  • short review of shell ax7 and gulf 20w40

    bike rtr 160 with 43k
been switched to ax7 after using gulf

engine is little smoother than gulf( after all old rtr's are quiet rough with any thing you through )
but gear shift is not quiet smooth than gulf

but after asking rs 300 for shell , gulf is worth every penny at rs 180 aim getting
and also gulf is lasting a good 3k run with all sort of abuse

AFAIK Motul 5100 is/was available only in 15w50 grade . Never seen it in 10w40 type .

Good News for riders in Calcutta seeking this oil -

Limited stock selling at this shop for Rs 400 (1lit) a bottle . Price elsewhere is Rs 495.00 .

      Oriental Auto Spares - 255, N S C Bose Road , Kolkata 700047 (Phone Guddu'Jee - 9836530716) .

The shopkeeper is also very knowledgeable and he has a great stock of genuine spares and stuff like NGK Iridium / G-Power / cyclo carb-cleaner / ASK brake shoes / Makino clutch plates , all carb rebuild kits , LEDs , FAG/NBC/SKF bearings etc etc goodies at the correct rates . Only such shop I found in south Calcutta .

PS - I am just a customer there , passing on the tip .

15w50 is what u find in their website. 5100 10w40 is also there in the market(as of now can find only old stock). and also 5w40(300v) is also there(which im currently using), which many think as a fourwheeler grade only.
(Yes these are hard to find though)

              • Used motul 5100 15W50 in my gladiator. To my horror the oil level dipped to half the mark in just 1300 kms . So is it normal with the oil?? Can i use the motul 3100 gold 20W50 to top up because i heard that most oils are easily miscible with each other.

                • By half-the-mark , you mean half way between max and min markings on the dipstick , I guess . After filling the oil did you check the level again in a few days to ensure a correct fill ? Did you check this level with bike on mainstand on level ground, and after resting the bike like that for ten-fifteen mins after a ride ? Anyway, assuming you did fill correctly to the max mark on dipstick at first, the difference in volume between the max and midway on the dipstick isn't really that much oil . Nothing to worry about . How does this oil feel on your bike btw ?
Yes , you can(and should) go right ahead and top up with that 20w50 oil you have, no problem .

Yes again. Came back from a few kms ride. Waited for a 15-20mins & checked the level by putting the bike on mainstand.

The oil feels pretty good & smooth. In the morning the engine feels slugish. But once the engine is warmed up, it becomes pretty revvy.

that's normal if the oil is used for first time. Same happened with me. Topup amount should be around 100-150ml.

Yeah will bring the oil soon. Cant just afford another 5100 so soon & that too for just top ups.

Went to the shop yesterday to get a valvoline 4t premium since many said it was damn good. But brought this instead by the recommendation of shop guy & another sales guy. They claim the oil to be imported. Dunno if it really is but according to its official site & a few other biking sources it is. It satisfies the specifications of JASO MA2. Costs around 280. Will try it in next oil change & for now i will continue the existing oil by topping i up.

                        • Have used motul 5100, valvoline 4t premium and yamalube 15w50. Great oils in w50 grade one must say. Yamalube and motul being almost similar (only difference is additives) they gets burned a little (around 100ml) for first timers (only).
                          P.S. I didn't topup'ed these oils

Not sure about the burning part. But the oil does sit quite heavily on ones pocket.

BTW yours is a stunner, right?? You should be using W40 oil. Why did you migrate towards a heavier oil??

Have you tried Shell Advance AX7 SS 10w-40? If not, go for it and it's surely not gonna disappoint you!
Also if you can manage to get a genuine CASTROL dealer, go for Castrol Power 1 SS 15w-40! I am currently using this with improved performance.

that's why I migrated to valvoline 4t premium.
