  • Re: Engine Oils

I went to buy 10w30 oil for my dads activa today and I went to like 10 shops and everybody told me nobody stocks that grade coz nobody asks for it, the only oil available in that grade is gulf synthetic which is like 220 bucks, I didn't trust it so didn't buy, I've used gulf 20w40 on my unicorn and its decent, lasts just 1500km. Should I continue using Honda OEM oil?

3100 is best for 3k over and above if you extend it. Mixed or sane doesn't matter. Get it replaced after 2.5 or the earliest.

        Cheers!

From my experience, I can say, Gulf is a good product, go for it!!! Used in my CBZ classic, 2000 KM drain period...

You know coz of me my friend also has been trying oils he has a cbz classic when I was on gulf so was he and when I shifted to Motul he did too, but now I've settled with Motul and according to him gulf is better on his bike so he's using that now, gulf must be well suited for cbz classic. When I used gulf in the summer it hardly lasted 1.5k on my unicorn.

Gulf synthetic blend ( silver bottle , which I think you found ) , or synthetic ( dark blue-black bottle with green label ) are both excellent in 10w30 . Both are good for 2000kms at least . If nothing else is available , you can get Hero genuine oil in 10w30 grade ( look for the one made by tide-water oils ) . It's very good for 1500kms , but it makes up for that by being the cheapest to buy and readily available always . Going up the cost ladder , Motul 5100 is available in 10w30 now . Honda's OE 10w30 oil ( white bottle ) is one of the lesser 10w30 I've ever used , apologies if anyone gets sentimental for me saying this plainly here .
Note that there is a coupon inside the gulf's oil bottles which you pull out and get discount of ₹10-₹25 after filling . Like you I've a preference for motul's oils , if I can get it . Somehow they've always exceeded my expectations in use .

So whats the diff between blue and silver bottle, gulf hasn't mentioned SS or FS anywhere. Bro the Honda OEM oil is also by tide, that's the one I bought last time

The dark blue bottle is synthetic ( at least says so clearly on the label ) , Gulf pride 4T synth , cost is around ₹300 minus the discount coupon inside . Silver bottle is labeled as synthetic blend , cost is around ₹220 less discount coupon . The synth one is actually a great oil , have run 2 bottles of it . Had run a few of the silver bottles earlier last year , was as good .
The honda bottle I got (this was more than a year ago) was made by BPCL ( Bharat peroleum MAK ) . Tide is good .

I'll see if the blue one is available, gulf was out of stock for quite a while now in Bangalore.

Good for P220 riders too But hey, did they say manufacturing would be done in India??? I supposed quality would be hit largely by this...

They are saying this particular packaging i.e. for 1.2litres will be manufactured in India. If that is the case then you can look at it in two ways Motul has been manufacturing oils in India for the Indian Market or only the packaging will be done here but oil is manufactured somewhere outside india which gets imported here.

Now which one is true i dont know and cannot even tell for the quality.

Even if the process is all about repacking, then also there are chances that the quality will take a hit... Adulteration, consistency, changes in quantity, quality control has always been an issue with our local manufacturers/re-packers...

Not really. The oil is tested by the QC guys and after getting heads up from the QC, it is packed. Also, all these big oil companies dont like messing around with the quality. The same oil might go to the OEM as well as to the local market.

                              Cheerz!!

Don't think so, if that would have been the case then we would have not been talking of these things... You see, the visibility of counterfeits in the market is the proof. The same oil has a different manufacturing & packing process out of India... Many top end oil products are being used by different teams in GP, but the same oil doesn't performs as good as it performs on track... And mind it, nothing destroys the oils like "Heat"... So, quality would definitely take a hit... Motul's 5100 is factory filled in Yamaha bike, but it differs from Motul 5100 in retail market... This hints towards the quality thing... Also, the factory filled oil in my P220, was still light yellow when SVC guys drained it at 750 kms. But after that, the replaced oil turns black within several 100 KMs... but does the job upto 3K Kms. This is another hint towards the quality issue...
