 a w32 oil.. though 2-3% can make a w30 to w40. It all depends on what VII you have and what is the concentration.

Attaching a graph to prove the theory -
If you add PBR (A VII improver) by more than 3% in a 150N mineral oil.. there is a DRASTIC fall in VI of the oil. In the same oil the VI at less than 0.5% is very low. But at the same concentration (0.5%) the VI is similar in 0.5% or 2% of PBR in a 500N oil.

So, the same VII (PBR) is very effective in a 500N oil from 0.5 to 2% but is ineffective in 150N oil both at 0.5% and 4% - though it is very good at 2-3% in the same oil! You dont know what VII company X has used.. you dont know what concentration it is used in(usually MSDS gives just a range).. and you certainly dont know what grade base oil you have..
so, please dont mix oils! You may spoil the engine.

If you want to read the whole article.. search these words in google IJCT 13(4) 398-403 pdf nopr.niscair and read the first pdf file that comes up!! its called enhancement of viscosity index of mineral base oils!

    Happy reading.

    • My friend is thinking of pouring Motul 300V 15W50 In his 10K old Fazer..
How much is the life span of the oil?? Is that good???

      • @ muztariq ji, that's why i said viscousity 'may' change. But It won't change to the point where it can damage engine. Also, there are many people around who have mixed oil and there were no damages. BTW, haven't read the article, will go through it . @ shibadip, motul 300v should last 4-5k kms easily. Simple rule people use to overcome cost of FS oils is to double the change interval, compared with mineral oils. But don't use it for more than 6 months.

        • Guys I have a doubt regarding the engine oil change for my HeroHonda Glamour 125CC.

I want to change my engine Oil to something which can refine my bike a bit further, because I feel once I cross 70KM/Hr the Engine feels a bit lazy to pull further.

My bike have clocked on odo reading 9500KM for now. I haven't noticed this much of stress from engine before hence the query.

Since I always have been servicing bike in 3 months, I was not aware of what engine oil to use ( was too lazy infact, I am planning to change that now).

What Hero Recommends is " Bike :Glamour . Grade : SAE 10W30 SJ Supplier: NIPPON OIL IDEMITSU".

Guys can you please recommend me which one would help me get that better performance out of my bike ?

          • you can try a semi synthetic or a full synthetic oil of the same grade.

It will cost more than your mineral oil , but engine will be a bit more smooth.

Its a 125 cc engine so it may struggle hard beyond 70-80 kms and it has only 4 gears

              Thanks bro,

The cost is justified if it can make my bike a bit more smooth, I can go for full Syntetic oil.

Can you please suggest any Brands( I have been hearing about motul for quite a while in our forums) , I am not sure even about what ratings I should use for the same. ?

Even I have the same bike and You can actually try out the following:

                Semi-Synth:
                1. Shell AX 7 10W-40
                2. Gulf

                Fully-Synth:
                1. Motul 7100 10W-40
                2. Motul 300V 10W-40

Personally Motul is the best buy for FS.

Before you switch over to full synthetic , i suggest you use the bike a bit more . Some people feel that its better to use full synthetic oil after the valves "SET" in . May be its the wear and tear of the engine they are referring to .

yeah , motul is good . Use mineral oil for another 2-3k and then switch over to FS. (Its just my opinion ).

                  • I also don't buy the argument of not mixing same grade oil with different brandsI was using Motul 20w40 mineral oil for few cycles. I had bought one can extra for topping up. Now the crap service guys forcibly change my engine oil to Yamaha Lube 4T 20w40 because of engine warranty issues. Should I not use Motul engine oil (750 ml left) which is of same grade but different Brand for topping up?

                    • Hey guys,

I need your help. My Activa is due for its fourth service and it currently stands at 11000 km. It's an Activa DX (manufacture date March 2011). On its third service (close to 5800 kms), I had changed the engine oil and had used Motul 3000 4T Plus (20W40). Now the problem is, Motul oil is nowhere to be found The dealership from where I had bought it last has closed and I checked the nearby TWO CITIES also, and Motul oil is no where to be found All I could find was...

                      1. Veedol 4T Plus 20W40.
                      2. Gulf Pride 20W40.
                      3. Shell Advance 20W40.
                      4. Castrol Activ 4T (for Activa), 20W40.
                      5. Honda Oil 10W30.

One of above 3 had "synthetic blend" written on it, although I don't remember which brand. So which oil would you guys recommend me to use since I can't find Motul anywhere

I need this info as soon as possible, as I have already given my Activa for service and will be picking it up today in the evening and need to purchase the oil and get it changed by the mechanic while picking up the Activa from the service garage.

Thanx a lot in advance for any info. Desperately waiting for a reply

IMO option two and three are good options.

Hmm. Do you know what kind of oil Gulf and Shell are ? I need to check coz Motul was mineral oil and am not sure whether I should be using any semi-synthetics yet, although I don't know much about oils and when to switch to semi-synthetics (if at all needed) :P

                          • Thanks catchdoon for the suggestions I would checkout the oils , I appreciate it.

Thanks girimajiananth , but by running a bit more in the sense any idea how many more should I clock? My Bikes is almost near the 10K mark.
or Are you suggesting that instead of directly going for Synthetic , go for mineral oils for another 2-3K and then go for Synthetic ??

Where to find a Motul dealer in Bangalore any idea guys?

                            • Need a advice

Hi friends I recently bought a honda cb unicorn I have done 1555 km in it. A good experience here is the way I have changed the oil of the bike.Bought the bike on 31st August 2012.Engine oil used so far is moto 4 gold 20w40 only.Change intervals:1st engine oil changed at 300 km2nd changed at 750 km 3rd changed at 1100 kmIn all the above 3 engine oil change I have used only moto 4 gold 20w40 and the bike is doing good no problem at all the gear change and everything is very good and smooth the bike easily touches 100 speed in no time without any problem tried it just ones after the 3 engine oil change at 1400 km of run in. I am getting a fuel efficiency of 52 right now. The thing is for me to right here is for a reason. I want to try gulf pride 4t plus 20w40 oil so I wanted an advice from you all who so ever have used this oil before. Some queries regarding this gulf oil is.1. Is it a mineral oil or ss as I am confused on it. 2. Is it better than moto 4 gold 3. What would be the drain intervals on this oil I had plans to change the oil of 1100km of my last oil change after completing 2000 km on it.I would be really kind to all the members here to share there wonderfull experience on the above note. Thank youYours Arjun (die hard Xbhp member) .
