xxw40 should be used when bike manufacturer recommends w40 grade. A 149 cc R15 runs on w50 ss oil whereas a 250cc CBR runs on w30. Manufacturer's recommendation should be followed in most cases. I would still ask w30 users to switch to 10w40 for better protection in hot Indian summer.
Correction: I had wanted to say AX5 and AX7... not AX3
I was talking of bike below 150cc..(sorry i shud have mentioned air cooled bikes maybe) and i think the CBR250 has both the grades xxw30 and xxw40 as recommended
it mostly comes down to the ambient temperature.. so if the recommended oil is w30, you can safely use xx40 (atleast on bikes below 150cc) and to some extent during winters for bikes (upto 150cc) that are rated xxw50.

Does AX7 has 20w50 oils? If so will be pouring shell only, as it can be done easily in petrol bunks itself. For others I have to hunt for a good mechanic and do it.

        • Guys im trying to source Elf Moto 4 XT Tech 10w50 fully synthetic in Mumbai. Can anyone help me??

          P.S :

It's recommended that Pulsar guys use 20w50 oil.Helps in keeping the engine cool than a thinner 10wXX oil.

          • Motul 7100 10W-40 FS

After a long thought I shifted to FS from SS, with MOTUL's 7100 running through the engine. Will provide reviews as time passes.

Also wanted to know that as per my bike specifications, 0.9L of Engine oil is needed and even after me telling the workshop guy to only fill in 900ml of oil she still went in pouring an additional 100ml oil saying "Poora jaata hai and all". The oil shouldn't be either in excess or in low quantity. Therefore wanna know if that this much excess oil shall hamper the performance etc by any means even if it is little? Or it hardly matters?? ???

100ml is ok buddy, not a problem.Capacity is upto 1.5litre.If you fill 1lt then ur top up intervals would be less.I too fill in 1liter.

It does matter . Fill oil not by the volume written in the manual(though that is fairly accurate) . Fill little less than that , say about 700-800ml and then keep adding little oil and measuring with the dipstick(with bike on main-stand on level ground) , untill the level is in between the max-min marks on it . A day or two after the fill , check the level with dipstick and top-up a bit between the max-min marks again if necessary . That's it .
The excess oil can cause problems by blow-back into the airfilter area etc etc . Buy a plastic funnel & the correct wrench for the drain-nut and skip the mechanic next time . Remember to drain your old oil hot and dispose it in an environment friendly way .

Yes, Overfilling does matter a lot. Cut copy pasting my post on this thread some two three days back http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/help-me/...tml#post880024
Dont overfill the engine.. There is a big possibility of over aeration in the oil.
With every rotation of the crankshaft the excess oil will be churned, causing excessive aeration. This may generate foam and air entrapment.
Air entrapped oil is hard to pump and would eventually lead to overheating of the oil and loss of oil flow and engine damage (may I call it engine seizure in extreme cases).

One should always strive to keep the oil towards the upper limit mark. This will ensure sufficient protection even if you fail to check levels regularly. To top up, one should not wait for the oil to come to the lower level mark and even if its mid way top up should be done to bring it to the max level.

I went to a local car mechanic this saturday to put engine oil in my car. He collected the oil and put in a new filter and charged 250 bucks labor for it!! What a waste of money.. though I cant do anything about it as oil filter in fourwheelers has to be changed by a special tool which would prove costly for a 10K oil change interval.
My bike's mechanic takes 20 Rs to put in new oil and change the filter in my bike. The effort involved is same.. isnt it!?

Exactly was my point and now 100 ml excess has been also fed in - Will this hamper the engine? If so, how adversely? Because next time onwards I'm gonna kick that mechanics ass if he's doing stuff at his own will.

                        • @ Catchdoon, check oil level with dip stick/inspection window.. If oil is at max level then no problemo. If you find it little overfilled by 1-2mm then also don't worry. If its way above.. Then only remove some of the oil.@ muztariq,Rs250 labour for car oil change is too much man.. Find someone else to do the job. I once paid Rs50 for using the tools, changed oil & filter by myself

Replace the words "I have to" with "I choose to" and notice the difference in how you feel.

As a matter of fact, even try NOT to mix different brands of oil (even if both are FS)
