Re: Engine Oils
If the SVC has been using Bajaj DTSi oil, the Engine Oil grade has to be 20W50 only. IMO, get it conformed from somebody who has the manual of Discover or you can search on the Bajaj website.Originally posted by Nanda SS View Post

Re: Engine Oils
You can safely use 20w50 oil till you find the correct grade. It doesn't matter much but do give time for the engine to warm up to be on the safer side.Originally posted by Nanda SS View PostI search on the bajaj website, i found only Discover 125ST and it recommends Bajaj DTS-i 10,000-SAE 20W50...

Re: Engine Oils
I use the Mobil1 10W40 Racing 4T oil in my TVS Apache RTR 180 ...It. is a very good mobil and lasts long as 8000kms. It keeps the engine cool and cleaner...The main part is that it helps a lot in cold starting. This mobil cools down very quickly and does not strain the engine. But the price is on the higher side... around 850 bucks in kolkata.. from the dealer i take. Don,t know about other dealers. I recomend this mobil for bikes having lower grades. But not recommended for pulsars and bullets.. I can personally vouch for that. For pulsies and bullets the 20W50 grade is recommended...
Happy Rolling....

Can you please provide me your top-up interval because the synthetic oil evaporates in due course of time.
I'm using Karizma 2011, modified to my test and requirement. Using Motul 5100 15W50 with great satisfaction. I use my bike for touring only and I clock 600 - 700 at a stretch (with 2 or 3 small breaks though). So, for that sort of riding I preferred XXW50 oil for comprehensive engine protection. I use the oil for 3k max. My odo is 30K km approx(approximately, because I have thrown away the whole meter assembly
)
Looking for a better one.
So, depending on the usage what would be the right grade to follow?
1) Company recommended 10w30 OR 2) Internationally recommended 10w40 - for CRF 230 engines OR 3) For Indian climate 15W/20W 50...
Oil gurues please enlighten me to provide the best for my pal.

If you are using Fully Synthetic oil then there is no point of changing the oil after a short span say 3k kms. Atleast use it for 6-7k kms. The company claims that it can be used upto 10k kms.
In case of top up check the oil level around 1k kms and if required top it up. It is also advised from the company that you should change the oil filter(if present in your bike like removable ones in the apaches) every 3k kms and top the oil if neccessary.
In case of grades, you can go higher value like 10W40 or 10W50 but try not to change the "X" rating. I am specifically mentioning that if your manufacturer has asked to use 10W30 then you can use 10W40 or you can also lower the value of "X" like 5W40 or 0W40 but do not use 15W40 or 20W40. Try keeping the lower value as low as possible and the higher value as high as possible. But in case of indian bike 10W40 or 10W50 is sufficient enough to do the job.
So in my opinion use 10W40 or 10W50 grade of companys like Mobil1, Motul, Shell, Petronas.
Happy Rolling..

Re: Engine Oils
Hello i filled up my unicorn with SHELL AX7 10w40 semi synth. Abt 200 kms back
previously i was on veedol take off 4t plus lasted about 2000 kms
I was very excited to see improvement but it did not feel much except little smoother revs however i still have COLD START problem i think because of winter and only solution is even thinner 10w30

Get the dual contact spark plug from tvs apache. Its of the same make as the unicorn's stock plug and same size too. It will eliminate your cold start issue completely. No need to go for thinner oil, 10w40 is the proper grade for the unicorn. I myself am running a dual contact plug on my bike and it starts with one kick even in very cold (18-20*C) temperatures.
