Tyere is no hard n fast rule of when to change the engine oil.. Some change it at 2k and some don't care about this..
its always best to change the engine oil at 2000-2500kms for mineral oil and about 3000-3500kms for semi-synthetic oil.. Atleast its what i had followed..
Speed doesn't have much to do with it.. If you ride hard in high revs, then change at the earliest of the range, ie. 2000km for mineral and 3000 for SS.. And if you ride in normal way, then change anywhere in that range..

Ride safe and have fun.

I'm using motul 20w40, I wanna try 10w40 to see if it improves cold starts.

There's a other grade also of Motul.

I'd seen it in shop.
5W40 !
Cost was some 975rs.

It surely should. Thats if your carb, spark plug, tuning, etc are in ship shape. Since I'm using the Veedol10W40, I dont even have to give a bit of throttle to keep idling in cold starts. Its awesome. Never used Motul 10W40 though it should be great too.

Sounds like a Fully Synth oil. I would only consider it if I lived where ice fell...

Cold start depends on a lot of factors.. Changing only the engine oil won't help you much in this regard..
Just as pixantz said.. The carb. tuning has to be optinal.. The spark plug.. The the overall engine condition have affect on the cold start.. And the proper engine running..

Change it now rather than worry . Overrunning the oil once or twice , we all have done it in constraints . But it is a bad habit to make . Motorcycle engines love clean & fresh oil .
btw , is AX7 (10w40) the recomended grade for RTR160 ?

The feeling I often get is many riders here are overspending on oil , trying to get the very best for their rides . Then justifying that extra wad of money spend by extending the oil drain interval , often to the unsafe side of things . All I can say is that this is a false economy , likely to cost you even more in the long run .

muztariq, first off, good to see you after a long time mate.

@Jethmalani, I've personally used the 5100 for 4.2k+ KMS and drained it for the 7100. Done with 7100 and now using 300V. Having been used this oil in most of my longhaul trips and it's performed remarkably well. I've constantly ridden at speeds above 80 Kmph for most of the oil's life, and even upon draining, judging by its color it was gunky of course but very light brownish, and not the soot gunk as you'd see when draining other oils, and it's by far the best budget alternative to any bikes above 200 cc.

But I'd personally suggest you to go for the 7100, best synthetic oil you can get for your bike.

@all, why fuss so much about temp grades and what goes into it. Go through your owners manual, learn the basic infos about oil, get it ticked in your checklist and it's more than enough to make you guys rock the road. Too much *philandering* leads back to the same stuff all over again.

Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

thank you sir i would take thy words and shall drain it at 3-4ks accordingly, but since m not into much revving and m mostly commuter with avg speed of 60, occasionally burst at 80 if some 125/150 cc guy act like driving HBusa, would you still want me to give a shot with 7100, its FS right? :what:

I'm not sure about shifting from xw40 to xxw30 coz the former dampens the sound of the engine very well, the last time I search for oils no one had gulf here in Bangalore, they said that there's no supply anywhere, will check again.

I just changed my plug to ngk g power, Carb tuning is fine too I guess.

then why worry this much.. bikes are not this fragile..
use the grade that honda has recommended.. that would be the best.. and also stick to that grade..

Ideally that should be the last line, the bottom line of this 'Engine Oil' forum. But I guess the guys just won't let it be that simple

I never recommend anyone extending their drain period so much as I did. Use Discretion. As I said, I never recommended anyone, but it was a case in point to the usage of the oil. If you intend to extend, you are more than welcome to.

Go for 7100 with eyes closed.
