Engine oil
Hey guys I have been using Shell 20 W 40, 4T Engine Oil for my bajaj pulsar 150 cc for the past 4 yrs.But occasionally i have put 20 W 50 4T Shell engine oil. But i feel 20W 50 to perform better on my bike..So whats the difference and which one is apt for my Pulsar 150 CC which has done 58000 kms.

Re: Engine Oils
Hi guys, i have a pulsar 200NS, recently i had observed that my oil filter cap was leaking oil, but i had already lost a lot of oil and it was on min level when i observed it.
Got it fixed at the svc today but they topped up with the Bajaj oil. I was using motul 7100 20w50 fully synthetic and the Bajaj oil is mineral. Though i have read mixing the same grade is not a problem but it was in regards with semi synthetic and fully synthetic, not mineral and fully synthetic.
Should i drain the oil and get it filled with fresh oil or can i continue like this. Last change was at 3.6k and currently I'm at 5.6k. Its more of a SOS situation. Please advice.

Re: Engine oil
That's because the correct grade for pulsars is xxW50, you were using a lower grade all this time.Originally posted by puneeth7967 View PostHey guys I have been using Shell 20 W 40, 4T Engine Oil for my bajaj pulsar 150 cc for the past 4 yrs.But occasionally i have put 20 W 50 4T Shell engine oil. Re: Engine Oils
Adding a little mineral oil to Semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil as top up is not a problem, the problem is you are using fully synthetic oil too soon on your bike, according to me FS oils should be used after a bike has completed 8-10k km.Originally posted by pratik.pat View PostHi guys, i have a pulsar 200NS, recently i had observed that my oil filter cap was leaking oil, but i had already lost a lot of oil and it was on min level when i observed it.

I do agree that it was too soon, 1k more of this oil and I'll revert to mineral or ss. Though it has been discussed here before also but what are the potential repercussions of using fs. BTW thanks a lot again.

Re: Engine Oils
There is no need to revert, if your bike likes this oil, keep using it at every oil change.Originally posted by pratik.pat View PostThanks a lot @sinnerz2000 .

You can use FS oil from the first oil change itself.

Re: Engine Oils
A new engine needs to wear a bit to get settled so if you use a FS oil that engine wear is reduced a lot, so its better to use plain old mineral from start for awhile.Originally posted by pratik.pat View PostThanks a lot sinnerz2000 .

BTW thanks a lot again. Don't shift to mineral right away, shift to SS for a few thousand km and then go back to FS.

Re: Engine Oils
Thanks muztariq , the engine loves it , revs are free and the vibration has reduced quite a bit, considering i own a ns, it's an added advantage, fe hasn't had a hit , so yes I'll like to continue.Originally posted by muztariq View PostThere is no need to revert, if your bike likes this oil, keep using it at every oil change.

Thanks sinnerz2000 for the info, but i guess reverting now won't be useful, though I'll keep it in mind from now onwards. I had strictly followed the run in so i guess i minimized the possible damage.Originally posted by sinnerz2000 View PostA new engine needs to wear a bit to get settled so if you use a FS oil that engine wear is reduced a lot, so its better to use plain old mineral from start for awhile.

Re: Engine Oils
Completely agree with you regarding run in. But how long is the question. I think 1000 km is sufficient for a motorcycle engine to run in.Originally posted by sinnerz2000 View PostA new engine needs to wear a bit to get settled so if you use a FS oil that engine wear is reduced a lot, so its better to use plain old mineral from start for awhile.

Synthetic motorcycle oil does not interfere in run in as they dont have friction modifiers.

Re: Engine Oils
Pulsar series, after owning, riding and several of the same class, w50 is almost unanimously loved by the Pulsar series. Reason being two, for some reason the bike gets hot on humid conditions real quickly and I've seen sluggish performance after repeated rev riding the engine, not redlining. W50 fares a tad better to W40 as it is slightly better in gearbox performance and high speed engine note. The problems I've faced with W40 is tool box like gearbox clatter and very inferior performance, of course it is experience with my usage.Originally posted by puneeth7967 View PostHey guys I have been using Shell 20 W 40, 4T Engine Oil for my bajaj pulsar 150 cc for the past 4 yrs.But occasionally i have put 20 W 50 4T Shell engine oil. Sorry if it's inappropriate, but let me add just a little snippet here considering the good help you've got from fellow members. Mixing FS with mineral is not really an issue until the oil mixed is in negligible quanity 90:10 not 50:50. The reason lies not just considering the oil, but at a molecular how these man made versus natural oxidants work in an engine.Originally posted by pratik.pat View PostHi guys, i have a pulsar 200NS, recently i had observed that my oil filter cap was leaking oil, but i had already lost a lot of oil and it was on min level when i observed it.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'
And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.
THE END

Re: Engine Oils
The rule I followed is slow speed run in that is upto 1k km and varying speed run in upto 10k km using only mineral oil. That's how I feel will set the engine well, but that's my personal rule it varies from person to person.Originally posted by muztariq View PostCompletely agree with you regarding run in. Re: Engine Oils
Guys i have a query.
I always use Shell advance ax5 20w40 on my discover 135 as i find it best suited for my bike. I have to ride 280km tomorrow to my workplace. Since all the shops were closed i couldn't get shell oil today so used MAK 20w40 to top up the engine oil level. This won't be a problem right?
